from what ive studied, creosote tar and the creosote bush are not related. The original creosote tar(coal tar) was derived from burning woods, the first was beechwood. This was the preservative they found to preserve meat and later telephone poles. Creosote the bush(chapparal) didn't have this use. They just have a similar name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creosote
I'm jealous. Unfortunately I can't have everything I like in life in one place. I absolutely hate the cold so living in a desert with a massive cacti garden in my yard would be amazing. Its a shame trout and salmon need the cold water of the north to live. I didn't have the volume on, so you probably will find this a waste, but at 1:30 of your picture if the barrel cactus, there is a Santa Rita prickly pear in the background. 1:50 my heart ached seeing that barrel cactus uprooted. 3:34 there is a pencil cholla at the bottom of the video. 4:53 is an englemann prickly pear. Just north of you those monsters will live in the cold, but they don't stand tall like they do down there. 6"08 looks like a silver cholla. 6:34 is definitely a silver cholla. I'm surprised you didn't have a teddy bear cholla, but I'm sure you saw some. Great video.

I love cacti. I have 22 different species growing around the house. My wife is really sick of them taking over all of the window sills. I'm currently sitting in a basement that is about 55 degrees. I'll keep checking back to see your Sonoran videos.
Actually, we're both right. The Palo Verde was named the Arizona State Tree in 1954, and the legislature didn't pick between the Foothill and Blue (both native to AZ). Therefore, both types qualify as the AZ State Tree. :)
Okay, when we lived there we always heard it was the foothill but I just saw one source that said the legislature did not distinguish so it could be either the foothill or blue. Nice video.

Sorry for such a specific question, but can you identify the plants in the foreground of the photograph called "Mujer Angel" by Graciela Iturbide? It was taken in the Sonoran Desert in the 20th century, but I can't identify what kind of plant it is.

When I first visited AZ for the first time ever we pulled over to get gas and near by was a creosote bush and it stank. For the longest time I associated the Arizona desert with this stinky plant

There are certainly some plants that are dying. However, they're extremely minuscule in number compared to the vibrant, living plants. That's 'life' in the desert - as opposed to a managed garden. There is also no visual pattern to any of those that are dead. They are not in any type of straight line or area, rather they are just one here and one there - mostly far apart. The Sonoran desert is a quasi-tropical desert. It also has unique life such as saguaro, gila, javelinas/peccaries, and Jaguars nearby.
