Burying the plastic on the edges saved our sanity! No more plastic held down by bricks blowing everywhere because of the wind. Thank you!!!
Thats a lot of hard ass work.
Thank you for the post brother
Last year, 2018, I pushed the plastic in with a spade - This year, I'll make slightly raised beds with the 2 wheel tractor as you have done and just bury the edges - much better - many thanks
Great video! My stink bug solution is a plastic container with Olive oil. They climb in and drown.
Damn man! Your a hard worker!
Great video. Thanks for sharing !
I feel you brother. I just did 12 rows 80 feet long.
hey - before it's too late for this year, i would suggest you look into importing some manure for your field. you've still got enough time now (if you're beginning planting in mid april) to let it get in there pretty good. if you have a loader on your tractor it can be spread pretty easy.
i say this because your soil looks so sandy i'm wondering how much success you have growing anything - giving yourself a nice 4-6" top layer of nice soil will probably double your yield compared to what you have now.
and once you spread it, as long as the ground isn't frozen, break out grandpa's old mouldboard plow and flip over the whole field and let it sit - the earlier the better. it isn't going to damage your soil ecology very much, in fact, it will enhance it to such a large degree because you're adding so much more microbiology and organic matter to it. plowing it will bury it and help to mix everything together. it helps also if you had any sort of cover crop over the winter to add to that - even if it is just grass!
horse manure tends to work better than cow manure, but it's more difficult to get in such a large quantity. ideally, at this point, since you only have a few months for it to be soil, try to get something that is well rotted and has been sitting for a few years. where i am, i'm friends with people who board a few horses and i could have it delivered for free, i guess they have a hard time getting rid of it - you might have the same situation where you are, and even if they want a small fee, it'll be well worth it.
horse manure is a bit hotter in the nitrogen area so it tends to snuff out weeds, too, and the nitrogen can produce some monster plants. my grandmother swore by it in her flower and vegetable gardens, she hardly ever had to weed! and she'd plant 50 pounds of potatoes every year and end up with 2,000 pounds at the end of the year off of, i dunno, 1000 square feet. the stuff really works.
don't be afraid of tillage either - we've been doing it for two millenia, and it can be a vital thing to do to help decompose what's out there.
Good job on sharing the info, but video could have been about half as long by prepping better. I appreciate the great information. I'm gonna try it on my veggie garden.
Mate....subbed. Been at this shit nearly 6 years now in Ireland. I'm interested to see what happens.
Wow you guys have sandy soil lol If you haven't already heard of Jean Martien Fortier and his book the market gardener I just thought Id recommend it :)
Does this attract rats/pests who live under the black plastic?
I have both a Rain-Flo flatbed and also a 2550 raised bed plastic layer machine. Im in Pennsylvania, where are you? ?I could sell my flat layer reasonably. 'I hardly used it.

how did everything work out with the plastic including harvest and bugs
You should look for volunteers because that looks like a whole lot for work for you. Offer a free class lesson for the volunteers. lol
What is your opinion on using woven landscape fabric to grow watermelon, melon, squash, cucumber etc.
That would work great just made sure you secure it to the ground with stakes.
I have found that the problem with the woven landscape fabric is that when a weed seed (that have fallen on top of the fabric) take root through the weaves, the weeds are very difficult to remove. Thus, I stay away from the woven landscape fabric and only use the black plastic. But I am not an expert, only through experience.
how about rubber roofing is it safe
Approx how much heat does the plastic insulate the soil?
How do you plant without breaking the dripline?
+Dolly Perry Once I start planting and staking I always make note of where the drip line is so I don't hit it.
Also. How long can you use the plastic after one. growing season.
You should only use it for that season, then pull it out.
The plastic has a 4 year life before needing to be replaced and the landscape fabric will work good for a while but it will break down. You should be able to get through to the end of the season but don't count on it lasting for years.
get some chickens for those stink buggs
