Don't Buy Lindberg N. O. W. Titanium Frames

  • The N.O.W. Titanium collection is characterized by a design flaw that has been ignored by the Lindberg Company eventhough the negative feedback has existed for over 2 years.
The thin composite that makes up the front of the frame is 2 millimeters thick. To understand the defects, one has begin with how the prescription lenses fit into the frame.
The prescription lenses have to be grooved and installed using a cold mount method because if you use heat on the thin composite, it deforms.
When the cold mount method is used it begins to create micro fissures on the material. As time goes on and the eyeglasses are worn, these micro fissures expand and are soon viewed as cracks by the wearer.
The second design flaw is where the titanium temple and the 2 millimeter composite meet at the temporal edge of the front of the frame. Regular wear and tear caused by the natural opening and closing of the temple hinge causes the stress fractures that quickly turn to cracks at this meeting point.
    Conclusion:
Yes, they have 4 different nose pads choices,
    Yes, they are lightweight,
Yes, the Lindberg Company have designed genius frames,
    Yes, Yes, Yes,
    Bottom Line:
Do Not Buy the Lindberg N.O.W. Titanium frames.

I went through three frames because of this issue. First frames had the micro-fissures that were immediately visible upon receipt of the new glasses. I didn't wait long enough for these to crack - I went straight back to my optometrist and they replaced them. Second set actually cracked - took a few months I think but they broke in the upper inside corner of one of the lenses. Third pair has been flawless and I am NOT careful with my glasses. I take them off with one hand, don't keep them in a case etc. etc. No problems at this point. I only found this video because I was searching for the right way to clean them.

Thank you for posting this video. I found it only after placing an order for these frames. I didn't know what to think, as it's such an obscure subject for a video compared to, for example, bashing the latest iPhone. I like them a lot and receive frequent compliments, but it turned out that you're entirely correct.
They must have been fine for a while, but after two years I cleaned them off and took a good look in the light. There were obvious cracks leading away from each of the nosepads, a few other noticeable cracks around the lenses, then faint stress fracturing around much of the frames and toward the temple hinges. I, like most people, spend these two years sedentary, so it's not like they were abused. I am now sending them in under the three year warranty, but I don't have high expectations for when I receive them back. On removing the lenses they did discover there were no grooves cut around the perimeter of them, as you mentioned, so that probably also contributed.
I actually met the Lindberg representative at my doctor's office, and she explained that this is ordinary wear for the material, alike wearing denim, and that it doesn't pose any durability concerns. I found the same stress fracturing in the corner of one of the demo pairs there. I don't know how they justify selling clear frames that can't perfectly stay that way over such a relatively short period of time. A pair of wholly titanium frames will last a lifetime, as could many standard plastics.

I've had a NOW frame for 3 years and I'm on my second one. On the 1st, I had the lenses replaced, and whoever did the work did not mount them correctly - one was crooked and left a deep groove in the acetate at the bottom rim trying to press it in, and in the struggle he/she also pushed the temple and left another groove where the temple meets the acetate (the 2nd design flaw that's mentioned). There were no cracks from what I could see, but it never felt right no matter how much the optician adjusted it. I ended up getting it replaced under warranty. I've been hesitant to replace the lenses in my current pair for fear of going through a similar hassle (plus I'm out of warranty). I'm 2 years in on my 2nd pair and so far no cracks, but I do see wear marks from the temple touching the acetate at the hinge. Overall I've loved these glasses as they're super light weight and haven't had any other issues. I'll likely not get another NOW frame as this video reinforces what I've experienced, but definitely will get another pair of Lindbergs from a different collection.
    Thanks for the video.

Great video informing future customers of these defects. Aesthetically I love N.O.W since the composite front accommodates thick lenses well while stays feather light. But these defects do exist. Today my wife's frame broke part at the middle of the bridge after three years, and mine have been seeing minor cracks at one of the hinges.

