Canoe Trip down the River Eden in Cumbria | Exploring Lacys Caves

- Join me and my friend Will as we head down the River Eden, Cumbria in open canoes.
For some reason we thought this was going to be about 3-4 hours from our research. We did stop a few times but it was more like 7 / 7.5 hours, so by the end we were exhausted.
With me thinking it was only 3 hours or so I hammered the GoPro in the first hour or so which meant the batteries had died for what unbeknownst to us was the better part of the river, rapids & scenery wise...absolutely stunning that last section to Armathwaite bridge! We caught the last part where we could on our phones, which was a bit of a shame but it is what it is...we will go back and next time save some battery.
Even though we checked the river levels all week and the day we went, in some parts of the river there was hardly any water, we ran what rapids we felt comfortable running and lined a few that would be easily ran with some more water on.
We stopped for refreshments at the well known Lacy's Caves, a series of 5 chambers in the red sandstone cliff of River Eden, just north of Little Salkeld, and had a nosey around and sent the drone up too.
Amazing area of the country and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere to paddle.
Hope you enjoy the video, please give it a like & subcribe, it helps with the old youtube algorithm to get the channel found.

Thanks Rick! The scenery from the falls just before the caves onward to our get out at armathwaite was out of this world I’m gutted the go pro run out and didn’t capture it all, stunning! Definitely! I need to paddle it again with more water on, would be much better paddling! John
@@foresteroutdoors yeh, give me a shout when yer going n I'll try n join ya 👍👍
@@RickTOutdoorAdventure1969 I’m always up for a paddle! Will see what water levels are like late spring onward, when it’s looking green and lush again. 👍🏻
@foresteroutdoors yeh I'll give you a shout . Where are you based John, cause there's a few to tick off around me. Preston area 👍
@@RickTOutdoorAdventure1969 Ormskirk mate, only a junction or two down road. Haven’t paddled anything over grade 2/3 (I think) so if they’re not gnarly then yeh sound 👍🏻
Great video
Hey thank you, much appreciated
I know it was a while ago now but do you know what the river levels were when you paddled it - would be great to get an idea of what level and at what station would give a great open canoeing experience without raising the difficulty too frequently into the G3 territory.
Haha yes it was a while ago, unfortunately I can’t remember which stations or the exact levels apologies…however it was very low in places and we were bottoming out or scraping, lined a few that I would run easier with more water. Stunning river in places I plan to go back at some point when the levels are higher, lining wasn’t too difficult though in the places with too many rocks about
Listen to your voice, are you from ... around the Wigan ish area 50 miles radius.
Originally St.Helens, currently residing in Ormskirk so just a junction down from Wigan yeh
Great video. Where’s the “get in”? I wouldn’t mind paddling that section
Thank you 😃 Langwathby bridge, there’s a lay-by at the side by the lights.
You are obviously very professional but we saw a group of 4 far less professional canoeists who got in to trouble over those falls and one of them died. It was horrible to see. The down pull below the falls was so strong the young guy didn't have a chance.
I wouldn’t go that far, still learning here.
Can happen to the best of us too even the most experienced. that’s awful to hear! And would of been horrendous to witness, sorry you had to see that.
I assume you are on about the big drop falls we lined? Just before the caves.
@@foresteroutdoorsYes, that's correct, the falls just upstream from the caves. Yes, horrendous to see the person struggling so desperately and to no avail.
@@sianbaxter1320 yeh that’s the ones that were huge and a big drop. I couldn’t see a safe line for my capabilities and not to damage the boat.
