- Learn how to get from the international terminal at Haneda Airport into Tokyo.
If you’re going by train, I recommend the monorail.
Another good choice is one of the many clean, safe buses.

Finally a video with a clear explanation! Watched a dozen before and was even more confused and intimidated! After this video, I feel confident that I can do it! Thanks so much!
Katrina R lol I know right
This is really helpful, I already read all the information about going to Tokyo from Haneda, but your video give me the context and visual that could guide me when I arrived at Haneda. Thank you again, kind sir. Btw, awesome hat!
You're welcome, and thanks for the hat compliment!
I am going to Japan for the first time in 2023, this is one of the best video's I have seen! Thank you
You're welcome, and have a great time!
Best video I have seen explaining very cleanly how to get to Tokyo.
That means a lot, Bill. Thank you! Enjoy your trip to Tokyo.
Thanks Jason, I'm heading to Haneda Airport on Thursday. Haven't been there for about 20 years and things have changed heaps. Keep up the good work.
My pleasure, and will do! You're going to love many of the changes, and they just keep coming. Shibuya will be transformed by 2027. For details, see www.nippon.com/en/views/b07801/. Have a great trip!
Very informative, indeed! We're landing at Haneda Airport 3 days from now and our first time in Japan. Thanks so much, Jason. Very clear presentation. The BEST!!!
You're most welcome! Enjoy your first time in Japan!
Thank you so much! I will be arriving to Japan on the 1st of July and this really helped with my anxiety of getting lost!
Excellent! Make some wonderful memories.
Talk in Tokyo with Jason Kelly Thank you! I am here right now. Going to Shibuya soon! So far so good!
Enjoyed your video very much Jason. Clear and concise. You would make a great narrator!
Thank you, Raymond!
I enjoyed your blog. I'm looking forward to our planned long layover at Haneda airport. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Your videos were direct and straight to the point unlike the other confusing video to get into Tokyo from haneda. From just watching your video I know exactly how to get to Central Tokyo from haneda.
Fantastic, Antonio!
You deserve more viewers. Your video is very clear and easier to understand. Thank you very much
You're most welcome, and thank YOU for the kind comment!
This is super helpful! Nice to know what to expect right when I land!

Great video. I'm landing in Tokyo on a Monday at 5pm and I've heard the Yamanote line is crazy busy during rush hour. So the bus ticket counter info was very useful.
Yes, the trains are packed during rush hour. You're smart to take a bus, and you'll get a good view of the city en route. Have a great visit!
Thanks Jason. It’s very well presented, simple and crystal clear.
You're welcome, Marlita. Have a great trip!
Great Video, Great Info... Thank You
Thank you for the clean, clear and illustrative video! First time travelling and this helps lots!
You're welcome, Dee! Relax and take it all in. What a fun first trip!
Thanks so much. 1st time in Japan in a few days. A little more relaxed thanks to this video 😀
I wish I would've see this video prior to Tokyo layover, I got stuck taking the other line (took 1 hour or so from Haneda to Shibuya area), now I know when I go back this time as a destination to take the monorail.
Live and learn! You'll be in better shape next time. Once you've used the monorail, you'll never go back! I hope you had a pleasant layover in Tokyo.
What a fun video full of great info - thanks for the smiles. Can't wait to visit Tokyo!
Great! Thank you, NitroRoo!
Love the Hat! Thank you for sharing. Great information!
You bet!
Thanks Jason - Brilliant video
Very helpful, thanks Jason!
This is very good video, thanks Jason.
Now here is a really GREAT video!!!, Thank you Jason. I don't know your history, this is the first video of yours I have seen, but I'm really impressed. I've seen a couple of others on this subject and they sucked. For example, they did not mention I could get to Shinjuku on the monorail. I'll do some more research on this, just to be sure.
Wow, you know how to make a guy's day! Thank you for such a heartfelt compliment.
I'll be travelling to Tokio at the end of the month, so super helpful video, I've actually saved it to rewatch it later. And to the one question I had, I got the response in the comments. Thank you ;)
Excellent. Have a lovely time in Tokyo!
