I failed 3 times so far. Made a red oak one last time, but the set it took on was crazy. I clearly rushed it. I was using the fiberglass tape method. Will have to try this next.
I did the same making knives and refurbishing old tools. Axes, mauls, hammers, ratchets, wrenches etc. Nothing wrong with falling down a couple times to learn a new skill. Added to the fact you get fancy toys for cheaps.

Coming from a DIY enthusiast who is basically _dependent_ on archery for sustenance, AND on a shoestring budget, this was _insanely_ informative. You're doing some damn fine work, my dude. Thanks for this.
I can't believe more than 300 people dislike this. Are they anti-weapon or something dumb like that? Or maybe they just have no joy and were never taught the glory of martial arts and hunting by their father. Pity. These are the BEST videos I've seen on DIY bow making, and I plan to make some of these with my sons, and purchase your tillering and real strings and accessories. Thank you, and a BIG thumbs up from me.
No I think they are more anti. Background noise. That obnoxious so called music. I've been building bows for over twelve years. I'm always interested in Seeing what other people do. But couldn't stand the noise. Part of Archery is stealth And Being aware of your surrounding me. If that's the kind of noise you need To hunt or Concentrate on your surroundings, I feel for you.

@Magna Carta welllll... I realised that the wood I bought was softwood (rookie mistake) but I shaped and tillered it anyway for the practise. I went back and got some American oak and sapelee mahogany and started again with the oak. I've almost got it tillered but I need to weave another string at about 64" to get the full brace height. Tell you what though, I'm having so much fun with it!! Hope you're keeping well mate👊🏽👊🏽 from Wakefield.
@Marcus 1 it's all up and working now. I've not tested the draw weight, but I can hit a hay bale from about 20 meters. But I've not had the chance to test it any further.
@Marcus 1 I've got a couple of ideas for the next project. I've managed to get my hands on a decent bit of mahogany so I might have to take a look at bending with steam. I think it would look absolutely awesome with some flex in its limbs. But you're totally right, I want to start my next one as soon as I get a chance.
@Marcus 1 holy 💩 that sounds like one hell of a time consumer. But I totally get that it's going to be something like a work of art once it's finished!! The Oak one I finished is about 66" and it's a good size. But I wouldn't mind dropping it down to about 63/64". I definitely need to do a full measure up when I finish work tomorrow, then start planning out the shape. The sapelee is super strong so I might be able to get away with making it a smaller profile all round and keep the strength 🤞🏽
@Marcus 1 thanks for the help mate!! I'm looking forward to getting into this next one and trying a frlewnnew things with it. Hopefully it turns out well. I will give you a shout when it's up and running though.

Don't. As a coach, sign her up for real proper coaching/classes from a real club. She'll get way more out of it! And make sure you don't get a bow that's too big, or more than 15-18lbs for her!
I’m so glad I came across your page this morning! Your videos have re-ignited a fire from my childhood that I thought was completely gone! I haven’t touched a bow since I was twelve or thirteen and I’ll fifty in a few months. I’m going to my local sporting goods store today and pick up a little budget bow to get my feet wet again. I like your no nosense approach to this subject. its not hard just takes patience to do it well, arrow and spear making is in a lot of ways more difficult. Ive been making bows since 73 my first bow was a black palm bow, I had a great mentor, an employee of my dad, a real sepic warrior. In 79 I learned how to make bamboo japanese bows from my sensei. Couple years back i tried making bows and struggled, i wis i saw your videos because i learnt littery so much from this video alone that i didnt know I was supposed to do Thabk you so much, i am going try making bows again
I got one for you that might be interesting- Basalt. basically volcanic glass fibers. stronger than normal fiberglass but works pretty much the same, inexpensive and comes in a variety of forms from rebar to mats, to just the fiber. I just think a volcanic glass bow would be conceptually awesome.
Bravo! this is a great companion to your previous video for a long bow build from a board. I have attempted a couple of bows and have had issues with proper tillering on both. These additional tips on tillering will be most helpful. for the next try. It occurred to me that when you cut in the arrow rest, if you drilled a hole at the inside corner of the the rest it would accurately locate it and you would have a nicely rounded inside corner on the rest. Thanks again for your "user friendly" videos. They invite folks like me to begin building and have fun doing it.
Never saw the tillering of a bow better explained. That tillering tool is a great idea. I'll use one. The idea never occurred to me. How wide would you say the limbs should be to make a 60 pounder and would it be helpful to lengthen the bow for the heavier poundage?
