In the German civil defence we used a plastic 40 litre container and filled it up to 3/4 with petrol. Then we wound several metres of primacord (12.5 gramms of PETN per metre) around the top of the container, primed it with a blasting cap and fired it from a safe distance. It gave a satisfying fireball. Another option was to put three sticks of a gelatinous dynamite (about 300 gramms of explosive) with a detonator into the middle of a 50 kg bag of flour. We did these pyrotechnics (and some others, like large baking pand covered with home made NAPALM, topped with cordite sticks we got from the EOD guys of the Berlin state police) during training exercises to give them more realism and to give the firefighters something to put out.
when I was a kid and the rules were different our favourite was either a cylindrical fuel cylinder or a camping gas bottle wrapped circular in det cord for the lower 3/4 quarters of the container. perfect mushroom cloud and column every time. Love your channel and learned a lot
Yes for sure #42, very easy to create a fuel cloud and no fire. It is worth noting that with the first shot, the Two left pots were a variation to the tried and true set up one the right hand end.
Looks good! Everyone always uses too much bang. I've found that just a few feet of cord is all that's needed for 4l of fuel. I like to use milk jugs spaced apart with a spiral of spicy rope under each. At the ends, I attach a bag or bottle with some Aluminum or Ti powder and a couple ounces of NC or BP. No failures with the added igniter
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Once it burns, it's Aluminum Oxide, aka sandpaper. I believe it's used a lot in normal fireworks. Ti is more inert I think
Good thing it is winter done there, I did not know you need a little more heat. :) Thank you and have a wonderful week. This one started with a bang and a flash. :)
Have you tried pouring Butane down a hill to ignition source? Best done at night of course. When the air is real still. Great fun! Great show Demo Dave as always. But get your self a candle or road flair and can of butane for a camp stove and a small bucket and a calm night. Spray the gas into the bucket then pure down a hill to the ignition source. Guess you don't need instructions. But just for those who don't know.
Never tried that one Dave, do you remember many years ago in Mexico or somewhere a tonne of butane found its way into a large underground drain system and went bang, killing scores of people?
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast no I don't. What a fun gas to play with though. It is so predictable it is funny. Here in California we have clandestine Hashish labs that use Butane to separate THC from Cannabis. It is nothing out of the ordinary for all the walls to be blown off a house or a barn roof to flop open up like the head of a Jim Henson Muppet. Some times it can be lethal but that is most likely the fire after the boom. Good on ya mate. Great show
That would have made a lot of cups of coffee. The barrel bombs we made with diesel were so hot. You could feel them a half mile away. We used military Dynamite. 3 sticks buried under a drum. Put about 30 gallons in them. It was about 45°. But ours spread metal and toxins around. Couldn't do that for a fireworks show.
Great Balls of Fire Dave. Reminds me when the Build Team of MythBusters (Tory, Kari & Grant) did explosions, using a powder that I can't remember the name of, which is used by movie film special effects teams to give that huge red fireball. Always remember the explosion they did at the Alameda County Sheriff's Department Bomb Range with something like a 50 gallon drum of the magic powder, which got them retreating in great haste, back towards their bunker.
Hello Dave. I put a little bag full of black powder on top of main explosive for better ignation fuel bombs. Test it, it will be work good. Spectaculär work. Use a long dynacord for connecting all fuel bombs for ignation, that is a nice flash⚡ on ground. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪💣💥🔥
Thanks for watching Andi, yes more work is required to perfect this work, we will be doing some testing in large diameter mortar tubes soon using both HE and BP lift charges. Please post some video on your channel.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast this videos are on my old PC and this machine is broken. Can not repair it and lost all from this old stuff. For good fireballs take a plastic bucket and build a core with 300 Gramm flash powder in a paper tube put it in center. Take a bigger paper tube around this core an fill it up with black Powder. Then fill up the bucket with flour for a big dust explosion. That works fine and very loud and the smoke looks like liitle nuke bomb. Test it and report. That makes Paul happy. 👍💣💥
Ever try making a thermobaric device? Similar in some respects to pyrotechnics, a lifting charge to disperse the fuel, then another charge on a delay to ignite it once it reaches the optimal stoichiometric ratio.
Never deliberately set out to do this, I understand that it is difficult to perfect and I really would not like to do so with this amount of fuel as I fear the bang would seriously knock us around. Petrol/diesel mix is not very good for this type of device either.
You got that right, It is worth noting that with the first shot, the Two left pots were a variation to the one the right hand end which was tried and true set up.
Wondering if the fuel being ignited has any jelly like qualities? Or are we talking about desiel or gasoline? Lovely fireball formations espescially when the smoke turns to fire when the hydrocarbon ignites as secondary; facinating! And fantastic sound qualities here in Minnesota, thanks again Dave and Paul.
OK... I can see that the Fullers Earth would soak up the diesel pretty well. what is it's function? Is it useful because having a higher SG you can throw it higher??
I don't know how I missed this Episode of "Dave Blows Something Up" but I am glad I found it. What's better than blowing up stuff with High Explosives..... how about adding Flammable Liquids to the Mix. Most High Explosives turn from Solid to Hot Gas so fast that the Human Eye can't see it. Only with High Speed Cameras can one marvel just how fast a couple of Nanoseconds really are. Layout 1 kilometer of Det Cord and see if you can tell which end was the start of Deflagration. It's over in a blink of an eye. Adding just the 'right amount' of flammable liquid like Diesel and a gorgeous fuel rich smokey orange fireball is the result. And it happens slow enough for mere Humans to see and process what just happened. Too much Explosives and it blows the fire out. They use High Explosives to 'snuff out' Fires on Oil and Gas Wells, not make pretty fireballs. There is an old John Wayne film "Hellfighters" 1968 about Red Adair. Out of Fireworks and other Pyrotechnics, stick of Dynamite, 5 gallons of Diesel, and a Safety Flare will leave your guests gasping in amazement.
