Went to college with him, The receivers used to talk about the “Elway cross”, which was the mark the ball would leave on your body because the tip of a football forms a cross from the seams and if you got a ball in the stomach it would leave a mark. Was entertaining to watch him play right field on the baseball team, best throw I’ve ever seen in person was him throwing a guy out at home plate with a throw that was a line drive from close to 300 feet away
He’s stepping and leaning into almost every throw sure he had a strong arm but cmon now most of these look the opposite of effortless it’s like he was trying to hurt his receivers or something lol

Looking back after so many years it's a foregone conclusion that Elway, despite my bias, was dangerous. I don't know how other teams were could muster any confidence in playing against him. I still have my "MACH 7" - John Elway/fighter jet poster from back in the day. Other things that come to mind - 'Damn the 80's were blurry.' & 'So long...took so long to get a running game in Denver, & it was right on time too giving John much needed reprieve in his later games.' That duck & pass for a TD @ 8:51 has gotta be my favorite. The angle they showed it on tv though was from behind. It looked almost surreal; here in this one you can actually see Elway dip low enough to avoid being tackled as the guy flies over him & then he pops right up to make a beautiful connection in the end-zone. Amazing.

He could have a pretty trash game statistically, but in the 4th quarter with the game on the line, he would win you the ballgame. People forget what kind of player he was because they never saw him and they just go by the numbers. He might only throw 17 or 18 touchdown passes in a season, but 4 or 5 of them were game winners. And none of this footage is sped up, his physical talent was such that he could take over the game, especially in the 4th quarter.

My favorite Elway years 85-88 and 93-98. First batch it was the arm and athletic skills. Second batch he still had an arm but he was mastering the west coast offense. Was so happy that he finally was able to play in an offense that matched his skills.
Play action became a great weapon with Terrel Davis in the backfield. That’s really what he was missing in the 80’s and those brutal Super Bowl losses. Would’ve been a lot different with a good RB in the early years.

I wasn't a huge broncos fan, I had many favorite players, most of all was Walter Payton I was a huge bear fan growing up, in New Jersey close to the meadowlands, so I also would watch a lot of Giants games because I did enjoy watching them, and watching them win. I especially enjoyed LT. But when it comes to quarterback, give me a John elway in any era, and he's a winner. And I remember when Terrell Davis got with the team and that's exactly what John needed, he needed a good running back to take off some the pressure, that John had on himself, he would run the ball he would throw the ball he would do everything. But like I said when TD joined the team, and they had a good running back that's when they won those two super bowls. And I was so happy for the broncos, I rooted for them in both super bowls. Because God knows they were in many super bowls and lost. I believe that was the greatest era of football, but maybe I'm biased the '80s were my time and the early '90s. I watch football today, and the game has changed so much every quarterback starts out in The shotgun position, they turned it into a passing game passing friendly game. You don't see the great running backs, like you did in my day. The running backs like, Eric Dickerson, Bo Jackson, and of course my favorite Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, emmitt Smith you just don't see running backs running the ball 25-30 times a game. Like an Earl Campbell, I had the pleasure of growing up in a era when used to see some real great running backs, and some great quarterbacks like John elway. I just don't enjoy the game as much as I did back then, I guess I'm getting old and a new way of playing I don't care much for, I still watch but I miss the days, of the workhorse running backs. Who complimented the quarterbacks, they've changed the game so much, that pretty soon you won't even be able to hit the quarterback. I guess I'm a dinosaur. Broncos fan since 1977 (I still have a Randy Gradishar jersey)!! I grew up in Toronto and wished the Broncos were drafting three spots higher in the 83 draft. I knew Chris Hinton would be a solid guard or tackle and left it at that. I was stunned when the Broncos acquired Elway for a song shortly after. It was many years of happiness and heartache, but it certainty wasn't boring. I don't know if you can spot one play out of an exceptional career to highlight, but I still get goosebumps when I think of the 3rd and 18 during the drive in Cleveland. The guy slings a twenty yard pass after saving a deflected snap. Seriously, how many guys have the ability to rescue his team from a near disaster to a huge win?

No question. Elway would have at least one 5,500 passing yard season in today's game. It goes without saying that Jameis Winston threw for more yards last year than Dan Marino in 1984 (which I still believe is the greatest quarterbacking season in NFL history).
I first started watching football in the early 80s ...Elway and L.Taylor got me hooked...Broncos fan ever since . Elway was golden to watch , most of his recievers where just really good , if he only had a J Rice like Montana did in his early carreer.
Jesus look at the throws he made at 0:59, 1:17, 3:28, 3:31, 4:08, 8:16, 9:57, 10:55, 11:50 and 12:11. This whole highlight tape is nothing but absolute dimes, but the plays I highlighted are straight BBs. He had a absolute ROCKET. I don't believe anyone ever unleashed the ball on a line like Elway. Favre was right up there, but I don't believe Favre's was as pretty or accurate as Elway's. I became a Packer's fan in the early 1990s too, so I know exactly what type of throws Favre could make, but Elway still threw it on a rope better than anyone ever.
I have always been a Niners fan since 81 but I remember cheering for the Broncos as my AFL team because of Elway. The “drive” against the Browns was a classic. Nobody has had the velocity Elway had ever since.
Just Imagine Elway stats with a good supporting cast, for years Elway was a one man band in Denver, he had a good team at the end of his career. His stats dont tell the whole story and dont tell how good Elway was. A Laser arm and a clutch player. Withthe skill set he had he would be even bettee in the modern football era.