I have seen so many videos about this, and this has been the most helpful so far! Great job!
Thank you, and have a wonderful trip to Tokyo!
this video was really helpful when i arrived at haneda 4 weeks ago ... took the monorail out of the airport in the morning ... had to stay at the airport over night cos of the damn typhoon trami .. it arrived just when my plane from canada landed so i was stuck at the airport haha but it was a good experience made me explore the airport for hours ..
So glad to hear it! If you're going to be stuck in an airport overnight, Haneda is a good one.
Thank you Jason for such a well made and information rich video
My pleasure, Varun. Thank you for the kind words!
Great info! Thank you.
You're welcome! Have a great trip!
Thank you so much! I'm going to Tokyo by myself and I was very confused/scared about the public transportation. THANK YOU
You are most welcome, Vix. Remember: you will be fine!
This is the best video I've seen! Even my 5 yr old son said " He was a very good video."
Good to know info. As i'm planning my first trip to Japan Shinjuku to be exact for a 2 week stay. I hope i don't get lost in the airport. My only wish was a direct flight from Boston, MA USA to Haneda but it isn't offered. And i just DO NOT want to fly into Narita far to long a commute after such a long flight from what i've been told and been reading. I think by bus from Haneda to Shinjuku where my hotel is, is around a hour or a bit more not to bad at all. Narita is a nightmare even by train it's long. Glad to see all the friendly kiosks and English speaking help. I know i'll need it since i'm traveling alone.
You're wise to choose Haneda over Narita, and you'll have no trouble whatsoever getting to Shinjuku by bus. It's one of the city's primary destinations.
As for the need to change planes, take some good reading and listening material and view the long journey as relaxation away from your usual routine.
Have a great trip!
Honestly I just felt fortunate when Japan Airlines started flying to Boston even from Narita. Narita is also an amazing airport. Granted it is a bit far, but personally I like flying internationally from Narita a bit more cos the shops after security, in my opinion, are better at Narita than Haneda. Haneda is not as big of an international hub than Narita. Haneda hosts more domestic flights. But either one is amazing! You won't be disappointed, and you probably wouldn't get lost, but you want to do some quick studying before you head over, especially if you're trying to minimise the cost. :)
i feel much better after watching this! thank youuuu
My pleasure, Jonathan!
Nice video... good info
Heading to Tokyo in a few days, so this is really helpful! Thank you!
With pleasure, Jeanine. I hope you had a good time.
Very well done and informative. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I thought your hat was stupid at first, but it really goes well with your smile makes the video awesome!
After all, thank you!
I've watched a few videos on the initial landing and getting around, this video is amazing
Thank you, Robert! Much appreciated.
This is one of the most helpful videos about traveling to Japan I have seen! Now I don’t feel so intimidated about going there in April
Wonderful, Moon Shadow! I assume your trip was postponed due to you-know-what. The good news? Japan is still there, still lovely, and awaiting your eventual arrival.
I always found the train a bit confusing when I was there in 82-85. Your explanation is very helpful! I hope to visit again soon. You have been very helpful.
Wonderful! A lot has changed since '85. Another visit would fascinate you.
@@talkintokyo - Thank you sir. I am planning on visiting within a year. Saved your video to my "favorites". I just want to stay at a hotel close to the airport for a few days and get my head together. My mom is on hospice and I am caring for her. The stress is incredible. Be good to have a Japanese beer again.
@@bigtoad45 Sounds like you could use a break, and Tokyo would provide a good one. Don't stay near the airport, though. Head into the city for a hotel experience that makes your journey worthwhile. You want to walk out the lobby into the scene: Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi, Ebisu, or even the currently hip Shimokitazawa.
@@talkintokyo Thank you very much.
Thank you! Very helpful
I really needed this video. Thank you
You're welcome, Lilac. Have a lovely trip!

As a super anxious person this was really reassuring and helpful. :D

From another J. Kelly!!
Ha! I hope you enjoyed Tokyo.

Thank you, Gerry! Yes, it is a pity and I should probably get cracking on others.
