I have multiple scale crawlers and I just bought a cr18p evo pro brushless. The Furitek combo is just awesome and the servo is strong. It even got 2 speed transmission! All that pkg for 200$ I was all in for this new utb18 but too much upgrade is needed to make it good for me. I will keep my money and build another 1/10 lcg. The VRD carbon is next in line on the bench.
On the 2WS UtB18, the 50%, 75%, 100% setting on the remote help with crawl speed on 50%. Then can lunge on 100% but You have to trigger in opposite direction to get any drag brake.
Great review! I agree that the crawling speed is way too fast and $280...there are a lot of good options in that range. Especially if it's a gift for a new driver, I'd probably go with the original 2WS.
thanks for the details about how the rear servo hit the cage. interesting. I just hope more aftermarket comes out for utb that is affordable. already plenty of chassis, but need cheaper parts
I have the original UTB18. I like the original livery colors better. I have been considering changing it over to 4ws for a while now. Just haven't done it. I might have to get to it. 😊
Not to take away from your excellent video, but the video description is where it's at. Rambling ftw! :D I was lucky enough to get my standard UTB18 used for very cheap, and in near new condition. Since then it has been one of my favorite rigs. It is really capable right out the box, and even better with some upgrades. I feel the biggest issue with it, other than the misleading name (it's more like a UTB12), is the price. Where I live, in Norway, they're around 300 bucks for the normal one, and I imagine the four wheel steer one will be at least another 50 bucks. Regardless of how nice and fun it is, and it is really, really nice, it's just too expensive. I can almost build a really decent 10th scale for that kind of money. The good thing is, you can run it without really doing much to it, and still have an awesome time, but who does that? I know I can't leave these things alone... Mine, with a cheap brushless outrunner setup, AM32 ESC, better servo, some brass, overdrive and better wheels and tires (and some bespoke 3D printed inserts) can pretty much do 10th scale lines, which is pretty awesome. :)
Looks good. I’m more of a truck guy. I like my Capra but it doesn’t see a lot of use. If anything, I would buy this for my daughter. She is getting quite good at driving her Yeti Jr. but I’m not sure she is ready for a 1/10 vehicle yet. She likes our SCX24s and would probably like crawling with the UTB18 4WS. Questions: Are there aftermarket gears available (underdrive for example)? Would a low profile servo fix the chassis interference?
@@rcstories_ca dlux makes over and under drive, as well as TReal. Axial has a 6% overdrive no underdrive tho. Team garage hack sells machined transmission gears. I have axial's OD gear in a couple of mine. I'm thinking about getting Dlux's underdrive set to pair with my more compy rig.
Funnily, I'd love both the smaller scale and 4ws but I was so disappointed by the driving characteristics and quality of the 1/10 base camp that I'm put off from the UTB18 even with the new hobbywing 380 2in1 becoming available
I knew they were gonna do this, I even guessed it as a new release in your video about how many new releases we'd have. Now I just gotta figure out if I should just buy one or just buy the electronics to make my fox 2wd one a 4ws instead like I had originally wanted to do, already have the extra steer axle and servo, it was figuring our new electronics had me a bit intimidated because I don't really ever mess with them. Would love to see an actual comparison video of the two utb18 versions and see what is exactly compatible and what might not be.
I like that it’s bigger than a scx24 and 18th scales I just wish they would have called it a 1/14 or 1/12 and I’d like one but it’s a okay value for what you get I feel like the og Utb18 should not have been more than 189.99
I like Axial. This is a neat little truck. I'm just totally over the mini craze. If this was scx6 sized they'd have my money. I'm done buying based on value. I have more fun with large scale rigs and I'm keeping my current rigs and money until they start building new big stuff. 1/7 minimum, 1/5 preferred. Arrma 5th scale, not Raminator 5th scale. Those are cool but are victim to their gimmick. Value isn't of greatest importance but durability is.
fwiw. I have three Capras (all custom builds on the 1/10th cage set) - all very different, but fundamentally all using regular RC4WD and SCX10 II width axles rather than the overly wide 'Wraith' width axles you get on the 1/10 RTRs. That basically gives you the same track width as this 1/18 version, but with the robustness of the full size chassis and components/motor etc.
Lol, that's not a mini Capra, that's a giant AX24 down to the ESC not having low speed control. Exact same stupid controls with no rear only option too. That being said, I love that size and will likely get one at some point with the plan to brushless swap it and give it a better transmitter.
so they released a new version of the crawler nobody was buying (so much so it was probably by far the most heavily discounted crawler even over here in europe where usually we get 20-25% discounts when you guys get 40-50%... except for the utb18), because nobody knew what to do with it as it was neither here nor there [plus it looked and still does look very toyish with the weird proportions/scale]? wow. smart move Axial!
Actually do the maths compared to the 1/10 capra the utb 18 is actually 1/14 scale so for a 1/14 it's not terrible still could be a little less but wait and see what happens around Christmas price wise
Yes, or even 1/12th - especially when you consider this style of buggy when parked next to a traditional 1/10th 'scale' truck like a Trailfinder/HiLux.
I don’t know if I would ever build off this platform ? I doubt it unless it was to build a 1/10 scale Suzuki 4x4 . Give me time to think about it.? The width of the axles could make it an option? Price wise it is not logical to use it as a platform to build from. But hey when did logic ever stop anyone who sets their mind to something.
These components are bigger than you think - the axles are basically as wide as a regular 1/10th 'scale' truck (the 1/10 Capra had even wider Wraith width axles) - so they would be like fitting an MST axle or RC4WD Yota II axle, albeit these are portals of course.
I always look at the actual body size when they call it a certain scale. Because the old e revo was 1/10 scale which was the body. The chassis was big and wide like a 1/8. Always look at BODY size for the scale ratio. But I really HATE all these small scale crappy indoor 💩
looks like a perfect travel rig, where you want capability, without taking up too much room in the car.
You ramble on well , I always read the description .
Very unenthusiastically at that.
I bought the original UTB 18 and converted it to 4WS, and parts were much more than 30 bucks, so it's definitely a solid value in that regard.
Well I guess you didn’t piss off Axial with the basecamp “review!” Love it! I wanted a UTB18 for awhile, this might make me pull the trigger!
This arrived before that video came out :) So we'll see!