Your editing is amazing. You should do that for your job, it's so professional and you know how to put videos together with such deftness it blows my mind... I can't even. It's amazing to watch your videos and I couldn't care less about bows, but I can watch your videos all day, dude. Far out.
After watching your video "making a board bow" (or some such), I made a longbow from red oak. It was after a failed attempt with poplar, and it happened to turn out pretty good. 63" knock to knock, approx. 25-30 lb draw weight, sight window, arrow rest, polyester custom made bowstring, Rust-O-Leum rattle can paint job (matte blue/gloss black/gloss clear). All done using hand tools.
Great job man, I'm a guitar builder and love building all kinds of tools as well. I can't believe I never thought to build a bow but after watching this I'm starting tonight as soon as I get home from work. I have a bunch of crazy materials and Ideas, thank you for sharing your knowledge I'll be back for more I'm sure.
Hey Kramer,, man you have stirred up some of my childhood memories of building bows.. It’s a mystical feeling.. Thanks for re igniting my memories and challenging me to build one for my self.. Thanks.. Dreaming big..
That’s the best I have seen someone break down the steps to making a simple bow. Really want to try this myself. Your shooting skills are fine by the way. Those shots will bring home some venison for sure. Keep up the good work sir.
I have been making and shooting really rough bows made from diffrent woods from my backyard and I have had alot fun, but I think now it's finally time to build a proper bow. Wish me luck :)
Hey little brother, how many times did it take you to hit the bucket. Good video, real informative and as always you did a great job. Keep up the good work. Your brother in Christ,WRV
Just excellent. You are a genius in your teaching style. Thank you very much. I have been shooting real bows for 69 years, so I really appreciate your expertise and information.
i made a long bow too! it looks really cool. but one side of the bow has a bigger sort of bend is there any way i can fix that? Kramer? by the way i love the amount of effort you put in your videos! ur so good at making videos keep on making more!
I'm just making one hell of a bow with oak and fiberglass, boy... the tilering part is not as fast as he shows here, it's been 1 week and still scraping wood... I may be doing something wrong though, cause the string does not pull as easy as he does during the tilering part. (Sorry for my english)
Hi Kramer, I have a bow very simular to the one you've made, slightly higher powndage but it was my third bow I built, still use it and as you said, it feels very comfortable to me. I have other bows, even expensive ones, but I still love taking my old one I made out for a shoot. It gives you a good sense of satisfaction in the fact your hitting the target with a home made bow costing a few pound, were others are struggling with a bow costing hundreds of pounds. Love the videos, stay safe from UK.
Gathering a few hand tools & bought a oak board from menards the other day. Been excited for a long time to attempt my first bow build. Gonna start soon!!
For people on headphones your music is deafening - as in capable of causing hearing damage - if the volume is adjusted so your voice can be heard during non-music intervals.
I want to make a bow, like a serious bow, so I'm wondering if that dog bone was actually a good idea to place on the back of the bow. or if it was more of a joke and something else would be better.
I know the purpose of this was to encourage me to make my own bow but all it did was convince me that it's worth it to pay somebody else several hundred bucks for one.
I have decided that I am a “maker”. I have been making things my whole life long from kites to bikes to furniture to knives to guitars to music. I believe my next “make” will be a bow. Thank you for the inspiration and the incredible videos that you do!
I see so many of these 'creative' type channels where self professed experts show you how to do things, then they go and do something that destroys your faith in them entirely. I will never understand people who cut wood that way, or break any of the grain, or rip their cuts. It drives me nuts.
You have definitely inspired me to try this. I know I will probably gave to make quite a few before i master the art of Bow making but i definitely want to learn and start making my own
Between your videos and Clay Hayes I made a pretty good functioning red oak board bow on my first attempt. 63.5 inches 37lb at 28 inches. As a beginner I only wanted a light weight bow but could have had a nice 45lb bow it was a shame to have to take the poundage down. So I am very grateful to you for the knowledge and rapped that my beautiful creation works !! Ps I’m new to archery this is my in .... joining an archery club soon. Sooo much to learn.
The quality of your teaching it's amazing thank you for all the input for the great personality for such a motivational positive attitude it's what it's all about you are appreciate it thanks again brother
I just started a red oak bow after ordering the book from Clay Hayes. I learned 10 times as much from your video as I got from his book. I am just at the tillering point so I hope to end up with a good bow. Will be following you closely and will be looking for your tillering tool. Thanks for taking the time to record the long and tedious process of building a bow.
Good video. I've made 20 bows (30-65lb), broke my first 4 allempts about.20yrs ago. Too bad I didn't see this back then.i encourage young guys to make& use them. Most of my relatives have one of mine to shoot targets, carp, deer, pumpkins, etc. it's a good feeling to successfully make your own.
