    We are so excited to see our Portofino 52 hull the right way, we make the trip to Dubai to check it out for ourselves!
    We are astounded by the size and space inside the boat and reflect on how the shoulder and flared hulls create so much more space and liveability on the boat. Of course, we have experienced these benefits with the 42 foot performance cat that John built so those learnings have been used to improve the benefits of space and comfort while still keeping the boat fast and chic....
    So join us, the Barefoot Doctors as we explore the first hull the right way up and even see the shape of the second already taking shape really fast...
    Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
    Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
    All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
    Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
    Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
    WHAT IS TUFMINDS
    The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea.

      Thanks JT, as long as it is as good for us as we expect, we will be VERY happy! Not many people understand how good shallow draft, lifting keels and beachability is, so others are tending to go for the more obvious boats....

    That is a good-looking cat and a very nice walkthrough tour of the bare hull. Just one little thought - I found it odd that the hulls are constructed separately instead of a 1-piece superstructure that included both hulls and the bridge deck being constructed all at the same time. In my opinion, building an aluminum catamaran this way would allow watertight bulkheads made of a solid piece of aluminum reinforced in key areas to traverse the entire beam of the boat making it super strong against flex instead of 2 or 3 sections welded together. Building the hulls and bride deck separately and welding them together, in my opinion, will put a lot of stress on the welds and not on the structural bulkheads that are designed to handle the loads when the hulls twist against each other on the water.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 місяців тому

      HI Ganzon Guys, thanks for the detailed comment and explanations. The difference between aluminium and fibreglass / carbon / wood is that properly welded aluminium is stronger than a larger sheet and then welding the cross beams and T bars makes it 10x stronger again. As Raffaele also said in this video, welded angles are much stronger than straight edges too.
      Like you, I was used to trying to get large sheets to avoid joins when building the other boats but this is not the case in aluminium, I understand... The stress testing of the boat has been calculated and there is almost no flex in the boat from end to end even when the boats whole weight is taken on the far corners. This FEM calculations was shared in a previous episode last year - here is the link:

      Hi Andrew - glad you see it that way because we are certainly trying too! While everyone has different priorities (level of performance, level of space, top lounge or not / shallow draft / beachable) we think as folk realise the different advantages, a lot more will request or demand those features in other boats and we certainly do hope for the Portofino 52 to be a game changer!

    Loving how different the approach is on this boat - you guys are getting me excited! With regards to cans of coke: An empty aluminium can approximately weighs around 15g. That means you'd need roughly 67 cans to have 1kg. Each keel has 2.5 tons of aluminium, and I''ll assume a further 1 ton for the "tunnel", Salon & mast - Therefor Total aluminium mass is about 6 Tons. Giving you about 400, 000 cans of coke :)

This isn’t a catamaran, it’s a vault. 😋👏👏 I’m so thrilled you are showing us the “bones” during the construction. I have a greater appreciation for the workmanship and safety components applied during the build process. I’m so excited for you both and the next milestone of connecting the two components to the main structure will be worthy of a celebration 🍾🎉🎊 My guess on the coke cans is 736,000 cans!

There are many nice boat projects underway but none is as interesting or has me as anxious to see finished as your Portofino 52. The more I view its progress, the more I like the company and the philosophy of aluminum as a construction material.

    Some suggestions:
    1) Heat Pump for efficient long lasting cooling and heating, including for hot water
    2) Make those lifting centerboards easily detachable should they become bent and unable to fold away
    3) Diesel is a dependency that can be obviated with wind and solar but if you must a small generator is all you should need.
    Good luck.

      1 - interesting, will discuss with Raffa but he is using a heat exchanger for heating and drying wet clothes in the wet room.
      2. Yes it will be easily removable ....
      3. Wind is low quantities of power , solar is great and we are hoping for water regen due to our good boat speed without having to use high emission engines like the old style Beta engines that HH use...

    Im a merchant marine and repairman. One thing i notised in sail boat builders is that draining fueltanks seams not inportant. In an engineroom the dayly rutine is draining water from fueltanks. This prevents clogging in filters and emergency stopps. Plastic or alu or steel tanks all have breathing pipes and the humidity is an ongoing thing.
    There are nice boll and kirsh filters self cleaning to run safely ...
    Best from sailorbear :)

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Bjorn, thanks for your comment and advice. We have not reported on the other feature that Raffaele is putting in all the Portofinos is an automatic fuel polishing system to whenever the engine is running, the fuel in the tanks will be pumps separately through a fuel polishing tank so the cleaning and separation of water / dirt / algae is done automatically all the time.... I presume this will cover the issue you are describing - please let me know if I've missed the point...

