Thanks for writing, I like to see these stories get coverage. It seems implausible how badly people can be manipulated, but it’s usually good people that get taken advantage of by terrible people. I have family in a controlling religious group, and while it’s not a scary one, to see the extent they are manipulated, as was I, it’s frightening to know what could happen if someone there took advantage of them. Remember folks, all that a calm controlling religious group needs to do terrible things, is to believe it’s for the greater good.
The only criticism I have, my friend, is that humans are bat s#!t crazy. This was a well-written script, although I'm glad Simon decided to skip part of it.
Well done script as always, & I hope that Sabine got away & was able to live a fulfilling adult life devoid of more trauma. I presume Harald died long ago (possibly at the hand of his son) & that Frank either died at some point between then & now, or he's been off hiding in seclusion in the countryside for 30+ years; the odds of staying on the lam for more than just a few years max is a foreign concept to me. It's extraordinary that 2 deranged individuals not only managed to escape asylum & hide, but they've *never* been seen or heard from since. The act of disappearing is fascinating to me
Hey I listened to this one like 12 hours ago on podcast form. I remember thinking "I wonder what kind of hat he's wearing?" Turns out it was a beanie. What a rollercoaster of emotion on my end. But in all seriousness, thanks for skipping the gory details. Noone needs to hear that.
Thank you for not going into the dark details. You can see Simon goes over and reads what's said and just goes. "Nope, you don't need to know" and no, we don't and thank you for not going into insane detail.
Yes, I very much appreciate both Matt for researching the detail, and Simon for deciding that's not what his channel is about. I know Jen (if she edited this one) also appreciates not knowing the specifics of what was done--it was starting to wear on her. This discretion is why I listen to Simon. I studied as a forensic anthropologist and usually hate True Crime that focuses on either the murderer, or the gore of the crimes. Simon's channel only involves as much as either as necessary, and tries to focus on the victim where possible. I was only disappointed that we didn't know more about who the mother, Dagmar, was before her life got entangled with Harold, and if we ever knew anything about her own mental health. But given the family's isolation and the sparse information Matt was dealing with, it is unlikely those details were ever known in her life, much less after her death. Tragic all around.
@@Hyde_HillIt’s hard to tell with Berkowitz, he keeps changing his story depending on the person and what amuses him that day. Last I checked he was trying to convince people that he was actually part of a devil worshiping group of powerful people who were also involved with killing people and the rest moved their operations to another town when he was arrested. You can’t trust a thing he says, he enjoys making shit up to mess with people.
Thank you Simon, for not sharing the gruesome details of the crime. You're very right in saying that's not necessary and not what this channel is about 👍 We can picture it without the gritty details. Also, just a shout out to Jen for the editing. Loved the dogs in the background part. You are always so bang on with your contributions, keep up the outstanding work 💯💥 👋 from Canada eh
I gasped aloud when Simon said he'd never heard Carlin. 7 Words You Cannot Say on Television is so good. His later stuff about prison is eye opening. Even his political interviews are fascinating listens!
💯 especially the clip about politicians all being apart of the same college, university, etc and we the lower/middle class aren’t allowed in or even near them. How true that is. The Rich get richer and the poor get taxed to death and the rich do not care one bit. They could solve out hunger, our homelessness, but they would rather give BILLIONS to Ukraine. I don’t want them to suffer however we have some serious problems at home. 💜
They weren't using that money for those things before. The money is coming out of our Defense budget. More than half of it is actually remaining in the U.S anyway because they basically took guns, ammunition, etc that we already had (much of it we weren't using and probably would have replaced anyway) and the money is replacing those items probably with the newest weapons that are being made. The U.S defense budget has typically been pretty high and unfortunately the budget meant to actually help people in the way you described tends to be low. There are also global political reasons why we are helping Ukraine. Simon actually did a video or two on it on Warographics
Carlin did say on the topic tho(might be somewhat paraphrased) : "think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that!"
But have you tried it? It’s actually pretty good, although you need to use the right kind of beans and the quality of the bread is important. And don’t skimp on the butter. A full English breakfast is one of life’s great joys. Having said that, it’s definitely not the only good way to do breakfast, and the inclusion of fresh fruits and vegetables, aside from being delicious, is obviously important for one’s health. It’s sad that Simon’s idea of breakfast is so limited. British “cuisine” has actually been branching out to include more color in recent years, so I don’t think being an Englishman is the excuse it once was.
@nuthinmuffins5073 I admire Brit culture a lot, so yes I tried beans on toast. I can totally see your point on it needs good bread and good beans. I will keep my good beans on one side of my plate and my good toast on another.
@@johnoglesby-vw7cki need to refresh my memory but someone said you can say all but 1 now lol. Damn I miss him and Mitch so bad. @@standdownrobots_ihaveoldglory at the same time I'm sort of glad that Carlin was spared having to see the shit show the world has turned into lately. Granted he said he had disconnected from any emotional investment pertaining to the human race and it's survival but I don't think that's possible, not completely.. But yea his input on today would have been interesting. Another one who belongs up there at the top and who like Mitch died far too young was Bill Hicks..