Just made a white oak selfbow that combines very wide flatbow limbs tapering to reinforced, pyramid-shaped nocks. It took many day to tiller correctly and my apartment looked like a sawmill but now it shoots like a dream and it is only 132 centimeters unstrung.
I have been making bows for years. I don’t use Any power tools all by hand. I started on bow boards and honestly. ...,..I have built some board bows that out perform big fancy staves all day. The bow I mainly use is a red oak board bow I backed in sinew. It’s 7 years old and dropping turkeys still.
I’ve always been into archery but about 5 years back I obsessed over making bows. I borrowed the entire bowyers bible and read them cover to cover about 3 times. I ended up getting some properly aged red oak staves and made 2 custom bows for me and another friend. I backed them with some elk rawhide and added some custom accents to each bow. It’s only about 52 inches long so the draw isn’t too long but the process it took me to make both bows, will stick with me forever. Your videos are definitely fanning the flame. I think it’s time to break out the ole draw knife. Keep up the quality content!
I have the same four books, I read parts of them several times to figure out what the author was saying about early wood and late wood, I didn't have anyone to ask.
I have looked at a lot of bow building videos, so far yours is the very best and you give it a sense of adventure. I plan on building my own some time in the spring. Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Hey man, great work here. Your explanation of different ways to calibrate the bow by removing material was really detailed and interesting. There is a ton of garbage on youtube but its great hobbyist content like this which makes youtube so great. You are saving important knowledge for use by future generations. Content like this will be a time capsule for eternity.
Another winner, it won't be long now 'til I give a go. Just waiting for the all clear to go outside (sheltered). Big thanks for the inspiration, I haven't made a bow since I was a child. 🙂🏹
After 15 years and several major surgeries including a T-4 spinal operation, I decided to get back into archery. I had been using an off brand 70lb compound I bought in 1995, that I couldn’t pull more than 20”. To see what weight would be suitable, I guessed about 40 lbs., I bought a recurve kit off Amazon for $75, that came with 9 aluminum arrows, target, and glove. All the arrows were true, the assembly was a snap, and it shot surprisingly well at 15-20 yards. It’s given me time to reacquire my skills and strength, and opportunity to spend time reviewing what I want to buy in the future.
I’ve watched tons of your videos you’ve taught me a lot about making bows. I’ve tried for months tried 8-9 times before I finally had one that I could shoot an arrow with! Takes time to get it right but it’s so worth it!
A solid build with your usual brand of passion and enthusiasm. It's on my list of projects and thankyou for keeping the dream alive. Keep up the great work and stay safe
You keep uploading these videos, and one of these days I'm going to give in and try my hand at failing to make a bow
I’ve done it as well. Made it from fir and all 5 snapped in half
Go ahead and start I've started making two one for each of my boy's.
to fail means to get expierience! at every next try you know even more than the last time.... keep on and you will see! No one is perfect at the first try!
You’re getting just as much praise for your videography/editing skills than your bow making and woodworking skills. Well done in both areas sir.

Couple years back i tried making bows and struggled, i wis i saw your videos because i learnt littery so much from this video alone that i didnt know I was supposed to do
Thabk you so much, i am going try making bows again
I got one for you that might be interesting- Basalt. basically volcanic glass fibers. stronger than normal fiberglass but works pretty much the same, inexpensive and comes in a variety of forms from rebar to mats, to just the fiber. I just think a volcanic glass bow would be conceptually awesome.
That's an interesting idea
Bravo! this is a great companion to your previous video for a long bow build from a board.
A very thoughtful do-it-yourself video that actually shows the process without the use of pro equipment! There's nothing like a good teacher!
Now that I've seen this I'm gonna try a skate board deck.
Did you do it? If so, how did it turn out?
I watch your videos on how to make bows, I'm learning
Just finished my wife's Christmas present. A board bow. Thanks Kramer. She loves it.
If I may, could you get some frames on the side when shooting? its really appealing when we see the limbs bend.
Hey Kramer,, man you have stirred up some of my childhood memories of building bows.. It’s a mystical feeling.. Thanks for re igniting my memories and challenging me to build one for my self.. Thanks.. Dreaming big..
another question: how much do you have your pencil sticking out of the gizmo?
what's a good rule of thumb?
That’s the best I have seen someone break down the steps to making a simple bow. Really want to try this myself. Your shooting skills are fine by the way. Those shots will bring home some venison for sure. Keep up the good work sir.
God bless Kramer!!! YOU ARE A GIFT :)
A famous Bowers book or Kramer's Video??
