  • How to install aftermarket amazon motorcycle gauges. This is pt.2 of installing the low-buck amazon motorcycle gauges on my CB750K project. In this episode we bolt on the aftermarket motorcycle instruments and see if they work... or burst into flames.
    Some things I need to add since filming the video:
    1) I haven't tested out the speedometer yet as it's currently -12 degrees Celsius here!
    2) These baby's are BRIGHT! The high beam indicator is craaaaazy bright.
    3) The wiring diagram from the Amazon seller was pretty darn accurate. The only catch was that the ground wires for the speedometer were not clearly identified. I had to use Ron's battery (which you'll see in the video)
    Here are the links to the parts that I used in this video:

    3.5mm bullet connectors - amzn.to/2tds0W6

    Dude! Love your vids, real fun to watch and learn. I have a question you might know: so I'm building a custom BMW R80/7 scrambler, and you need to have a charge failure light (generator light) for the charging to work. I also have a brake failure sensor light. What should I do go get these weird gauge indicator lights?

    While working on my CM250c I ended up having to buy two different sets of gauges. Both sets look the same at first glance, but there's a slight difference in the wiring.
    On the first set the neutral shares the same ground wire with the headlight & turn signals, resulting in the headlight & signal light not working when the bike is in gear. The second set of gauges has separate ground wires for the neutral and the other two lights, allowing the gauges and the bike to work properly. It was surprising as the two gauges look identical, but it turns out they are different models which share the same gauge housing & basic design.
    On amazon you often see what looks like the exact same product under different names. But in this case, it really pays to review the instruments and wiring in the photos of before you buy. Good thing they're cheap!

    I think the gauges blend into the overall look of the bike just fine, without standing out too much. (a good thing IMHO; I prefer an understated style of parts, for the most part) A fine mix of new and old. It's lit when i turn on one side not the other side.
      My indicator is a 2 way arrow green lamp meaning that it should light up when I signal to left or right if the wiring is done correct.
      I tested to wire it to the right side and it works only on right side not when i signal to left, I tested even the left side and it only works on left side not when i signal to right.
      The problem is that I can only make the indicator on the dash to light up on one side not the other.
      Question: How can I wire the 2 arrow indicator lamp on the dash to work when I signal left or right.

    I have the identical tachometer, trying to install on an '86 TRX200SX. It's on a single cylinder Honda 200cc engine. I have 3 wires (beside the 2 backlight wires which I already understand), according to the seller I have a "negative electrode, positive electrode, and signal wire" Do you know how these would wire up? My coil has ground then a second wire, where would my signal wire tap into? Do the negative and positive electrode just hook into a 12v source (such as the ignition switch) to turn the tach itself on? Don't want to burn up my tach, thanks!

      @Mike_Barker  3 роки тому

      So yes... But no at the same time. You are right that in theory everything could ground through the exact same point. However, two things:
      1) I was wiring this to be plug and play with the factory harness
      2) sometimes having everything ground to a common point, can mean you end up with electrical weirdness. That's why the electrical engineers design multiple grounds in the the wiring systems of motorcycles and cars.

    • @Mike_Barker
      @Mike_Barker  5 років тому

      Okay. At the 1:49 mark in the video you can briefly see what all 3 ground wires do. They are:
      #1- gauge illumination ground
      #2- neutral indicator ground
      #3- turn signals and high beam ground
      It sounds like you have #2 and #3 backwards. Swap them and I bet they will work!
      To find out which one was the ground for which lights, I simply tested the gauges by touching the wires to a battery.
