  • The doctrine of total depravity refers to the result of the first sin of Adam, spreading sin to the entire human race and death to all humanity.
Man is not now as God made him. He has lost the crown and glory of his creation and has plunged himself into an awful gulf of sin and misery. By his own perversity, he has wrecked himself and placed a consequence of woe on his posterity. He is a ruined creature as the result of his apostasy from God. This requires that we consider, first, a man in his original state, that we may perceive his folly in so lightly valuing it and that we may form a better conception of the vastness and vileness of his downward plunge, for that can only be gauged as we learn what he fell from as well as into. By his wicked defection man brought himself into a state as black and doleful as his original one was glorious and blessed. - A.W. Pink
Man’s basic problem is not a lack of self-esteem. It’s not that he’s out of harmony with his environment. It’s not that he’s sort of out of sync with his Creator. It’s not that he needs to make a few adjustments to sort of getting God on his wavelength. Man’s problem is he is absolutely dead, and he is incapable of relating to God at all - God’s person, God’s truth, or God’s commands. - John MacArthur
We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we are sinners - R.C. Sproul
