This was always my favourite episode as it was the most imaginative story. Back in the 90’s before VR was even a thing I always thought this would be awesome if it were ever possible, and here we are today. Crazy.
Bit of random trivia... Danny John Jules was in the WHAM video for Edge of Heaven. He's the guy they get up from the crowd to dance. Also, the Better than Life book is a great read.
Just a small thing to point out on this episode, Notice how Rimmer is alive when they start playing the game but by the end his hologram status is back, its all psychological with Rimmer in this episode, he starts off in the game with positive thoughts but after the Cat ruined one of his fantasies every thought from Rimmer was negative in a way...this is my fav episode from series 2
@@yegmeshjwp spoilers they don't want to leave because they've forgotten they're in a simulation. Kryten is trying his best to keep them alive as they gallavant about in the real world....
Used to work for BBC north, that plastic pig , it was used from a picture my uncles house in the 70s , even the joshing he always had those 3 wheelers , they were not that bad, dryer than a motorbike in winter.
The weird thing is the crew of the red dwarf come across like real like friends who are ass holes to each other but when the chips are really down they’re there for each other, it’s not clear this early in the run but it’s just great writing.
This was the first episode of Red Dwarf I saw, and I busted a gut so bad that I freakin' woke up my parents and got in trouble.. just the fuckin' ending with the menacing little Monopoly dude popping out of the locker with that mallet. "Come on, it's BONE-crunchin' time, me old China! *NOW, WHERE'S THOSE LIT'L THUMBIES~??"* SPLAT!
You've reached a peak on it now, for me. The next episode is my favourite, and the two after are great as well. (Though many will say it only really kicks in with S3).
I'm so excited to watch you watch them age. The difference both physically and emotionally. Going from young studs who, in the last episode, was on the pull, to middle age and reflecting on their lives/deaths... Still on the pull though, hands off the logo, buddy.
so i have a ritual where every december i read the red dwarf book better then life. Literally love the themes and the content of that book. one of my all time faves. my copy is literally falling apart from being used so much
The waiter in this is played by comedian Tony Hawks. His website is funny as he gets a lot of mistaken letters for skateboarder Tony Hawk. His replies to them are hysterical.
I remember the Killer android in the episode who was going to take over from Kryten was played by Craig Ferguson, who then went to America and was the host of the Late Late Show, before retiring and then James Corden took over as host.
Hay dude listen we’re all here for ur reactions and the realisation that we’re just funny. But 95% off us British followers watch for a only fools and horses reaction. And all off us is so waiting for more. Then u will get to when the script was that good thay extended the show from 30 to 45 !!!!!!!!
"Me Gay Tom " what on earth gave you that idea "? great series .Loved the one where Linda worked in the factory with that look a like lol ,"you`re mad you are Linda "
After season 6, Rob grant and Doug naylor had a falling out, and they kind of need each other to balance out their different styles. Doug Naylor did 7 & 8 alone. From their separate books, I liked Rob Grant’s better as well. I think they did the later ones together again though.
At the time I wasn't that keen on series 7 and 8. But years later with hindsight I appreciated them. I still prefer series 5 and 6 but I think my aversion to series 7 and 8 at the time was that I didn't adapt well to the changes.
I think the biggest problem with series 7 for me was that it went away from the live studio audience and they did a lot more on-location filming. Normally I can't stand hearing 'canned laughter' during a tv show, but it always worked for Red Dwarf because they essentially filmed it as if they were doing a play, so the laughter always felt genuine. When it went away in series 7 it felt kinda weird and soulless, and it was hard to adjust to. However, over time I have come to appreciate some of those episodes. It's still a long way from being a great series, but there are some good episodes in there!

The novelisation really pushes this episode's concept to the extreme! It's quite tragic actually...

One of Cat's best episodes. One of the best of the series as well.

This and Del's are both Reliants but Del's is a sixties Regal van and this one's a later, 70's Robin.
Ooh! Next episode is 'Thanks For the Memory', the first episode I ever saw and still one of my favourites.
Better Than Life is a classic episode. You got to feel bad and sorry for Rimmer in this episode.