Me here, still waiting for a new U4 platform like the Yeti or Bomber…
Right!? My Yeti Jr is a blast. I've been wanting to get a Bomber, a new/updated version would be great.
I don't blame them. Small stuff is inviting for indoor winter months
This is almost too big for indoor use.
@maxwell5428 maybe in a living room sure.
The 9" wheel base matches the Dlux " La Perra Loco" that just came out. Could be fun !
Order Dlux shafts before you give it to him
I haven't picked up anything smaller than 1/10t scale yet, but I find myself interested in this one. I like the M/T livery.
The small crawls are awesome!! Definitely don't sleep on them!!!
Yep the M/T livery is nice I'll probably get one i have the 1/10 and the old 18 capra, I love the capra line of cars
Today is a hard day. Thank you for providing a desperately needed distraction. Maybe I'll get one for my brother who I am trying to get into RC.
My son loved his utb18 as a starter crawler and now wants a bigger 1/10.
SR515 is a nice receiver! That is a great addition!
Love this! Giving me losi mrc vibes and I loved that back in the day 👍
I can't believe I read the whole thing.
😂❤
I like that Axial keeps developing the UTB18
I'm more of a 1:10 guy but this has me thinking about it as my first try at rear steer buggy! Still not real sure bout it yet.

Put a Fusion Mini16 in it and it's a LOT more fun. That and a few brass parts and it'll crawl many 1/10 scale lines. I really dig my UTB18!

I'm honestly surprised it took them this long to do a 4WS. I might need to finally pick one up.
Liked just for the description!
your going to need to get the Funkle shirt.

people need to rebuild these on a 110 scale hardbody more often like a Toyota. The big one tent portal look silly. These look more scale

I made my Fox Utb18 4ws long time ago put a bunch of money into it and it still wasn’t fun, parted out and she gone.

Comparing the wheelbase to real buggies its closer to 1/12.
I myself keep waiting on the 1/6 version, which will never happen.
Now I'm pissed lol just got a UTb 18 and this is how I would of wanted it. Bs
Nice release, but the lousy low-end crawl on that thing is dirty. Isn't Axial a crawler focused company?
I feel like if they got it any cheaper wouldn't the Plastics and stuff just be garbage or are they already garbage
@@Gibsonlife573 the OG cages can take a good tumble and keep going.
so this is a 1/15th scale version lol

Read the whole thing it would be worth is for 100 less... 280 for 1/18 ish or 320 for 1/10 base camp? Why?

How many times is axial gonna get away with putting out the same product over and over again? 😂
I want Axial to release kits again. There are so few kits available now. Is everyone to lazy to build kits, or what is going on.
The short answer is yes. That’s exactly it.
Don’t tell me to stop reading, I do what I want! 😄

Their little updates are pretty nice though
The utb18 has only been out in fws so a 4ws version is new
I think it looks completely useless, toss it in the garbage with the Ax24
Yeah, that mickey thompson livery is titties 🤘y'all have a badass day🤘🍻🤘

New my ass 😂
BORING 😂. You set the bar with the Basecamp overview. I expect more from you going forward j/k

Who cares about scale anymore.... everyone goes bigger.... bigger is better, right?