I'm pretty sure Simon was talking about the last Spanish Habsburg during that incest rant. And, yes, Charles II of Spain looks exactly what you'd imagine generations of inbreeding does to a person.
The royal houses of Europe were way to closely related by that point. And it's not just one but the Habsburg chin can be found on several paintings of (Habsburg) nobles at the time. This was very visible with the Habsburg chin but it also led to other hereditary diseases that were passed along the royal houses of Europe.
Thanks for covering this case! I suggested it to you on Twitter, as there isn't a lot of media on this case. I first heard of the Alexanders in a book about strange deaths.
I don't know why I'd never heard of this case before. Crazed religious cult killings are the category of true crime that I find most fascinating... probably because, being raised without religion by non-religious parents, I've always been interested in the psychology of religion.
it's funny as a religious person that was raised by religious parents i find the scientific ones to be interesting. I also find science to be interesting in general so yea, opposite minds can think alike.
Simon always errs on the side of CSI over Saw. I kinda get the vibe that the writer gets docked a couple basement points whenever Simon skips a particularly noisome part. "Yeah yeah yeah, and it lasted 3 hours..."
I’m 1:30 in and this script is already reminding me of this meme I read once, that was literally just “all religious wars are, are grown ups fighting over whose imaginary friend is better” 😂
6:07 I'm pretty sure the saying is closer to "If you talk to God, that's okay. If God talks to you, that's not okay." I'm available for proofreading/editing!
Hell yeah, another Mr. Ballen fan! I thought this case sounded familiar, but Matt did a wonderful job of covering it. I always say that I don't mind hearing the same story from multiple people, as each person in their research will likely find things that others didn't, or chose to omit things that others covered.
5:50 - Chapter 1 - The lorber society 11:10 - Chapter 2 - My son, the messiah 22:10 - Chapter 3 - The hour is at hand 27:30 - Chapter 4 - Without a trace 31:50 - Wrap up PS: Simon is so "aerodynamic" that he need protection for the high altitudes
I know these have been suggested before, but I haven't seen them yet, so here they are again: - The Emmett Till tragedy - Lorena and John Bobbitt (I want so see Simon cringe) - Huey P. Long Assassination (this one might be better suited to Decoding the Unknown, since there is controversy/conspiracies surrounding it) Thanks, and keep up the great work! This is definitely one of my favorite youtube channels :)
Fun fact, my husband and I once won a Halloween costume contest dressed as John and Lorena. I carried around a kielbasa in a clear jar and for some reason none of the men felt comfortable around me all night!
Really great episode 👍 as always you guys told a horrific and very sad story with care and respect. Mr. Ballen is a great story teller. If anyone hasn't watched his channel give it try. He is also a very respectful person that brings us events from the Strange, Dark and Mysterious, that leaves you on the edge of your seat. Thank you CC team!! It's never a bad day when a new vid posts ☺ ✌
So happy to see a new video! I was a starting to get worried after a week that something happened to you or the channel! Been listening to too much cas crim, getting paranoid haha. Keep up the amazing work everyone, you guys really made my night
I once read an old German news article that was archived somewhere at 3 am in a bout of insomnia. I thought it was a nightmare. Glad for my brain that it wasn't.
@fabwolves6461 it didn't used to always be so hot in freaking FEBRUARY. This is the first year I can remember where the temperatures have gotten this high this early in the year. And people still deny climate change 😐
Thank you Simon for sparing us the gruesome details and not letting this turn into nurder corn. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates it. And thank you for another interesting video
I said out loud to no one: "Simon, are you living in a lighthouse?" Tell me he doesn't look like he could be thrown into that movie next to Dafoe and Pattinson!
Re 10:22 The vast majority of Christian denominations believe God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three persons in one Godhead, including Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and most protestants. Of the groups you've likely heard of, only the Jehovah's Witnesses completely disavow the Trinity (Mormons are a.... separate case... one which I'm not well-read enough on LDS theology to speak on with any authority).
I can’t figure out whether the hat is more funny or the fact that Simon spent years in “Christian” school and is so unclear about literally anything to do with it.
It bothers me in movies when the evil cult is satanic or whatever when in reality, most cults that have been the source of tragedies are usually aligned with christianity, or at least mainstream religions
While I absolutely believe that the two murders are dead, I don't know if I believe that they'd have managed to get to the final sister...I imagine they'd have her institutionalized far away to prevent her from trying to free them, and it'd be hard for the men to find her. Still a chilling idea though!
I'm not sure how many months it's been since I discovered Casual Criminalist, but today was finally the day I caught up! I have now listened to all the Casual Criminalist videos. I love them all. As an American, I love hearing about cases whose coverage didn't make it to the States. I wanted to give the wonderful writers some ideas for future episodes. The list is long and Simon may have covered some of these on his other channels (if so, I apologize!). Some are well-known and often covered, but I would love to hear Simon and his writers' opinions on them. Some may be better suited for Simon's other channels as well. I think yall really should cover Gordon Cummins-the blackout ripper very interesting case and investigation would make a great script considering he was an active serial killer during air raid bombings in world war 2
I would not have looked at the screen if it weren’t for Simon commenting on his hat. I’m so glad I saw the folded over sweater-like cream white knit beanie. Good and practical, by virtue of being a beanie. Glad it wasn’t an (American perception of) “British newspaper boy” style hat or a fedora. Kudos to Simon and Matt, as per usual!!!
this is a complicated case and i absolutely see why it took so long to figure out. i would like a little more information about Frank, like did he go to public school or was he ever around 'normal' non-cult people? did he ever have examples in his life that showed him anything different than he was raised to believe? it begs the question of "if you don't understand that what you did was wrong, how can you be held accountable?" if a child is raised this way, how is he at fault for acting in a way he fully believes to be right? i can definitely see how the court system had difficulty figuring out how to deal with this entire mess.
