    I think it’s worth saying. This channel has grown like it has because YOU are awesome. I’ve been watching you since somewhere around 500subs. You’ve always stayed positive, always kept out of the channel comments slump. Congrats on the bow, congrats on the channel. Thanks for what you do, and more importantly who you are.

    SO glad to see you kept at it! In everything that you've learned as you've gone with this channel, I feel like your videos teach so much more than other similar channels. Not just about bowry, but about the real value of knowledge, craftsmanship, and persistence. I make my 7 year old daughter watch your channel with me because your personality just sets such a good example for someone to grow by.

    Congratulations! Don't trim it down, keep it as is! Its a beautiful bow and you worked hard to build it, its tangible proof of your skill. Or sell it, I'm sure someone would love to have it! I got back into bows after a number of years. I want to regularly shoot a 120lb bow. I started out at 45, and am now consistently shooting a 55lb bow working my way up. I'm hoping to be in the 120lb range by next summer.

    There are a few techniques for drawing a heavier bow that help you engage your back muscles more than you normally would. I would recommend looking into videos of traditional archery using heavier war bows.

    Bravo Sir! I was on the dge of my seat with you throughout this. I have an English war bow and it is an absolute nightmare to string. It took me 9 months to be able to draw it the full 28/30". I quickly realised I couldn't hope to do it with a regular sport draw so I use a sky draw technique. So much easier. Yes it makes the guys down the club laugh at my terrible technique but heck, the guys at the club can't get close to drawing my bow.
    Anyway thanks for a great video. I always appreciate your content because I can learn so much from it. Thank you so much.

    Advice from an old woodworker, when using a tablesaw never stand behind the piece of wood you’re cutting. As you push it through the blade if the blade grabs it you want it to throw it past you not into you. Take care

      He and Tod did a great episode on Tod's Workshop about drawing and shooting high poundage bows - and the technique is certainly different.
      From what I saw, it appears you hold the string where your optimal point would be, and push the bow away from you, as opposed to trying to draw the string back to that point.

Now 40years later im getting back into archery and love youre channel, so informative and ive already learned alot just by watching. You do great content, ive got a small video of me practicing with the bow i just got, a 40lb recurve bow, cheap but it does the job, and obviously i will be getting more when im confident enough to 100% know what im doing. Kramer: Some people make 200 lb bows
    Me struggling to make a 30 lb longbow: (smh)

    • @shmuckling
      @shmuckling 3 роки тому +2

      What are you making it from? And in what way are you struggling - is it that you cant get the draw weight heavy enough or that you keep breaking them? 30 lb shouldn't be that hard to make. The easiest "cheat code" when making a bow is to make it wider - that way the tension is distributed across more material. Much like if you made two 15 lb bows and put them next to each other. Also, in that way you can make the bow longer, while keeping the draw weight up. I know this is a wood bow channel, but if you're struggling with making bows, do check out the BackyardBowyer - he makes everything, but is exclusively credited with inventing the PVC bow. While PVC and wood are two very different materials, plus the bow making process is almost nothing alike, his videos are absolutely LOADED with GREAT advice on bow making fundamentals for novice bow makers.

    • @chesshamster3641
      @chesshamster3641 3 роки тому +1

      @@shmuckling I am using Poplar like he did in his "15 Dollar High Performing Bow Build." I have made a pvc bow, and wanted to try and make a wood one.
      Basically, I am almost at full draw length, but am not. I think I should remove more wood.

    • @shmuckling
      @shmuckling 3 роки тому +1

      @@chesshamster3641 Removing more wood sounds like what you need to do, yes. That will lower the draw weight and let you draw to your full draw length. Also, it will be less likely that the bow breaks as you try to draw it.

    @tobiasebastiantempella9792 3 роки тому +4

    I've always wanted to ask you a question: why do you use sandpaper and saw to build bows instead of following the veins with an axe or a plane? Don't they tend to break more easily the wood veins? I'm not an expert at all and just wondering what's the advantage of these tools (also sorry for bad English)

    • @HapyAppleProductions
      @HapyAppleProductions 3 роки тому +1

      I cant speak for him personally but as a woodworker myself I imagine the answer is because a saw and sandpaper offer finer control and remove material in smaller increments, making it harder to make a mistake and I imagine particularly with the physics of a bow those small amounts of material being removed are actually affecting the flexing of the bow quite a lot.

    • @carpNcoffee
      @carpNcoffee 3 роки тому +1

      It depends on the material being used. If you're using a knotty piece of yew or osage, then you would tend to go for a "snake style" bow. If you're backing it with another material ie. Bamboo, sinew etc. Then there's no need to worry about it splitting on the back of the bow 😉

    Keep up the good work! You seem like a down to earth guy with a passion about what you do and it´s a joy to watch your videos. They inspire me to try to build some bows of my own. Not as good of course, but I´m having a blast trying:-D

    i made a 110 lb 68 in longbow from a single piece of box store 1x3x8 hickory was fun to build easy to tiller but an absolute nightmare to string lol . now i need to find a good sorce for ash to make arrows . i ended up having to push dowels into 2219 arrows to get the spine about right . now there just a bit on the stiff side but dont bend when shooting or crack from the paradox effect

    If you slightly lean back and concave your back inwards, you can engage your back muscles and not just your shoulder muscles. Also try drawing from either a vertical or horizontal position, it gives you a mechanical advantage.

    Long bows were strung using the instep of the foot.
    The bowstring fixed end is always the bottom limb and this is placed unders the shoe at the instep of the foot..
    The bow is pulled at the grip and the string is slid up the upper limb while alsov pushing the limb at the upper limb away from you.
    Using horn tips and the knocking points at bothe ends of the bow tips allows a littled deeper knocking point and tends to be a little more slippery for the bowstring to make those last inches up the bow ,, the same method is usedvto de string the bow . And with a little more control ...
    Hope this assists

    As a absalute beginner in arechery and bow making i keep coming back to your videos and watch them many times. your vids are the best no bs , easy to follow and practical step by step guid . thanks so much for the work you do its made my life easier. Question , do you ever use or recomend using hide glue for backing or at all on your builds ? i make hide glue from the scraps of hide backing and its pretty awesome , what are your thoughts ?
