If you ask me, the song is about a guy who sees his once free and happy life turned into the chores or marriage, suddenly bound by the 'responsibilities' he has taken on, which will emasculate him in the end (him 'doing his pretty face'). He is 'Desmond' no more, and has turned into 'Mr. Desmond and Molly Jones'. The lady has taken the quality that made him proud in the first place. She's become the 'singer in the band'. Believe me, I still like the song - but it has turned into a different, bittersweet meaning for me now.
