    Nice one Mike - that's a good way to save some polys and time. I've often created stairs from separate parts.
    A shortcut for that "Edge Ring and Split" command is as follows...
    1. Select the edge you want to split across.
    2. hold down control, then right click the edge
    3.Select "Edge Ring Utilities" from the popup menu
    4.Select "To Edge Eing and Split".
    Those menus are one of my fav things about the Maya interface because they cause you to be able to access almost anything from the current mouse position. You can even access your own custom scripts from them.
    Also, to find the "Split Edge" node quicker/easier, use the channel box instead of the attribute editor.
    You can modify values in the channel box through using a virtual slider. Let me know if you don't know how to do it and I'll reply with some directions.
    I usually use the channel box because it's smaller and hence leaves more room on my screen for other things.

    There was a vid that was made recently that's just like this one, a lot of people have similar modeling struggles I really needed this for another work around.

    By the way, there is a useful tool in a Bonus Tools - Modeling > Select Every N-th Edge in Loop/Ring. Just select 1st edge, 3rd, then use this comand.

    Why use the split ring tool rather than just setting the edge loop tool to insert in 28? Great tutorial by the way.

      Like a little idiom I read a while ago somewhere: In Maya, there are a million ways to do one thing, and half of them are wrong.
      Or something like that. I can't find the quote anymore :x

    Hey Mike, this question isn't really relevant to this tutorial. I am sorry. Q: I have made a model and uv textures (uv map in photoshop). When i export the model to FBX or Obj. it doesn't take the uv textures. Do you know why this is? Do you have a tutorial about exporting with textures? Thanks!

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 років тому

      Exporting as FBX should hold the textures but it depends where you are exportin it to

    not really into 3D modeling but whats the point of a render service like rebusfarm? Cant you render stuff on your PC?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  7 років тому

      A simple 3 min animation at 24 fps requires rendering 180 x 24 images some 4320 images that might take 2 min per image. So 8640 minutes to render. Rebusfarm will do it 4000 times faster

      Mike Hermes damn didnt know it took this long.

    Awesome video, I was able to achieve this however I couldn't do 28. Instead the highest I could get was 25. Unsure why but pretty much did the same job. Thanks
