- The OverDrive guys discuss how Mike Babcock responded to Alex Ovechkin’s comments on the Leafs needing to play like a team and whether him publicly agreeing with them is a good move for morale on the team.
Ovechkin - "They are still a young group of guys and I hope they're going to learn, but it's up to them how they want to do it," Ovechkin said. "If they want to play for themselves, or if they want to win a Stanley Cup, they have to play differently."
Babcock - "Well, I don't know if he's wrong," Babcock said. "I think he knows because he lived it. If you look at Steve Yzerman, he lived it. A lot of guys live it until they're 30. You've got to decide whether you wait until you're 30 or do you want to figure it out now? It's the ultimate team game and you've got to sacrifice individual rights for team rights."
"He lived it," Babcock said. "He was the guy. Then he figured it out. 'This is what we've got to do to win.'"
Matthews - “How many times did (Washington) lose to Pittsburgh before they finally broke through? …You learn from those experiences and you try to capitalize moving forward.”

@Tutti Frutti I don't agree. Ovechkin's statement isn't about individuals, but about teams. He understands that it took a team effort to win a cup. The Capitals have tended to like players who specialize, including most of their "defensive defensemen" minus Carlson. It's about team effort and roundedness, not about individuals. As for Ovi in particular, he's an all-time great, sorry.

Yep as a NYR fan, he can thank that club for being a major roadblock (Hank) that possibly took out 1-2 chances for Washington to to touch the cup earlier than 2018. 2012, 2013 and 2015 all going to the length of the 7 game series. Those NYR teams didn't have any real PP QB like Carlson. They certainly didn't have a top line like Ovi/Backstrom or a top 6 with Backstrom and Kutz. Rangers grinded out those wins to be some stacked Washington teams. Ovi knows wtf he's talking about here.

You guys are what’s wrong in Toronto media to a T and it’s horrible. After the game he said “I didn’t like it but he’s live that”. Went on to talk about how it’s took him time to get where he is but showed his respect for Ovi as an Elite veteran of the league. To call it fawning over him is a joke. I was listening last week and you guys talked for 10 minutes about Mathews not playing to his contract and not mentioning Marner, Tavares, or Nylander. Just picking the big attention grabbing name for online hits even though the guy had 9 goals in 12 games. Absolute joke of a show.
I'm a Leafs fan and I didn't have any problems with what Ovechkin said. He basically said the Leafs still are a young group that has a ways to go, acknowledged they're a good group of players but eventually have to take the next step at some point if they hope to really have some success down the line.
Am I the only one that seen two star players carry their teams into overtime and the more experienced star won it for his team.

"I know the leafs are out two first line forwards, playing with a depleted defense and offense, just finished their 3rd or 4th back-to-back in October, but (insert jab here). It's the media that creates the tension and the narrative around the leafs in the public eye and whats going on in the lockeroom, and we are all just supposed to take these opinions as bonafide facts or reality. These aren't "anaylist", there is no analyzing here. These are opinions, not always based on facts or objectivism. I don't let opinions, especially ones that are subjective and unattached to the reality of what's going on in the organization, dictate my opinon. But Ovi is great, I mean its fucking Ovechkin.

Coach Babcock is a no bs straight shooter though and he just put his team on the spot. Good for him. The Leafs are under performing and Matthews needs a wake up call along with John Tavares. Both Ovechkin and Babcock have been a part of cup winning teams and know what it takes. Matthews and Tavares have not even gotten there.
I like the Leafs but I'm sick of hearing about them all the time. What about the other Canadian teams? I get that TSN is based in Toronto but I'm sick of hearing about them.

This is why I stopped watching hockey. You show sportsmanship and people lose their minds. These commentators just want hockey players and teams to hate each other. Yes, be competitive, look out for your team, and fight for your wins, but it shouldn't cause outrage if people express sportsmanship.

I find it amazing how much each and every thing is over analyzed when it comes to the Leafs. Ovi makes some obviously true comments and not only are they scrutinized, but all the Leafs players reactionary comments too. How the hell do you play in a situation like this? Other players are left alone to learn how to win, make mistakes along the way, and come through the other side as a more complete hockey player. Leafs on the other hand are praised to the point where they believe they have the game mastered, or criticized so badly they lose their confidence. We aren't even out of October yet, and honestly not a lot that happens right now even matters. Do you think a comment by Ovi is going to matter in game 7 against the Bruins? I understand passion for a team, but obsession is a different thing, and obsession will have a lot to do with why this team fails AGAIN.
