The CD version of this is hands down the best remake of all time in my opinion. I will never forget the first I heard this on the B side of a CD single in 1991. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The power that Tate's voice pumped into this song is beyond measure. Chills every time!
This was actually one magic night in 1992 🙂 Why do I remember? Because our family had just returned stateside from being stationed in Germany and we couldn't wait to watch American MTV... it was so different from European MTV ❤
I really wish Geoff would do more of this type of music. I saw the Queensryche Cabaret tour in Chicago (House of Blues 2010) and it was simply glorious.
I really wish Geoff would do more of this type of music. I saw the Queensryche Cabaret tour in Chicago (House of Blues 2010) and it was simply glorious. A medieval theme music crossover epic concept album please! ha! I dream.
I don't know, as far as I know his instructor also teached Opera singers. But he was trained to sing Rock. His instructor also teched Ann Wilson, Laney Stayne and Chris Cornell. His Instructor's heir is Robert Lunte, who founded the Vocalist Studio. I don't hear Bel Canto techniques in Geoff's singing. If you do please point it out as I'd like to know. Thank you.
I adore Queensryche and Geoff Tate.....but the best version of this has been and always will be Simon and Garfunkel. Queensryche will always be the best metal band in my book but Simon & Garfunkel killed this song in the best way possible. No one can top their version, not even my Geoff Tate.
if you're looking for this...there is a import CD with just this song and one other...the other song escapes me...I'll have to dig thru my drawer and find it
bsetchells he does? His voice is shot now. I'm not expecting him to be as good as he once was, since aging has a huge effect on singing, but he's...terrible anymore.
It sucks ass that the first progressive metal band that wrote the most thought provoking, mind-expanding music has parted ways. Geoff Tates' vocals crushed everyone and still do. And Chris DeGarmos' guitar work and songwriting stand alone. Metal has a vitality of its own and has taken music to the extreme ; it cannot get any harder, faster, technical, emotional nor progressive. That is why it is the sickest form of music humans can create.. i.e. Korn( first album: finest work using bagpipes) the first progressive metal band Queensryche, (key boards, piano work, female vocals, and operatic overture). Metalcore band As I Lay Dying (piano work) and God Forbid (electronic violin and piano work). I am sure there are more metal bands I am not aware of that use others musical instruments not mentioned.
I know Geoff is not this amazing now days but damn ...... This whole MTV show was just amazing. During their day there was no group that could touch them. No they are without Geoff and Chris = No more QR.
One of the very few males on the planet that can pull off even attempting to sing this particular song and have it go as it was meant to be sang. This acoustic version is the best, their concert versions just dont flow like this version does, and this song have to have 100% of the whole song in tonal flow, or it just sounds bad, with partially sang good parts. This is one of the most difficult songs to ever try to sing, due to have be on key tune flow with every single note and word 100% of the song all the way, or it just doesn't work well.
What is this like, 2 octaves below what's in the record. It seems he had already started to traverse to the lower register by this time. As up until Rage for order he traveled very comfortable on the high registers.
they/Qr- never wanted the make it into a DVD if you would see the whole uncut version you can see why.. MTV was very RUDE to the guys, but they used some nrs on the building empires DVD, but I might be mistaken..this was not on the dvd mentioned
@FalseWitnessScoob Actually, S&G didn't write this song. It's hundreds and hundreds of years old. 1400's, if IRC... The "Canticle" part was all them (Paul Simon). I love S&G's version because I grew up with it, but Geoff's voice is sooooo perfect for this song. Brooding and dark....oh my gods, so perfect!
Get a tuner and play Rage For Order, then play Empire. For Example Walk in The Shadows and The thin Line, similar songs. You can use for Example the AP tuner. You'll notice what I'm talking about. From G6 to G4, right in the Chorus. On the other hand... WTH? If David Lee Roth does it over Blue Grass, anyone can do it. "This is Mean Street" ;) But taste wise. I think it sounds more medieval/celtic in the high pitches than in the lower ones. They should even had gotten a Pipe.
@rbrebrook This version is a little disappointing. The one in Empire's remaster has him Reaching the Next Octave on the Second half and then coming back. Much more to my liking.
MTV single handedly fucked the music industry up, fan wise, for about 20 years until MTV became un-reality TV now thankfully the digital age has removed mtv from the picture and we can all go back to listening to music instead of hyping bands for their videos.
Think THIS Kix Azz? Then y'all needz to check out "Sound Of Silence" done by a band (appro. named) Heir Apparent - who are also from the same home town as Geoffie and Ryche!
Geoff sang in a way appropriate to the setting and mood. As enjoyable as his upper range is, it would not have fit the mood of the song and most likely overpowered everything else.
His voice - their sound - still gives me chills
Tate the man with the golden voice,
Never get tired of old Queensryche
Greatest voice in rock imo
@@benitokamelo252yes way
Best version of this song! Geoff Tates voice is everything!
Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo. The deadly duo of ungodly amounts of talent.
The CD version of this is hands down the best remake of all time in my opinion. I will never forget the first I heard this on the B side of a CD single in 1991. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The power that Tate's voice pumped into this song is beyond measure. Chills every time!
+Alan Wilds its badass
Serious bro, heavy emotional singing
Best unplugged ever.
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!
What a voice! What a voice!!!!
This man has the most amazing voice.
Gorgeous.
A great band , and an awesome performance by one of rocks great vocalist. I love this band !
Queensryche was and always will be one of the greatest band there ever was, not a bad song ever...
Magnificent cover!
Tate I just can't get enough of you. The good old days of great music, now lost to rap crap.
Beautiful song sung by a beautiful man. #GeoffTate4ever
This was a great performance by Queensryche. I remember watching it back when MTV was still worth a crap.
This was one of the best live shows ever. Geoff Tate's voice is like ear candy.
I loved Queensryche. I still do. Just miss the original lineup.
WOW... makes me shiver
most amazing voice in metal....peroid
Fuckin Love this song!!! Thank you Geoff!! Truly awesome Classic!!
powerful bass voice! powerful! bravo!
I agree 110% with Laura ND. The haunting quality of this version blows me away.
The drum beat almost makes this song a march - a unique take on it. Well done. I also like the the lead singer's pitch modulation.
I love queensryche
I wish I could have been there! Magic. Thanks for the post.
Freaken amazing voice on Geoff !!! I love this band !
I have been meaning to check this out for a long time. Awesome version.
Might just be the greatest remake of all-time!!!
I rmeember weatching this! I love both versions both unique both gorgeous... You go Goeff!
This song makes me feel like a knight, cloaked in black, crossing a dark valley in the middle of night under a full moon.
Very nicely done!
GREAT SONG & AMAZING COVER
amazing.......
excelent!!! One of the best songs from this great group
I've always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare
I really wish Geoff would do more of this type of music. I saw the Queensryche Cabaret tour in Chicago (House of Blues 2010) and it was simply glorious. A medieval theme music crossover epic concept album please! ha! I dream.
Can you imagine if he collaborated with Blackmore's Night?
My baby..Noone can touch him..Love you tate!
perfection😗
Geoff is the Best. ¿Who else could sing so beautifull?
I don't know, as far as I know his instructor also teached Opera singers. But he was trained to sing Rock. His instructor also teched Ann Wilson, Laney Stayne and Chris Cornell.
His Instructor's heir is Robert Lunte, who founded the Vocalist Studio. I don't hear Bel Canto techniques in Geoff's singing. If you do please point it out as I'd like to know.
Thank you.
Easily the best version of this old folk song.
Geoff Tate delivers it as the knight and Simone and Garfunkel delivered it as the bard
wow !
WOW!!!!!
This guy has a real good voice, like this version better than their hard rock/metal version.
great song ... ann
Would anyone have ever thought metal bands would cover Simon and Garfunkel songs? Geoff’s voice is amazing!!
Love the metal version...but this is good too.
Ecxelente cancion de mis grupos favoritos, es de las mas escasas enColombia
I adore Queensryche and Geoff Tate.....but the best version of this has been and always will be Simon and Garfunkel. Queensryche will always be the best metal band in my book but Simon & Garfunkel killed this song in the best way possible. No one can top their version, not even my Geoff Tate.
This was 'Unplugged' - the building is on 54th St and 10th Ave NYC
you are so right
nice
Geoff is Awesome...
Look for the orginal. Search 'Queensryche - Scarborough Fair '
@j800r Makes sense. I agree with you.
DeGarmo without Tate does not work, Tate without DeGarmo does not work
They were a great team.
if you're looking for this...there is a import CD with just this song and one other...the other song escapes me...I'll have to dig thru my drawer and find it
It was the Night of the Ryche and the totallied Rocked
the 2nd greatest voice ever, and he still sings great.
bsetchells he does? His voice is shot now. I'm not expecting him to be as good as he once was, since aging has a huge effect on singing, but he's...terrible anymore.
@j800r Yeah, his upper range is rather powerful. Would've blown the speakers out!

