Saw Jimmy a few times at Blues Alley in DC. Particularly memorable one with Kenny Burrell, who was my first jazz ‘concert’ at a house party (in NE DC) when I was 12yo. IMHO, Jimmy had no equal. Never seen another Hammond player with the foot keys. That was cool to watch as is this most awesome performance. Love that Mark Whitfield on guitar sweatin’ it out hard and heavy.
December 12, 1965, Jimmy Smith’s Trio performed at Dotson’s Lounge, 10-minutes outside of Baltimore, Maryland. I was 14- years old singing with a quartet. We were given the opportunity to sing a cappella version of James Brown’s I FEEL GOOG.” Mr. Smith and his musicians jump on stage and kicked with us. I was grown man before I realized who he was … one of world’s Jazz organist in the world. Man!
Wow! What nobody seems to be saying here is - the video, and especially the audio quality is superb! The only negative I have to say is the ads placed unfortunately in the tunes. Now of course I have to subscribe to UA-cam Premium.

In those days Hargrove was a surprise guest in several concerts at the NSJF. This here concert took place on July 16th 1995 in the Jan Steen Zaal.
I’m the former Executive Assistant to James Brown. We were passing through Phoenix Arizona and playing the Celebrity Theatre. Two shows the same night. I always have someone knowledgeable about the business and those individuals who mean a lot to Mr. Brown, and who have helped him in the early days before he became “James Brown”, This must have been around 2003 (?) And our door monitor said something about a guy that “Was a Star” ! Demanding to have 5 timed minutes (After that I’ll leave!) With Mr. Brown. “ find out what he calls himself”! Mr. Brown yelled out as he was having the final touches put on his hair and make up. “He says his name is Jimmy Smith and he is an organ player” James stopped in his tracks and said “ describe what he looks like and how he dressed” James still wasn’t satisfied, so he open the door and myself and him and a Phoenix police officer on private duty, went out to where the limousine was backed in, down the ramp. Mr. Brown turned to us and motion not to go any further, and then he did a routine with his hands, which means “stretch or give me some extra time” normally, that was when a ballad was going on, and he wasn’t quite ready to give up. I watched him go over to this guy who was in a wheelchair by the way, and he told the man who was pushing him to come on down, and the security guards would help lift the wheelchair down into the green room. From the green room, there is a ramp that you walk directly out to the revolving stage. They enter the dressing room and Charles Bobbit our road manager, got on the intercom to tell Maceo Parker to stretch the intro and delay the opening of the curtains by five minutes. The next time I saw brown, he was standing by the Stage ramp resplendent in a costume that must’ve cost $20,000 or more. He waved me over and introduced me to Jimmy “the organ grinder” Smith. I already knew Mr. Smith From Universal attractions in New York, as well as the many times, we shared the bill at the Apollo. James walked onto the stage like he owned the building and of course everyone was on their feet, and he got into his act. Mr. Smith was on the ramp, but not on the stage. He was enjoying the concert from the best seat in the house toward the end of the show, he ran over to Mr. Smith and whispered something to him. And Mr. Smith vehemently shook his head and said no, no, no! I was in the dressing room when brown came running and covered in sweat, and we had his orange juice and we had his buckets of ice water for his feet ready. James stayed in touch with him, but we were in the middle of a very hot streak of one nighters so much. In fact, we have a double aircrew. One would fly commercial to catch up with us while the other one would rotate to stay legal. So Universal lost a fortune on him probably close to $70,000. I don’t think Jimmy lasted much longer after that he was just very frustrated and Tired! One thing about James Brown if you did the slightest favor for him when he was struggling, he would have repaid you for the rest of your natural life! Jimmy had fallen on very hard times! He had suffered a mild stroke, but could still play decently. He was living in a small apartment in Central Phoenix James talked with him for a while outside before we left and handed Jimmy’.a few thousand dollars and told him If he was interested in having his career reinvigorated that James would help him with that and he planned on calling our booking agent, Jack Bart at universal attractions later that night, when they arrived in Las Vegas on the Learjet. The downside of the story is universal sent one of their agents out to Phoenix, he assessed Jimmy and his ability and his willingness to go back on the road and commit himself to a three week European tour of jazz clubs. I don’t like to speak ill of people who are no longer with us, but from what I gather the entire tour was a disaster. Mr. Smith was uncooperative unmotivated and unwilling to do anything out of his comfort zone. The clothes in his possession and use studio apartment. We’re all Goodwill, close and universal attractions how to go out and reinvent the image of Jimmy Smith, and get him a wardrobe worthy of a legend. You have to remember in the 1960s and 70 Jimmy Smith was the biggest single attraction with the Hammond B3. In the entire world! He knew how to play he just didn’t have an instrument so one was released so he could practice alongside a coach to help him overcompensate for the loss of left side dexterity
Mark's on fire... He's sweating all over. Nowadays jazz musicians don't really have to put ties and wear suits, so the body and muscles are more relaxed and can get more air circulation.

yes, they are all masters of their instruments BUT Mark set the tone for the style: faster and faster. I have never heard Jimmy play a hole show with so many runs. He to me is known as the master on the organ for rhythm. I am much more a fan of melodies and purposeful playing. The problem with these fast runs is: you run out of something to say so quickly and start repeating yourself.
this is a tough one man. In a way I agree that Mark sometimes gets carried away, but that is his style. That attack, that enthusiasm and going for it, especially as a young player here are forgivable. Some good moments, some over playing, some moving passages. That's improvised music.

LARRY YOUNG was more advanced in harmonies than Smith, more adept, more daring - "The Trane of B3" 2) almost all B3ists did the bass pedal work

Mark Whitfield has some really nice licks. However I felt he forgot he was playing with a band and go lost in his own little speed bubble.
Duh #1 its Jazz...completely appropriate. #2 JS hired him specifically because he plays like that. Its not a blues band
