I've been a Bronco fan through and through for more than 40 years. My buddy and I had season tickets throughout John Elways career. The comebacks he was able to lead were so exciting to watch firsthand. He couldn't have won a Super Bowl without that great 1997 team. Before that though, the throws he would make, his scrambling ability, his athletic ability, his leadership. Just an amazing tough football player. So glad I was able to see every game he played with the Broncos. Great memories.

I grew up in Colorado, with Denver being my favorite team of course. I still have a VHS of this, and treasure it. So happy to see it here on UA-cam and relive some of my favourite memories! John Elway was my biggest sporting hero ever, to this day. The year he won his first Super bowl with Denver, I had written a poem in John's honor, during the pre-season, called "To Wear The Ring." The poem ended,
"after everything he's accomplished, if he could do just one more thing, he wants to win the big one, he wants to wear the ring!"
I was living in Hawaii by then, but emailed it to my sister in Colorado. She later told me that when Denver made the Super Bowl, there was a big celebration at the mall, and she read my poem out to the crowd. She said people really liked it.
After Denver had won the Super Bowl, some of the players who had gone to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl were going to appear at Nicks Fish Market, the restaurant owned by Pat Bowlen, then owner of the Broncos. I went with my older brother and the place was packed. We saw Shannon Sharp, Tyrell Davis and a few of the others, but I was there to see my Hero, John Elway. Finally toward the end of the night, he showed up but was surrounded by people so I couldn't get anywhere close. while I had gone to the toilet, my brother saw Pat Bowlen walking his way and he gave him the poem I'd written and asked if he'd give it to John. Not long after that, the players were leaving and fans lined up to take photos and try to get hi-5s as they left. As Elway walked near, my brother called out, "Hey John, this is the guy who wrote the poem." Then John Elway, my biggest living hero, stopped in his tracks about 3 feet from me, looked directly at me, and gave me the "Mile High Salute", which is something many players did that year after scoring a touch down.
That was much more special to me than my wedding or pretty much any other event in my life!

That's beyond Awesome Buck Buchanan! I Thankfully got to meet JOHN ELWAY on May 10th 2017. He looked like Superman and was really classy and respectful to me shaking my hand. I'm out of Weatherford ( now Granbury), Tx and Dreamed about meeting John Elway, my Biggest hero in Life along with DEF LEPPARD Snoskiing in Breckenridge, Colorado in the 1988 and 19i9. To actually have met JOHN ELWAY was A DREAM COME TRUE 🎉

I lived in Denver when John Elway was quarterback for the Broncos. You basically couldn't live in Denver back then and not be a Broncos fan. I'd be exhausted after most games because so many were last minute, come from behind, how can we possibly win this situations. But more often than not, the Broncos would pull off a miracle in the final seconds of the game. My co-workers and I would marvel for days about the incredible plays we'd seen. It was a magical time...

I was a Bronco fan since 1985 because of Elway and their colors. I was a lil kid and my baseball team was the Mets so the Broncos with the Orange n Blue plus Elway I was sold for life..I suffered in school after those 3 super loses in the 80s but never gave up on my BRONCOS or Elway. Then they won back to back and all my friends said we remember bothering you but you never gave up on Denver. I never will. Go Broncos 2023

Elway had weaker offenses than Marino yet went to more Super Bowls and stepped up more when his team needed him the most.

    • @buckbuchanan4902

I always said that if Marino had Elway's offensive line, Marino would have been crippled within 3 years, but if Elway had Marino's offensive line, he would have broken every NFL passing record and held them to the end of time!
Elway was also one of the greatest scramblers in NFL history, and in his rookie year, was the second fastest player on the team!

Beyond the obvious (that this is a treasure), this video was produced at a time that NFL Films music was at its very peak. So many great ones in here. Gotta be honest, it's not just nostalgia...I really think the production was so much more deliberate and better in the 1980s/1990s NFL content than over the past 15-20 years. The writing and narration in this are great.

As great as always was it was Terrell Davis who helped Elway get those two rings. Without a reliable running game the Broncos wilted in the Super Bowl. Getting Neil Smith from the Chiefs also helped because it provided the Broncos with a pass rush and helped the defense not wilt in the Super Bowl which also helped the Broncos and Elway get those two straight Super Bowl wins.

    • @buckbuchanan4902
      @buckbuchanan4902 11 місяців тому +2

Obviously in this sport, no one can win without some other great players around them. Year after year, Elway handed off to mediocre running backs, usually leaving him with 3rd and long, or 4th and long and then he'd pull a rabbit out of his hat and get the first down or touch down! When Terrell Davis came, the long missing peace for the offence was finally in place and it took so much pressure off of Elway. The defence actually had to worry about someone else hurting them, and couldn't put all their attention on Elway! After more than two decades of watching my broncos, I finally got to see them win a Super Bowl! One of the happiest moments of my life!

Dan Reeves deserves to be in the Hall of Fame (even posthumously), however here is a description of Reeves' coaching philosophy in Denver:
Quarters 1-3, 4th quarter until five minutes left: "Let's run the ball and play the mosf boring football possible with a team that would be lucky to go 2-14, because that is what Tom Landry did. And if you disagree with me, I will take away your play-calling ability and/or draft Tommy Maddux in order to help the offense out as little as possible just out of spite."
Less than five minutes left: "Okay, John, go win the game for us"