Great video, thanks ;)
You're welcome! Enjoy Tokyo.
Thanks very helpful
this is very helpfull thank you sir ....
somehow ease my worries on how to get to Tokyo. Thank you.
You bet, Dionisio. No need to worry!
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you so much! I’ll be following you step by step when I visit. May I ask, we are in Japan for nine days, can we purchase a return mono rail ticket?
Good help
heh i went to tokyo in March 2017 took the Keikyu line, instead of getting a ticket, i strongly recommend a IC card, I think the monorail was a slightly more expensive option. overall transportation is pretty basic and easy in tokyo. also recommend a app called Hyperdia it tells you where to transfer etc
how nice
Thank you for this video! Just a quick question, for the Monorail option.. if I were to select the "Transfer Tickets > Via Hamamatsucho > JR Line" and select Shibuya, would that ticket include the monorail ride from Haneda to Hamamatsucho and then from there to Shibuya station? In other words, I would use that ticket to get onto the monorail as well as onto the Yamanote line afterwards to get to Shibuya?
Thanks
You're welcome, Victor! Yes, the transfer ticket would get you everything you need to get to your destination, Shibuya in your example. Enjoy your visit!
Does the jr pass cover the Tokyo monorail & yamanote line?
Thank you
Good day Sir:This video is very helpful for me to plan my 9 hrs.layover at Haneda airport.I wanna take this opportunity to glimpse Tokyo.Do you have another video of how to return to Haneda from Shibuya? HOw often does the monorails runs from Shibuya? Can I buy my round trip tickets in advance?Hope to hear from you before my flight.Thank you in advance!
Well, I'm afraid I missed replying before your trip, Jen. You are either waiting in Shibuya for my reply, as you've been for the past five months, or you figured it out. I hope the latter!
I should make more Tokyo travel tip videos. They seem greatly needed.
OMG thx
this is the most easy to follow guide. i must take the bus i guess. no transfers
Thank you, Rob! The buses are great. Enjoy your trip!
Strange how the bus was almost double in price to the trains etc , I know here in London it would be the other way round for sure 👍 very helpful video
Yes, it is a different way of thinking. I attribute this to the buses in Japan providing a guaranteed seat, limited capacity, and more granular point-to-point transportation. Note that for longer trips, the prices come closer together. It's well known that cross-country travel costs about the same no matter the method, coupled with a wry, "Almost like they've planned it."
Hi Jason! Very informative! Is there a single ticket(monorail or keikyu) I can buy from Haneda airport going to Meguro station? Or do I have to buy the 2nd ticket at yamamote line?
Thank you, Simonette. Yes, you can buy what's called a "transfer ticket" that will take you all the way to Meguro Station. On the monorail, you would transfer at Hamamatsucho by following the JR Transfer signs to the Yamanote Line. The ticket machines would give your transfer ticket back to you so you could use it again for the remaining leg of your journey. Please see:
www.tokyo-monorail.co.jp/english/tickets/purchase.html
I will do a 15 hr layover, this video has helped a lot... do you by chance have another video of how to return to Haneda from Shibuya? or can you tell me what time the first train runs back to the monorail station? Can I buy my round trip tickets in advance?
I don't yet, but should probably keep these types of videos coming! Thank you for the nudge.
Nice video. Can i ask about the midnight buses?2 years ago we arrive late night around 11pm and we did not made it to the monorail. The bus counter was close and almost all shop as well. The informtn desk did not help as much as we expect and end up sleeping in the airport with small kids which is there is place to really sleep.Any suggestion please we planning to go back this year. Thanks
Thank you! Some buses go later than 2:00 in some cases. For various options, see www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/en/access/bus.html
Rather than continuing to travel into the wee hours of morning, we find it more pleasant after a late arrival to stay a night at (or near) the airport. One good option is www.hanedaairporthotel.com/haneda-excel-hotel-tokyu/
excellent! one question.. Can I buy a Suica card at HND airport and use it on either the monorail or Keiyku line?... or even the bus? Thanks!!