    • @bjornholmberg3208
      @bjornholmberg3208 6 місяців тому

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 filtering before fuel going in to the engine is good. But moisture ( water) is heavyer than diesel so it will collect in the tankbottom. To prevent too much water a lowest point in the fueltank could be a drain. In mearcant vessels this drain sludge goes in a sludge tank. But the priciple is the same. A fuel polishing could be a suction from tankbottom and the problem is solved. But some drainage must and probably to a spill tank. Otherwise if suction side is not at lowes point in fueltank the amount of water is still there . And uncertain reading reamining fuel could be missguided because the water is at bottom in the fueltank.
      Best to you from the seabear :)

      Yes it is a great technique in the design that most of the "performance" boats don't have - HH, Outremer, Gunboat, Garcia etc.... In the naval design world, they are mostly stuck on the principle of "low volume = faster" but then it has no liveability....

    With an aluminium boat, I would be terrified by galvanic corrosion in hard to inspect places.

    • @gbsailing9436
      @gbsailing9436 9 місяців тому +1

      All boats have their issues; Aluminium has the galvanic issue of course, as does steel; Fibreglass has osmosis and del animation issues as well as less strength in certain areas depending on build; Carbon is the same as fibreglass depending on quality of build/workmanship etc. All of these issues are well known and documented. They are easily controlled and managed with appropriate measures and knowledge by both Owner/s and manufacturers. So they are not really an issue in today's world. As long as you don't do anything silly like drop a bag of small lead balls into the hull you should have no problems.

    Exciting times! and it's all looking great!
    I listened to your hull design explanation intently as I've been "pondering" this with my own design.
    There's a lot in hull design and for different reasons of which all are valid.
    However with modern high performance multihulls does the old technology still hold true or valid?
    Historically if a catamaran did 10 knots that was impressive, today that's basically not worth even mentioning cos it's so expected.
    With the advent of lighter construction, lighter and better mast and rigging, huge advances in sail technologies. One wonders if true high performance catamarans remain displacement type hulls or could be in fact now becoming planing type hulls with speeds quite often over 15-18 knots.
    It really is something to seriously consider for true high performance multihulls.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 місяців тому

      Yes, you are right in that the variations in speeds achieved are dramatically different and the formulae that are used do not take into account the ease of the boat lifting itself out the water and getting past the hull speed without planing like a motorboat. I believe that the relatively poor performance of the polars on the Outremers is because it does not lift itself out the water easily at lower speeds.... It takes a different hull shape to do this and we believe we will have it on the P52 - but we have to do the sea trials to see exactly what she will do...

    Some assumptions required but here goes. An empty coke weighs .5 oz but is only 26.6% aluminum (ref ALUMINUM CAN LIFE CYCLE
    ASSESSMENT REPORT OVERVIEW) so the aluminum in the can weighs .133 oz. You can therefore get 120.300752 cans in a pound of aluminum. A hull weighs 2 1/2 tons or 5000 pounds so you can get 601,503.759 cans per hull. Assuming the central portion of the cat is equal to a hull in weight, then the entire cat in cans is 601,503.759 * 3 or 1,804,511.28 cans. Thanks for this puzzle I enjoyed it as I do your channel. We owned a wool shop in Nowra and my mum created the most lovely, knitted clothing. Oh I'm so excited, can u tell me what colour the hulls and decks are going to be please. Where will Exp Barefoot be launched, so I can start saving up for my plane fares and accommodation, because I'm going to be there, even if it kills me. Can u direct me to the episode where I can see the full plans of our 52, so I can decide what cabin I'll be using. 😲 Luv ya both. 😙

    after all you both have been through the past couple years I'm certain the travel woe's were nothing. Great to see you're both smiling.
    As for the Coke cans, NONE Coke cans are made from aluminum alloy 3004.
    Your Portofino is most likely being made out of 6061, which is a bit of an upgrade. That answers only if you want to be technical about it.
    Given that a Coke can weighs 15 grams and there are 453.6 grams in a pound 2000 pounds per ton, 2.5 tonnes per hull, 2 hulls, I'm going to guess about 302,400 Coke cans could be made from the hull of your Portofino. Of course, I figured that from American Standard so there's plenty room for error :)

    Hi John and Eli, I was going to wait to see you next week to ask some questions, but I decided I couldn't wait. I noticed in the renders that the sugar scoops did not seem to have a drain prior to the location of the rear doors to the diving and WC area of the owners hull. Is there a drain for backwash over the sugar scoops? How do they manage any over flow there? Or is the door track the only egress of water back down into the bilge? Does it drain into the engine compartment? Is there an oversized drain under the door track area with a hose that then funnels the water down to the bilge? You can wait till next week to discuss if you wish. I realise you guys must be busy traveling back and forth. Will Eli stick with the colour schemes in the renders?
    It's looking good. Given that hull #1 was 2.5 tonnes, A quick calculation of mine indicated somewhere in the vicinity of 345,000 cans. My actual figures were less, but I added more because it wasn't specified how much AL is used to join the two hulls (including plates and welding) and then the removal of the temporary stays they have in both hulls currently. This is not allowing for rudders and centreboards/mechanisms etc.- just as it at todays viewing! 🤞
    Catch you next week. I hope you were able to watch my brother Graeme's last video on Prophesy Trimaran. Have a great sail with Graeme. Fair 💨's and following 🌊's!

