- This video is a reupload since the original channel was deleted. Fortunately, I was able to save the video before it was deleted, and since I feel that the Concerto for Piano Vs. Orchestra relies a great deal on visual humour, I just had to reupload it. Hopefully, the original creator won't mind. This comes from an Evening at Pops concert recorded on May 28 (or 29),1974.
In the early 90's my trombone instructor introduced me to PDQ Bach. At that time I bought 2 of his cd's...my favorite being 1712 Overture. But I have never watched anything of him until now. Holy smokes!! Maybe the musicians (or the trombones 😁) really love this humor!! I laughed!!!! And rewatched! And laughed!! I never knew he did live performances! Genius! God bless him!
I have been looking for this for fifty years! Thank you!
@@billbusen it is also important to note that PDQ Bach, that great melodist!, presents in this Concerto many tunes which have been taken up by other composers; Imitation is the Sincerest form of Flattery.
Thank you SO MUCH for this! Peter Schickele a gift to the world.😂
Huge PDQ fan. I saw him in a concert in the mid 70s where he played some of his "straight" compositions as well. Since he wasn't "in character" as PDQ he talked quite refreshingly about his life in Fargo, ND, playing bassoon in the Fargo-Moorhead (across the river in Minnesota) youth orchestra. Apparently, when he got to conservatory in the Big Apple he felt totally outclassed by the talent he met there, and when the PDQ Bach thing, which started as more or less a one-time gag, turned into a career, he naturally grabbed onto it. Many years later, I met an NYC musician (she played French horn in the pit band for Le Miz), who had known him from way back. Amusingly, according to her, all the "real" NYC musicians hated Pete, because he wasn't a "real talent" and, of course, he was richer and more famous than any of them. If you succeed, your friends will never forgive you.
I have a composition degree. I believe i am correct in saying that is takes REAL technique to do what PDQ does and for it to work. clowning is very hard to pull off it seems to me
his grasp of counterpoint IS STUPENDOUS.
his "friends" were a pack of snobs
for myself I decided I had no real talent as a composer so stopped before I ever really started. at age 66 it really is too late to start it up again so i let it go
Thanks for the kind info. So, kind of an André Rieu parallel there.
i had no idea he was still working after the 70's--he was a joy and marvel in our undergrad days--thank you
Thank you!
His genius of creative arrangements is always satisfying. Watching his physical performance takes it to another level! 🤗
I loved going to his concert when I first married. It was a surprise trip for me. Loved the entire program. Bought the album and still have it to this day.
Thanks for uploading this. It was a lot of fun! Brings back memories, too, of the 1970s.
Thanks so much for uploading this! An absolutely classic Schickele performance.
Absolutely brilliant and delightful, as always!
I've seen a number of Prof. Schickele's, er, um, P.D.Q. Bach's pieces performed, but not yet this one!
Thank you very much for sharing!
A great concerto beautifully played; the numerous non-.cadenzi are exquisite.
You mean when the piano plays the 6-4 chord at the end of the first movement followed by improvised cadenzas from the members of the orchestra?
I heard this original broadcast on the radio -- so good to revisit it!
We played one of his pieces in high school orchestra. It was a number of rehearsals before we could finish with a straight face.
I discovered P.D.Q. Bach while a Music Major in college and decided to sign my Music Theory Assignments using my nickname "DEE". D.E.E. (Do Easily Every time) Bach. I claimed to be the youngest of P.D.Q. Bach's children and the last of J.S. Bach's hundreds of grandchildren. It became kind of known among all the Music Majors and Minors as a standing joke at school.
This brings back memories for me. The Northeastern University Choral Society ( NU is a five minute walk from Symphony Hall) performed P.D. Q. Bach's The Seasonings at Symphony Hall with Fiedler conducting. It was an absolute blast!
Saw him with parents in the 90s. Needs a biopic. So innovative and hilarious.
A piano Concerto that requires a flashpot for performance. Delightful :-)
Thank you for sharing this gem!
Fiedler and Schickle; what a combo.
The University of Southern North Dakota (@Hoople)most distinguished musician, composer, and…. Genius. RIP.
The road map when he gets lost is brilliant.
There's Peter's perennial Stage Manager, Bill Walters, in his usual loud jacket and tie. ❤
I got to see a performance of this piece live. So fun to see the stool blown up at the finale.
Spoiler Alert!
I saw "An Hysteric Return" the second PDQ concert. Never laughed so hard in my life!
at Symphony Hall?
I've always wondered what explosive they used!
What a genius he was. RIP, Maestro!
I love how PDQ Bach NEVER resolves his phrases
Nice, clear copy. Great.
The sweet sound of Schickele and pyrotechnics..
how much fun!
Genius!
If you enjoyed this you must see his Abduction of Figaro. It's here on UA-cam.
@@blairribeca5858 I already have
@@pdqbachfan When The Abduction first came out on VHS I drove a hundred miles to my tech savvy cousin who made for me a bootleg copy.I showed it to all my friends at Bryn Mawr .I then lent it to the couple who founded Opera Atelier in Toronto. The general opinion was that if his music were not so good it would not work.Imagine how difficult it must have been to perfect the timing of the gags. Thanks for posting this.
The pianist sounds like Kermit not giving a damn. rofl
Infinity funnier that Victor Borges.
They are both great.
😂😅😮❤❤delightful
Is this work quoting the Norwegian National Anthem, "Ja, vi elsker"?
Piano 1, Orchestra nil
Very entertaining portrayal of a "primadonna" pianist. No doubt, some of them are a bit like that at rehearsals. Orchestra musicians, tell us their initials paleeese
So funny!
....Can't help but wonder how much Arthur Fiedler actually enjoyed this; looks like a lot! 😏
Is Peter still around? I forgot about P.D.Q. Bach
Sadly gone.

@ yes I have seen it already.
Hilarious!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oh Gawd, was that bleeding laboured, or what? The Yanks just don't do subtlety!
NOT funny anymore...
Beautiful music
But is this supposed to be funny?
I find it to be boring slapstick!
Yes, it’s supposed to be funny.
Besides the slapstick, there are a lot of "inside" jokes such as the appogiature that don't resolve, the "inverted" cadenza," etc.
@ is this supposed to be funny, clever?
corny