I couldn't agree more!
I know Geoff is not this amazing now days but damn ...... This whole MTV show was just amazing. During their day there was no group that could touch them. No they are without Geoff and Chris = No more QR.
S/G made it popular to the modern world, tho...
And QR kick it in the ass. Tate has a seriously intense voice.
Magic!! Guys anyone has the torrent or knows wher to find this fantastic unplugged? Pm me please

Those were the real Queensrÿche.
Sadly nomore...
You guys raise a great point..WHO THE FUCK WATCHES MTV,ANYMORE???..and,WHY???
Any chance of sharing that fortune with us? =)
Fabulosa versión! Aunque me hubiese gustado que agregasen las estrofas cantadas...
Too bad Geoff didn't go full on vibrato in this version.
First time hearing this!
Unfortunately, Geoff Tate is no longer in the back--apparently a control issue erupted, and Mr Tate lost :-(
That should have read "no longer in the band"
@oker59
It's preference.
@13ShadowsintheGrave He could do it - Operation Mindcrime level of heavy of course - but medieval themed - meh I dream :)
The drummer should have sat this one out.
agree .. see kathys song cover Albert croak on youtube.
it was eMpTy V..
@waynestl
the non-acoustic version is better than this acoustic version. See how that compares!
@TraditionalTKD more like he didn't wanna blow the roof off. :P
He doesn't jump to the next octave? Why?

any idea on torrent concept? if so pm me i have it for you
The only thing about MTV thats like it was then is the name MTV inself. The same goes for VH1. At least there is Palladia.
@rbrebrook This version is a little disappointing. The one in Empire's remaster has him Reaching the Next Octave on the Second half and then coming back. Much more to my liking.
Geoff Tate is my God
Far far better than the awful electric version.
feth, that dude's chin could kill people.
7 people probably couldn't get it to play.
Seriously, QR. Keep to you roots.
MTV single handedly fucked the music industry up, fan wise, for about 20 years until MTV became un-reality TV now thankfully the digital age has removed mtv from the picture and we can all go back to listening to music instead of hyping bands for their videos.
if you understand the concept of torrent SURE pm me
