    The bridge won’t last forever but this video will, thanks ❤

    Thank you, this was interesting. I'll be glad to never have to use the old Patullo Bridge again. The lanes are so narrow and the open sides are scary if you don't like heights.

    Another great video...and I never realized we were mispronouncing "Pattullo" the whole time.

    Dog you gotta turn the music down at the beginning of the video, it's way too loud. Otherwise, great video!

    I haven't driven that bridge since the early 80s (moved away) but even then the joke was you could drive the Pattullo to see if your car needed a wheel alignment or, if it didn't, you would need one afterwards. That bridge was a POS then and it's remarkable that it's taken this long to replace it. I'm hoping they don't name the new crossing after yet another corrupt politician.

    Very curious what other mega infrastructure projects are going on in BC, besides skytrain of course

      Kicking horse canyon just got completed last year. Still several kms of the Kamloops - AB 4laning left to go though. (If your into mega infrastructure projects, this is one hell of a read)
      The Fraser valley is FINALLY getting additional lanes along the trans Canada highway, although this won't be completed for a few years, they have broken ground
      Kinda related to BC, but the CBP (USA border patrol) is building a new crossing building at the aldergrove border.
      We finished the flood repairs from the atmospheric river a couple years ago along the coquihalla highway
      I believe the Burnaby mountain gondola finally got approved at SFU
      And Parks Canada might finally fund the twinning of the remainder of yoho national park.
      I'm sure I'm missing a few, but these are kinda the big ones.

    I've long been curious to know what led to the approach of the north end of the bridge being rebuilt in 1956. The original north end was a weird t-shape, which must have been a nightmare, so some modification was obviously needed as traffic increaded... but I've not been able to find anything about the decision to cut through Queen's Park... was there any controversy around that?

      Although I couldn't find anything about a controversy over the removal of some of Queen's Park, the only thing I could find was a pdf on the history of Queen's Park. Here is an excerpt.
      "In the post-war era Queen’s Park saw many improvements. However, the connection of McBride Boulevard to the Patullo Bridge came with the addition of traffic noise and the loss of the southern edge of the park to the new interchange at Royal Avenue." www.newwestcity.ca/database/files/library/Queens_Park_History.pdf
      I looked at old maps and it did take a large chunk out of the park for the construction of that interchange. oppositethecity.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/1947-roy-wrigley-map-of-vancouver.jpg
      I also found a map from 1880 before it officially became Queen's Park, but it is mentioned as a park, almost double the size stretching to the penitentiary. newwestloststreams.ca/timeline/

      @@HistoryOfBritishColumbia Wow, thanks for digging that up! Makes ya wonder why they didn't line up the bridge with McBride Blvd? I'm hoping that there must be news articles in the Columbian and/or Sun that cover the realignment. I mean, it's a big deal to cut off park space for a road!

    The new bridge will be out dated the first day it opens. Only four lanes total, what a joke. No building for the future.

    • @HistoryOfBritishColumbia
      @HistoryOfBritishColumbia  3 місяці тому

      Agreed. It is expandable to six lanes. Hopefully that this is corrected before completion.

      You can thank New West for that, they refuse to allow more lanes.

    Still so stupid that the plan for the replacement is for 2 lanes each way. Makes me want to pull my hair out and scream. WTF?! Spend billions on a new bridge that will be outdated before it’s even built! Can’t wait for the replacement project for patullo bridge version 3.0 to be announced two weeks before this one is opened.

    • @HistoryOfBritishColumbia
      @HistoryOfBritishColumbia  3 місяці тому +1

      It is being built wide enough to accommodate 6 lanes. I'm thinking there will be enough pressure to open it with 6 lanes right away or very soon after opening.

    • @AWSVids
      @AWSVids 3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah, as stated above, it's designed to be expandable to 6 lanes... but you're right that it is stupid they're not just doing it right away. New Westminster didn't want it to be 6 lanes, because they didn't want any induced demand coming into the city, while Surrey was all for having it be 6 lanes right away and pushed for it, but New Westminster wouldn't budge. They'll only allow it when traffic gets so ridiculously bad that they absolutely HAVE to do it.

      What has the NDP ever done that wasn't stupid ???

    • @andrewk7698
      @andrewk7698 Місяць тому +1

      They won’t ever expand it to 6 lanes because they don’t want to encourage car use. If people are inconvenienced in their private cars they think so much the better.

      Are you going to help pay for the expansion of McBride Avenue to 6 lanes? What about expanding King George Highway to 6 lanes west of 128 Street? I am assuming the pedestrian lanes is experimental to see how well it is used.
