That period was the first phase of the High Modern that was ushered in by fundamental scientific discoveries that generated the great influx of new significant (!) innovations - such that can lower the cost of living. Also, high rates of the science-and-technology progress created expectations in the masses of "a coming breakthrough to the other side" (to a new society, capable of solving all the problems in the nearest future), making the masses very ideologically-charged and elevating the degree of collectivism, which generated leadership mania.
Lower cost of living resulted in a new demand, as a consequence, portion of middle classes in populations began to grow faster than it was growing before the second half of 19th century, and after WW2 developed countries saw emergence of wide (!) middle classes. In 1960's-1970's the total effect of new significant innovations began to fall, and starting from 1980's the status quo in the economy was maintained by blowing bubbles and by monetary pumping. Apparently, the elites were hoping for a new acceleration of science-and-technology progress that would allow to safely deflate old bubbles and to inflate new ones. However, presently this policy is coming to its end, which will mean the end of High Modern and the beginning of a long period of civilizational turmoil - the crisis of adaptation of the civilization to low rates of science-and-technology progress (to the new old paradigm of extensive economic growth). Previous period of the civilizational turmoil may have been the Thirty Years War, which was the result of hard landing of the economy of Central Europe after a long period of economic boom (that was the result of progress in technologies of mining and processing of metals)

The 1960's saw the rise of the Rockefeller Kingdom.
They appointed Presidents, their associates decided who would lead Congress.
The milking of the Spanish Empire had begun.
Vietnam was the declared beginning of the demise, as Africa and Iran stopped delivering Tribute.
One by one the Mighty US Colonial Army left their foreign outposts, Niger was the signal they had lost the Economic War they began at the turn of this century.
That sums it up a bit better.

@@danielhutchinson6604 Do you really think that China would behave better if it was a hegemon? There is no such thing as benevolent hegemony. On the other hand, once the civilizational turmoil starts in earnest many people around the world will become nostalgic for the relatively peaceful times of Pax Americana