    Looks awesome - the only thing that jumps at me is the displacement volume, it seems small for a boat this size, granted this one will be lighter than say a lagoon. With all the awesome features immediately above the water line, wonder if it makes sense to double check the displacement vs weight calculations as a late correction will be exceptionally painful. Good luck, love how it looks and even more all the clever features that are going into it, seems like it will be well beyond the youtube wave of cat upgrades.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Mickey! The boats displacement is 16.5 tonnes with several tonnes of carrying capacity. The narrow hulls are calculated to cope with that displacement and the architects have checked th figures and run the performance data on the loaded boat too.
      Yes the features on this boat do go far beyond the "usual" features on production and performance cats! We were so impressed when we discussed all the features with Raffaele and he was able to add the extra features that we wanted too...

    Rectangular windows with sharp corners may not be the best solution for an aluminium hull. The de Haviland Comet demonstrated that problem in spectacular fashion, back in the early fifties. Would rounded corners provide a better solution?

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  11 днів тому +1

      Thanks David for that insight. Hopefully the difference is that the aluminium hull is much stronger than the thin plane aluminium and the windows are not under the extreme stress that the plane windows are under. There will also be a strip of silicone to buffer minor movements while in a plane they are bolted on tight, I believe. But if they break, you will be the first to know!!!

    At 7:50 into this video you show where the waterline at the stern will be. Only a few inches above this is a large horizontal flat area; the bottom of the stern scoop. Won't this flat area slap and pound the surface of the water when the boat pitches in waves? It appears to be so low that even at anchor it could be slapping the surface. Many designs intentionally drag (submerge) the lower part of the transom to prevent the stern from lifting clear of the water's surface and then slapping when it comes back down, even though this increases drag at slow speeds. The small transom on the canoe body is shown to be half submerged, but just above it is the flat that will normally be just a few inches above the water. I have observed that even quite small horizontal flat areas being slapped by waves at anchor can make an annoying amount of noise.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Jack and you are quite right! We also get a lot of slapping in the Leopard 45 because the stern slopes upwards and is a large flat area that slaps with any waves from the rear (reflections off harbour walls or waves coming from the opposite direction to the wind at anchor.) We have raised this question with the designers and they do not think it will be an issue.... We will see and we can always extend the hull shape out to the end as is the norm if we need to...

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  6 місяців тому

      Hi Paul, thanks for the good question and at this stage we are not sure but we understand that the insulation that is used on the aluminium boats for heat and cold protection also significantly dampens the water noise. So we expect that the water noise will be less with aluminium than GRP fibreglass and it definitely is much less than carbon that is a high magnifier or noise which echoes through the whole hull.... But we will see when she is launched!

    According to ABC Australia.
    Aluminium Can Facts
    An aluminium can weighs just 15 grams which is equivalent to three candy coated
    chocolate buttons.
    The walls of an aluminium can are just 0.11mm thick - about the diameter of an
    average human hair.
    Australians use more than three billion aluminium cans per year.
    The energy required to produce one aluminium can is the same as the amount of
    energy used to recycle 20 aluminium cans. That’s because aluminium has to be
    extracted from the bauxite which requires huge amounts of energy.
    One tonne of recycled cans saves five tonnes of bauxite.
    So, the answer for the 2 hulls only, is 151,333 cans.
    To ship these cans requires 19.45 pallets, with dims of
    56" x 44" x 102" each containing 7,780 cans . A tractor trailer load is 22 pallets.

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 If the tube (pipe) that extends down into the tank from the top to slurp out the contents when pumping out is a different metal than the tank (hull) then galvanic corrosion could occur, just like outside the boat in the sea water. Insulating the tube and any parts of a level sensor gauge or having them be plastic instead of metal would help. If you put a sacrificial zinc anode inside the tank, near the bottom so it's submerged even when the tank is almost empty, you could check it through the cleanout/inspection port and see if corrosion is happening. Checking this would be a yucky job, but since the zinc will corrode before the aluminum, you wouldn't have to check the whole inside surface of the tank. If the zinc is OK then the tank walls should be good.
      There is a coating (like paint) called Kreem that is used to protect the inside of metal fuel tanks. In steel tanks it stops water that has sunken to the bottom, under the fuel, from rusting through the tank. A coating similar to this, maybe soft, rubbery epoxy, could be applied inside the tank. This would insulate it electrically.
      Using the hull as the walls of the tanks seems like a great idea as long as you can prevent corrosion. Having no problems with broken mounts or tanks moving around in rough seas is a good thing. A full tank is very heavy and can apply a lot of force to it's mounts in storm conditions. Integral tanks avoid a lot of mechanical problems as long as you can keep the chemical/electrical ones under control.

I have asked the questions about integral aluminium tanks in boats for waste, fuel and water and several of the big brands do it successfully (like Rita, Ferrreti etc) so there are solutions to preventing the corrosion and Raffaele knows the risks and things to avoid...