Elway had an absolute rifle for an arm. It was a curse at first, he had to learn to have touch on the ball. He was the closest thing to a modern day QB in the 80's and 90's, but the league was built around the run. Marino was an outlier.
Every time I see a QB these days do something great and wonder if they're "the best," I get slapped back into reality when I watch an Elway highlight reel. We'll never see his equal.

Well, everybody remembers Doug Williams unloading 4 TD’s in the 2nd quarter. I think a lot of people forget Timmy Smith rushing for like 215yds to seal the deal, I believe it’s still a record.
I played in a summer soft ball league and Elway was on one of the other teams. We didn't expect him to play very hard, because we knew how costly a silly injury might be. Still, there was a "John Elway rule". He was only allowed to hit one home run per game, because, he probably could have hit a home run every time he went to the plate. The level of difference in athletic ability between him and us mortals was pretty astounding, even though there were some other Broncos and Nuggets in the league. He was a good natured guy.

Those 30-40 yard frozen ropes are just incredible to watch. His arm strength was legendary. The Bronco receivers used to put the jugs machines to 60 and 70 mph to prepare to catch Elways finger breaking passes.
10:55 is one of the most amazing throws I’ve ever seen - off his back foot with a defender driving into him, can’t step into it at all, and throws a 40-yard laser to the sideline.

You should have seen him throw a baseball. I was fortunate enough to have witnessed that. I was very young, but I still remember it. Decades later, I've never seem anyone throw any ball like that. It wasn't just the throw. It's the way he threw it. The wbole visual was unforgettable. I'm sure they're other guys that can do it, but I haven't seen it.
I get that these are ultimate highlights, but what you notice in this compared to much of the modern game is just how absurdly covered a lot of these receivers are. He's throwing into double and triple coverages with incredibly narrow windows because there was so much jamming at the line of scrimmage, etc.

He had almost no help in a very competitive and equal playing field AFC with guys like Marino, Kelly and Moon constantly battling with him until 1996 when they got Sharpe, Davis to run behind that Shanahan offense . He retired with the most QB wins at 300, went to 5 super bowls won 2. Those 3 he lost were just incredible that he got his team there. His late TD pass in the 4th quarter vs the NYG in the 87 Super Bowl still gotta be one of the greatest showcases of arm strength, touch and accuracy I’ve ever seen (4:25) Only 4 qbs off resume AND eye test are 100% better than Elway imo. Mahomes, Manning, Montana and Brady. Marino, Brees, Rodgers and Favre had stats but the latter of those guys minus Marino played in a great offensive scheme when the league was changing heavily. I’d take a guy who I know would have a chance to win every game he was in over a guy that would get you 300 and 3 tds every game. The careers speak for themselves.

No question. Elway would have at least one 5,500 passing yard season in today's game. It goes without saying that Jameis Winston threw for more yards last year than Dan Marino in 1984 (which I still believe is the greatest quarterbacking season in NFL history).
I first started watching football in the early 80s ...Elway and L.Taylor got me hooked...Broncos fan ever since . Elway was golden to watch , most of his recievers where just really good , if he only had a J Rice like Montana did in his early carreer.

Jesus look at the throws he made at 0:59, 1:17, 3:28, 3:31, 4:08, 8:16, 9:57, 10:55, 11:50 and 12:11. This whole highlight tape is nothing but absolute dimes, but the plays I highlighted are straight BBs. He had a absolute ROCKET. I don't believe anyone ever unleashed the ball on a line like Elway. Favre was right up there, but I don't believe Favre's was as pretty or accurate as Elway's. I became a Packer's fan in the early 1990s too, so I know exactly what type of throws Favre could make, but Elway still threw it on a rope better than anyone ever.

I have always been a Niners fan since 81 but I remember cheering for the Broncos as my AFL team because of Elway. The “drive” against the Browns was a classic. Nobody has had the velocity Elway had ever since.
And to think John Elway played his whole career without an ACL in his left knee, even makes his accomplishments even more superhuman.
One of the all time great QBs, an absolute legend with astounding power and precision. Amazing games to watch back then.
Just Imagine Elway stats with a good supporting cast, for years Elway was a one man band in Denver, he had a good team at the end of his career. His stats dont tell the whole story and dont tell how good Elway was. A Laser arm and a clutch player. Withthe skill set he had he would be even bettee in the modern football era.
Could you imagine Elway 6ft3 rocket unlimited range arm with mobility playing in today’s league. Today’s NFL QB top five could thank Elway for doing it first. I know he has the strongest arm of all. He throws 60 yards in the air missiles and completes most of them.

