A lot of Jokic movement comes from waterpolo, if you look more closely it looks like he is swimming. Like waterpolo player elevates to shoot, its essentially same movement with Jokic. Also one handed plays he do, he essentially doesnt need other hand to catch, distribute or shoot.
Thanks for working on dispelling some of the misconceptions regarding Jokic's athleticism. To me the three main misconceptions when it comes to casual fans evaluating Jokic's athleticism are: - There's this notion that keeps being repeated by media pundits that Joker can't jump over a phone book. But Murray, his team mate, has noted multiple times that he can jump a lot higher than people think. But why would he, in a game situation? Just to show off? Jokic does not waste movement or energy. Why would he jump higher than he needs to in order to score or pass? That not only increases injury risk but also increases instability in the movement itself, and on top of that also expends more energy, which may be needed later on. We may not see him trying to do moves where he goes sky high, but why would he even train such things, when they're not actually conducive to safety, longevity, or efficiency in the practice of the sport on top of not being needed? - His touch is not a separate thing from his athleticism and conditioning. To have such a great touch from all spots on the court, be for passing or scoring, while being guarded by other centers, one needs a lot of strength and stability in both their core and upper and lower body. - Then, there's the aesthetic thing - people tend to associate muscle hypertrophy and definition with strength and athleticism, but that's misleading. For example, I don't think someone would in their right mind say that a world champion long distance runner is less athletic than a world champion sprint runner - nor would someone think a lean mountain climber has less strength than a bodybuilder - they just train in different ways, because they have different needs. While most basketball players' training is more akin to that of a sprint runner, in many cases looking for explosion over durability, Jokic's approach is more like that of a long distance runner - he may not, again, jump sky high, but he will still be running and playing with the same efficiency long after many of the other players have collapsed due to exhaustion, as we can see in the end portion of the highest stake games. Cheers!
This is a correct observation and understanding of what Jokić is all about. He is simply different, and does not fit into the image of people who follow the NBA, who have their own opinion and attitude about what a top NBA player should look like. As it is an irrefutable fact, that Jokić is extremely successful in this sport, it simply does not reach people's brains, that such a thing is possible. Simply, according to them, he does not have the predisposition for such success. No matter how many times he shows that he is good, they are convinced again and again that it is just a coincidence.
Thank you. It’s so absurd that all of these pundits say Jokic isn’t athletic. That’s just stupid. Yes, he isn’t athletic in a superhuman, leaping out of the gym, black American sense. But his size, his touch, his footwork, his stamina, all, show that he is an elite athlete. We all know people who don’t LOOK athletic then you okay against them and they are amazing.
@@alexisrobbins1736 I'm really interested in what is meant by the term athletic in the NBA context. I thought that there is a general term athletic that applies to everyone, and it has nothing to do with the NBA league, but refers to a much broader concept. Now I'm hearing for the first time that there is that context that only applies to the NBA. Well, since I'm not very knowledgeable, what does that term mean, would you be kind enough to explain it to me a little more precisely.
@@alexisrobbins1736 No I really don't understand what athletic means in the NBA context. But athleticism whether in the NBA or not is multifaceted. Athleticism encompasses cardiovascular endurance, strength, power/explosiveness, hand eye co-ordination and overall body control. Jokic, compared to other NBA players, is elite in most of these categories. What he lacks, compared to other top level NBA athletes, is power/explosiveness. But his other attributes are elite even by NBA standards.
Jokic just looks like a huge Truck driver, but like Gypsy King strength wise, Joker is also a genius with pair of softest hands that could do brain surgery with a ball!
Anyone who doesn't consider Jokic the best player in the world right now is either a hater or a basketball ignoramus or simply doesn't follow basketball closely. When Giannis was a two-time MVP and NBA champion, he was the best basketball player in the world. In the last three years, Jokic has had identical success, so a little common sense is enough to conclude who is the best player in the world. Excellent analysis and interesting comparison with other sports.
his distribution of strenght is pretty equal between upper and lower body. that combined with excellent footwork and many other things make him what he is.
The term "athletic" requires prior definition in order to avoid confusion. If athleticism is purely defined in terms of running fast and jumping high, well he might be unathletic. But seems a very helpful definition as it fails to account for successful athletes at the highest levels. There is stamina, hand-eye coordination, processing speed and intelligence, bio-mechanics of throwing and shooting. In all these categories Jokic is world class.
Thinking Jokic diffident do any of those exercise. That set back 1 leg shot coming from behind is head came from having to older brother that stood 2 feet taller then Jocik when he was growing up. Guessing the only way he could get a shot off against them. The passing comes from playing polo has a kid growing up. If I was young and had a shot at the NBA i look for a water polo program. Great way to learn to pass.
From Pistol Pete Maravich to Nikola Jokic. Too bad Dejan Bodiroga didn't come to play in NBA., you can watch his best of, also Dusan Bulut best of... That is the way we (Serbs) think and that is the way we play.👍😎
Is a ballerina athletic? Or a linebacker? Both have different sorts of athleticism, just like a skinny ping pong player is athletic. Depends how you measure it, what it's for. Turns out you can play basketball in several ways. Who knew?
Idk if you know but despite his lack of vertical athleticism he actually is rank number 1 current. Comment would’ve been fire maybe 2 or 3 years ago. Nice try tho
@@blazefactor6849 I agree , I know it’s sarcasm. It just doesn’t work now since he’s widely viewed as number one, it would have worked maybe a couple years ago. Idk what I said could have made no sense at all.
I don't know much about strength and conditioning but from the ball side of things. If you are trying to replicate what jokic is doing you gotta realize that they to being a great playmaker is that you HAVE to be a threat to score. If the defense always has to account for you they will overplay you on your offball movements and your isos. That's when you can catch them ball watching. Watch all the assists he gets by passing off a pass he receives alot of that is being a threat to score off of his off ball movement
In other words, you don't know what to defend. Because it can simply do everything. As everything happens quickly, you can never understand what he will do at a certain moment.
And he uses his threat to pass the ball, whether it is a hand off or not, to blow by defenders. He used the threat to shoot in order to blow by defenders. He uses the threat to blow by defenders in order to shoot. He utilizes the simple concept of the "triple threat" to its maximum. It is a concept that all kids are taught when they start to play basketball
your problem is that you think in box in pattern, scheme...and you try to show that in numbers, statistic...like he is android and move/live in binary sistem...you canot see or understood Sixti chapel thru pixels, even now you canot understand how pyramids were made...or how Tesla was thinking...you canot describe genius...you can say talent, and thats it...canot go dipper, couse you dont have that ability, perspective...sorry, but that is it 😉

Love that you are first people to give credit to Jokics athleticism and strength.
Moves he does require insane amounts of both.