@@ragon747 I am a dispensing technician myself, and I own a pair of Lindbergs, and I have recently ordered another pair; the N.O.W. series. I've had experience edging and fitting lots of Lindbergs; the NOW series, Spirit, Strip, Buffalo Horn, Precious, etc, and the bottom line is, it all comes down to the way the lenses get edged. The lenses really need to be edged to meticulous precision, and unfortunately a lot of lens labs who need to pump through hundreds of jobs a day, dont have time for that effort. If you purchase a pair of Lindberg from an optometrist who has their own lens edging equipment in store, and a dispensing technician who has had proper training in fitting lenses into these, there will not be issues. I spend the time resizing the lenses in 0.05mm increments until I have cut the lenses the correct size, measured with an electronic caliper, take in many consideration such as patient's prescription, lens thickness, groove placement, etc, and I dont have issues with the frames. The N.O.W. material is a relatively flexible material, but admittedly, quite weak to expansion force, so correct lens sizing is essential. Most NOW frames that have stress fractures are either due to customer's mishandling of the frame, or the lenses being cut too large (yes, 0.1mm too large will be a problem), and Lindberg does provide specific instructions on lens fitting procedures, and if not followed, unfortunately that does become the fault of the lab, or the shop, because hey, the lenses weren't cut according to Lindberg's recommendations.

    I 100% agree :
First time I noticed the fracture lines on the inside of the frame, I recognized the pattern to be stress fractures (I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering). They replaced it
Second time: it came back and they said it's my fault
third time where the titanium meets the composite cracked and disconnected. They replaced. Only reason I bought because I thought they will last for years

Hi, I have talked with my optic centre here in Aarhus, Denmark. What I have been told is basically:
    - Regarding the first issue: This should be absolutely obvious to all the opticians selling those frames. Lindberg is clrearly sending instruction of how to mount glasses to those frames. If an optician used heat for such frames it means that he or she did not do the basic thing before starting to work with any frame from any company - research how to work with them;
    - Regarding cracking issues: Lindberg did acknowledge the problem. They changed the composition of the frames a few years ago, so the material is more resistant towards any cracks when taken care of the frames (or handled) properly;
I spoke about those problems also with my optician who took care of my glasses before and who said that the first issue more represents the professionalism of the optician. There is no way he would ever try to use heat towards the "slim" category of the frames.
    Cheers.
EDIT: I did some edits to the style of the comment (mainly typos).

The design of using plastic as the part of the frame where the orbital resides is a bad idea.

Thanks for this video. Unfortunately, I found it while waiting for my 6612's to arrive from Denmark at my local optician in California, so now I'm a little bit nervous. I bought them in the matte brown color, so hopefully any cracks won't be so obvious.
This will be my third pair of Lindbergs, the first two were the 1020 model, and just like the 6612. But the 1020's hinge connections to the frame were always problematic. Great idea conceptually but suboptimal in real life.
I get the sense that Lindberg glasses are designed for people who have 6-8 sets of glasses, and are engineered accordingly. Phenomenal aesthetics and nice flash, but lousy durability for normal people life, like a Bentley or Louis Vuitton. That said, I work in professional services, and even (especially) for a guy in his 50's, youthful aesthetics matter, and I get compliments on my 1020's all the time.

Personally not too concerned about a little scratch or crack if I cannot see it in my peripheral, I feel this video is way too aggressive towards not buying them. I'll return though in a few months and let you know my feedback as it's been almost 3 years since this vid.

@@The_kRazed My favourite pair. It’s funny you comment now as I rolled over them in bed only 2 weeks ago and bent the side, however I’m due a new prescription and I will simply be repairing the same pair. The frame itself is still in great condition. Currently wearing the tom ford private edition which are 2.5X the price, but i would take Lindberg over these any day

The glasses are very comfortable and stylish but the durability is simply not there. I have owned two pairs of Lindbergs and each broke at the bridge after 3 years. For such expensive frames, this is simply not acceptable. The titanium arms are strong, but the composite material holding the lens is highly susceptible to breakage, especially where the frame has been drilled for the nose or arm housing.

Sounds as though you are misinformed.. if the lenses are cut by the specifications Lindberg provides, the durability issues you mentioned cease to exist. To tell people, explicitly, “DO NOT BUY THE LINDBERG NOW TITANIUM FRAMES” is robbing people of the opportunity to buy the frames they really want because of issues that really lie in the hands of your optometrist and their expertise. I’m glad I didn’t see this video before buying mine, I’m very happy with them.

i strongly disagree, even though we had some breakage in this series it has been replaced by lindberg and for the volume we have sold the ones we got back where only around 8%.
Most of the problems occur with the way you mount the glasses, inexpert mounting is mostly the cause of breakage, also methylated alcohol is never to be used on the frames, although i agree it is not the strongest one in the lindberg line i think it is still a good frame and worthy of the lindberg name

Lindberg are absolute junk. I am now on my fourth pair because the first three failed in various ways. Overpriced and underperform.

Lmao this video is so uneducated. Lindbergs are AWESOME as long as you use an optical with skilled opticians and lab techs.