Ask anyone who had the best offensive line in football in the 90s early 2000s and Denver will definitely get a mention…but elway made plays when they didn’t seem possible….my all time favorite QB ….love that he got 2 rings before he retired….
Although I watched him growing up I didn’t realize until just now how lucky us sports fans are now to have all the technology especially all the cameras because watching this you could really tell how much better it showcases these athletes especially a great QB.

Elway had an absolute rifle for an arm. It was a curse at first, he had to learn to have touch on the ball. He was the closest thing to a modern day QB in the 80's and 90's, but the league was built around the run. Marino was an outlier.
Every time I see a QB these days do something great and wonder if they're "the best," I get slapped back into reality when I watch an Elway highlight reel. We'll never see his equal.

Elway's touchdown pass to Vance Johnson in Super Bowl XXI is probably the greatest play in Super Bowl history that nobody remembers. It's a highlight reel play that isn't usually included in the game's highlights.
Well, everybody remembers Doug Williams unloading 4 TD’s in the 2nd quarter. I think a lot of people forget Timmy Smith rushing for like 215yds to seal the deal, I believe it’s still a record.

I remember him being feared as a runner in a pre Vick era. He wasn't easy to tackle. He considered it his opportunity to hit someone, I think.
I played in a summer soft ball league and Elway was on one of the other teams. We didn't expect him to play very hard, because we knew how costly a silly injury might be.
Still, there was a "John Elway rule". He was only allowed to hit one home run per game, because, he probably could have hit a home run every time he went to the plate. The level of difference in athletic ability between him and us mortals was pretty astounding, even though there were some other Broncos and Nuggets in the league.
He was a good natured guy.

Those 30-40 yard frozen ropes are just incredible to watch. His arm strength was legendary. The Bronco receivers used to put the jugs machines to 60 and 70 mph to prepare to catch Elways finger breaking passes.

marino released it quicker w/ amazing accuracy but elway had more rope velocity deep..... to this day, no one has surpassed that nfl duo.
You should have seen him throw a baseball. I was fortunate enough to have witnessed that. I was very young, but I still remember it. Decades later, I've never seem anyone throw any ball like that. It wasn't just the throw. It's the way he threw it. The wbole visual was unforgettable. I'm sure they're other guys that can do it, but I haven't seen it.

I get that these are ultimate highlights, but what you notice in this compared to much of the modern game is just how absurdly covered a lot of these receivers are. He's throwing into double and triple coverages with incredibly narrow windows because there was so much jamming at the line of scrimmage, etc.

Go Hawks! I hated John Elway as a kid, "Bronco Busters". I just wanted him to go away. He'd beat us and there was nothing we could do about it. The Boz sacked him ONCE and a billionaire bought our franchise to keep it from being the Rams and Raiders.
But I watch John Elway's highlights and see Russell Wilson highlights. Elway has a stronger arm, but the pocket mobility is the fricken same. Russ made riskier throws in his earlier career, but now just looks like a carbon copy of Elway.
BTW, I seen Jonh Elway play live. The ball coming out of his hands was like a laser beam. It was Terrell Davis's first year. They killed us that game.

It’s actually heresy people call this guy overrated. Madden called Elway “the closest thing to a one man offense”. He had almost no help in a very competitive and equal playing field AFC with guys like Marino, Kelly and Moon constantly battling with him until 1996 when they got Sharpe, Davis to run behind that Shanahan offense . He retired with the most QB wins at 300, went to 5 super bowls won 2. Those 3 he lost were just incredible that he got his team there. His late TD pass in the 4th quarter vs the NYG in the 87 Super Bowl still gotta be one of the greatest showcases of arm strength, touch and accuracy I’ve ever seen (4:25) Only 4 qbs off resume AND eye test are 100% better than Elway imo. Mahomes, Manning, Montana and Brady. Marino, Brees, Rodgers and Favre had stats but the latter of those guys minus Marino played in a great offensive scheme when the league was changing heavily. I’d take a guy who I know would have a chance to win every game he was in over a guy that would get you 300 and 3 tds every game. The careers speak for themselves.
After a few years when he retired Al Michael interviewed him, asked him how far he could’ve thrown. He said 83 yards, that must be the most a human can throw. Mahomes and Allen both said to throw 83 yards themselves.

Elway I met when I was real little in the 90’s after my Dad took me to see a practice. The players were walking back signing a few autographs. I asked him to sign a football and he said, “I’ll give you two options. I can sign the ball or I can throw it back to you. Then you can say you caught a pass from an NFL QB” so he threw the ball to me, my parents missed the picture..... and I’m out an autograph lol. True story, cool memory but kinda got screwed haha.
