  • We are scribing the first big logs onto the wall and this house build is starting to take shape in a hurry! These big logs are beautiful and full of character and its incredible to be able to to turn them into beautiful log walls for this house! It did not come without challenge however, they are so long and huge and that makes it very tricky to line them up perfectly and move them around. This log house will be taking shape in a hurry as we continue to place logs on the wall, its going very well and I cant wait to share the progress it you all friends.

    Welcome to Traplines and Inlines
I have the pleasure of sharing my passions for the wilderness, building, fixing and all other things interesting with my great group of UA-cam friends.
I have lived offgrid in the bush for over 3 years, but now I am moving to the next chapter in my life and am building a big log home as my next place to live. It is going to be an incredible journey building my own home. I am using logs I harvested myself and plan to do most of the work by myself. This project will be the main focus of my channel, with many other adventures along the way im sure!
    Thank you for watching

Doing good. I went to the Pat Wolfe log building school and built several homes. Tip for you, when you cut your saddle notch leave a bit of room up top, it will let you saddle sink a bit more. No more than 1 ". You are doing great keep up the good work. You can also make yourself a large wooden mallet using a piece of log. A good 20 lbs. Mallet will help seat you logs. Good luck.

Okay I want to know" WHY" the hell isn't (STIHL) sponsoring this kid and giving him every damn chainsaw and chainsaw accessory they make, he is showing what their chainsaws can do better than a thousand Bullshit commercials, cmon STIHL step up for this kid, and help him out. And maybe a manufacturer of a portable Sawmill send him a free one, Christ this kid could build a damn skyscraper with it. Phenomenal work and doing it by himself, absolutely remarkable. Kyle you are one extremely talented young man. Make this kid famous for all the right reasons. 💪💪💪👏👏👏👏👏

Hey brother! You’re killing it with your cabin and I thought you might want to get a wooden mallet for your chiseling so you don’t beat the hell out of the head of the chisel and a big headed mallet with a handle to fit your hand would be great for you. Thank you so very much for letting us live vicariously through you! Lee from Tennessee

The saddle is for shrinkage already Its like the norwegian notch keeping itself closed. If it shrinks it keeps it tight on the notch sides. But the notch has to be open from the top that gets covered by the crossing log. Also needs a relief cut along the top of the log. Never had a notch open up when making a tight scribe fit.

I have never built a log home but I have watched a few done in this style. I can't help wondering if cutting two mating grooves in the logs and using two splines (the gap between could receive the gasket) would not be faster a bit easier if you set up a straight edge and bolted a stop to the end of the bar. Now you just run the saw down the straight edge with your desired depth of cut, turn the around and run it down the other side for the matching groove. In the same way as a chain saw mill you could get as fancy as necessary with the straight edge (could be a piece of steel) and the trolley holding the bar tip. Make it adjustable for width with bearings for wheels. Once it is made to your satisfaction from there on out it would be a clamp on and go situation on all the rest of the logs. If the logs are grooved deeply enough they can settle down around the splines as they shrink. The splines could be made from wood, pvc, or whatever you like. Setting the straight bar jig from the center of each log would keep them all in line and still leave plenty of meat to wander on the outer surface of each log. The bar clamp on the trolley should be made with a threaded rod so that the bar can cut parallel kerfs to determine the width of the dado for the spline to fit into. That way you can set your kerf width. Once you set the jig up you could knock out a log in no time and still have a joint that accommodates the logs shrinking while also providing a place to hold the gasket. Personally I would drill and peg with rebar as well to keep any horizontal movement under control mid span. The logs can shrink down the rebar as they dry if the holes are just a bit oversize. Looks like a fine site for a home.