This is probably too late to be useful for your trip, William, but nonetheless: Yes, you can buy a Suica card at the International Terminal Station. I hope you have (or had) a great trip!
Hi Jason...good job on the welcome to tokyo intro...please tell me for the haneda to roppongi route, I will take the monorail to hamamatsucho station...then walk for 7 minutes to the daimon metro station for the toei oedo line to roppongi station? Is this correct. Thanks much.
Paul Wee, Spore
Exactly right, Paul. Impressive! Now, if you could make the walk in the officially assumed 6 minutes, I'd be even more impressed!
Yo Jason, Thanks for confirming the direction. I will report if this is do-able or not after my arrival on November 3. Until then, cheers.
thank you
wow wwwwww.thats what we need
Does the green circle/yamanote line go clockwise? So if I wanted to get to shibuya, I would get off in 7 stops if I started from hamamatsucho?
What a cute beginner's question! All lines go both directions, so be sure to get on the train going in the direction you want. On the Yamanote Line from Hamamatsucho, yes, Shibuya is seven stops away. Here's a map:
www.metroeasy.com/yamanote-line.html
If I have a 7 Day JR pass do I still need to buy a ticket at 1:58? Im assuming I do to get from the airport to hamamatsucho station right? Then from hamamatsucho station I can use my JR pass?
Yes, you will still need to buy a Monorail ticket to get from the airport to Hamamatsucho Station. There, you'll hook into the JR network and be able to use your pass. Good job getting a JR pass, by the way. It's a great deal. Enjoy your trip!
hi, can we buy a return ticket at Haneda airport too? example I want to go to Tokyo, or I have to buy a ticket in tokyo going to Haneda airport? thank you
I like that " safe" and "clean" buses commentary. In Los Angeles the untoucheable homeless commuters stink and sometimes they act crazy.
I am 100% agree with you.... WTF is he talking about??? Japan is the most safe country in the world.... In US you can be shot dead once you step out of the plane!!!!
Is monorail or bus operate 24 hours? I maybe arrive midnight. Thanks for your information.
The last monorail is at 19:00 on weekdays and 17:00 on weekends, but buses go later than 2:00 in some cases. For various options, see www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/en/access/bus.html
Hello Jason, can you tell me what are the hours of these train systems? I will have a 15hr. layover in Tokyo and I want to know what time I need to return.
Here you go:
www.haneda-tokyo-access.com/en/haneda-airport/nightandmorning.html
The information counter are they open 24 hrs open? And buses too 24hrs open too?
What if we arrive in HND airport by 11:30 PM what would be our best bet to get to our hotel in Shinjuku?
You'd have to hustle, but you could take the midnight monorail to Hamamatsucho and then catch the Yamanote Line to arrive in Shinjuku at about 1 am.
Hello sir how to get iwakuni kuku form haneda airport
i took a irezumi sleve tattoo in norway because i really like the art style, but my question is, should i hide it when traveling around in japan this summer? i know its the typical yakuza tattoo style, i just dont want people to get confused and think im some sort of yakuza member lol x)
In almost all public situations in Japan, your tattoo will make no difference. You're a foreigner, therefore given great leeway when it comes to cultural differences. The one place it might matter is at a hot spring resort, where it's possible you'll be asked to avoid the baths or cover your tattoo before entering.
@@talkintokyo thank you for taking the time to awnser my qustion, i have been little nervous about the situasion :-)
@@hallaballaalla123 You bet, Eric. Don't be nervous. You'll be fine!
Great video, but you forgot the Taxi option. I guess that is the most expensive ... How much is it from thr airport into various parts of town ?
I skipped taxis because of their high prices in Tokyo. For example, it's 22 km from Haneda to Shinjuku Station, and costs about ¥7,500. At the current exchange rate, that's $70 one way! Take the trains or buses. They're cheap and fun!
Thank you Jason. Can you please tell me if Taxi's accept cash payment or only cards ?
Cash remains the preferred method of payment in Japan, but most taxis can also accept credit cards these days. I suggest getting plenty of cash from an ATM at the airport. It will prove useful during your time in Japan.