Go Kramer's "Revelation" the last book we need :)
dude u too!!!!!!
Superb soundtrack and editing! Today I have made my first bow. Its only PVC bow but it is first step to this unknown terrain.
I’m literally in the middle of building an oak bow right now
@@kramerammonsarchery Hows the Bow coming along ? I got one EXACTLY the same, and Red Oak....made from a previous Kramer video !
If my understanding is correct, remove material from the belly of the side that bends less.
Wow! Never knew there was so much to consider just to make a simple bow
I'm just making one hell of a bow with oak and fiberglass, boy... the tilering part is not as fast as he shows here, it's been 1 week and still scraping wood... I may be doing something wrong though, cause the string does not pull as easy as he does during the tilering part. (Sorry for my english)
English is my first language and you write it 20x better than I do
I think it depends on how thick your wood is. If it's thicker it will take longer but u should be fine
I am in the middle of working on building me a bow, attempt #1
How did it go?
@@philipsikulec614 I got busy doing other things so I haven't completed it
Wow you made this video super easy to understand, for someone that doesnt know anything about archery (like myself) i really want to try this now
Those are some krispy klean transitions. I'm impressed with the editing and the content. You got a new sub here bud
Gathering a few hand tools & bought a oak board from menards the other day. Been excited for a long time to attempt my first bow build. Gonna start soon!!
Any way to get that pdf? dead link.
Was also wondering about this
Yes, built my own bow,, after watching your DIY Home depot video,,,superb bows,,,did 3 now
For people on headphones your music is deafening - as in capable of causing hearing damage - if the volume is adjusted so your voice can be heard during non-music intervals.
I really appreciate the back hand throw into the bin, because so few people practice this, and I do this myself.
I want to make a bow, like a serious bow, so I'm wondering if that dog bone was actually a good idea to place on the back of the bow. or if it was more of a joke and something else would be better.
you can google traditional Turkish bows they have also superior crafting techniques and wider selection of materials
Thank you for this video and the plans! My 11-year-old daughter and I followed them with great success! Great job!
3:35 looks like one of my cuts😜
I see so many of these 'creative' type channels where self professed experts show you how to do things, then they go and do something that destroys your faith in them entirely. I will never understand people who cut wood that way, or break any of the grain, or rip their cuts. It drives me nuts.
You have definitely inspired me to try this. I know I will probably gave to make quite a few before i master the art of Bow making but i definitely want to learn and start making my own
I'm guessing when he plays D&D he's the ranger.
in all but 4th edition, the kids under 7-10 edition.
You made the video so satisfying to watch. I haven't gone traditional bow shooting in such a long time. You make it look so fun shoot arrows.
Very cool content. Not a fan of the editing. Manic.
I didn't want to comment on the editing technique you asked about until i saw it in context. I love it!!
I once made a bundle bow from tent poles. it was surprisingly powerful.
You sir are a great trainer i really like how thorough you are about the process
Awesome video!!! Thank you so much. I'm a craftsman looking for a new adventure 👏
Hey Kramer, thanks for the metric measurements!! Thanks as always you really are feeding my bow making stoke! 😁
Just made a white oak selfbow that combines very wide flatbow limbs tapering to reinforced, pyramid-shaped nocks. It took many day to tiller correctly and my apartment looked like a sawmill but now it shoots like a dream and it is only 132 centimeters unstrung.
How could ANYONE not like this video?
Throwing the rawhide bone into the bucket looked so smooth.
I have been making bows for years. I don’t use
Any power tools all by hand.
Thank you
so much for this tutorial.
I was intrigued by the poplar bow. Now I need to start this !
Just shaped my first bow handle. The pistol grip came out really well
Probably one of the most informative bowyer videos I’ve ever watched! Great video sir! Really makes me want to try my hand at making a bow!
Another winner, it won't be long now 'til I give a go. Just waiting for the all clear to go outside (sheltered).
Big thanks for the inspiration, I haven't made a bow since I was a child. 🙂🏹
This channel has such a “The Woodwright’s Shop” vibe. I love it.
I love all your videos, bubba. You're such a showman.
This is the best most informative video out there, thank you for this, because of you, im finally building a bow!
IMHO you create the absolute best content on UA-cam. I love your videos.
love your videos, you make it look easy to make a bow from a stick! I am 69 and would love to give it a try. thanks so much.
Salt that wood glue to keep it from sliding. Thanks for another great instructional vid. Well executed!
Yo your energy is so positive and genuine. Great video.
Hello friend greetings from México ILove your videos and I justo start building bows thanks You so much, god bless You