Yeah, I'm really conflicted on the question whether you could call him "guilty". Sure he should be locked up, but if he was told his whole life that killing his family was right up to the point where his victims were approving of being killed the moment he did it, how could he ever have known it was wrong? How could he ever develop the same moral understanding the rest of the world operates by?
yeah i felt like at parts this script was too harsh on frank and his father. like yeah they did things that the rest of us think are horrific, but their views on it were obviously the exact opposite of ours. they believed in an afterlife and it.. doesn't seem like they viewed death as a big deal. none of the people killed seemed to suffer. if you look at it from franks pov, killing them was an act of love and care. every single person in this story just sounds like a victim of the cult. and it's like.. really difficult to decide if people like this are completely beyond saving, cause if they could be rehabilitated then it's just not right to lock them up for the rest of their lives for doing something they didn't understand was wrong
“This beanie that I’m wearing on my big brained bald head is sponsored by Keeps, the only hair loss supplement that will keep you from wearing this hideous thing on my head”
I agree it seems highly unlikely that anyone as unhinged as these two could have gone long undetected outside the mental institution. I think it's more likely that they were done in by someone, likely because they seemed threatening with their craziness. Going on the run necessitates interacting with the criminal underworld where they could have seemed too erratic to be trusted. Even the criminal underworld has rules.

These writers gotta learn that when Sinon says "think CSI, not SAW," he means it. There are other ways to traumatize Whistle-boy; just ask Kevin! He wrote the Pedro Lopez and Oakland Cty Child Killer episodes! _This is why Simon sometimes lets Kevin out of the basement!_
I don't know Albert Fish was very intense and brutal, worse than Lopez
9 місяців тому+2
@@AdamOBrien29 hey, all I know is which ones Simon says have disturbed him extra hard. I think the fact that Lopez is _technically_ still considered a fugitive, but his whereabouts have been unknown for years, while Albert Fish was executed almost a century ago, is why Lopez still gets refered to in Simon's asides as a case that really unsettled him. He's often admitted that the older cases (seems about WWII-era or older), even the especially brutal ones, just sit differently than more recent ones. Lopez was apprehended the first time in 1980; Simon was born in 1988, and there's a chance even if slight, that Lopez may still be alive, as Wikipedia says he was born in 1948. So yeah, the closer proximity in time to his own, the bigger the effect a case may have on Simon.
Charles the II of Spain had such a severe Hapsburg jaw from inbreeding he struggled to eat and speak. In addition to his Habsburg jaw, the king was short, weak, impotent, mentally handicapped, suffered numerous intestinal problems, and did not even speak until he was four years old. So....yeah.
I bought Carlin's comedy albums when l was a kid. Class clown was his 3rd or 4th release in the early 70s. Seven words you can't say on television was great. My mom heard me playing it in my room, took it back AND kept my money. Haven't thought about that in a long time and now l miss my mom. Damn
Horrific. As a spiritual person, this cult behavior is so manipulative and frightening. A real spiritual community of love shouldn't tell you how to think, or tell you have to behave. So manipulative and frightening.
The king with the underbite was Charles Habsburg or Charles II. His family had married their first cousins for at least 4 generations before him. He couldn't make kids and had lots of other troubles too.

“Never talk to cops!”, which was told to me by a retired cop. His advice was aways ask for a lawyer, no matter what! You can always go from Not Guilty to Guilty, immediately, if you want. Not so easy to go from Guilty to Not Guilty. You always have the opportunity to tell your story at any time, showing remorse. When the Interrogator’s claim to want to help you, they are lying. They have many specific techniques to manipulate you. They can legally lie to you all they want. Their only goal is to close the case. They are not your friends. They will tell you that talking to them is the only way you can show you’re not a monster, or show remorse, acting like this will be your only time to explain your side. That is a lie in itself. Talk to a lawyer anytime they want to talk to you. Get up and leave, when they say you can. Them saying you must have something to hide or it makes you look guilty, if you obtain one. This is not true. Many times, polygraphs read false positives that say you’re lying, which is why they’re not admissible in court. You have the right to a lawyer. Use it. If you’re arrested, you may request one when you’re booked into the jail, and talked to the judge, so you’ll have to stay at least one night in jail, but it’s just best to talk consult with a lawyer, so you fully understand your rights. Especially, if you’re innocent. There is a list of specific techniques, called the “Reid” technique, which is used to totally manipulate you to confess, whether guilty or not. They will say, they have enough evidence to convict “right now”. That probably is a lie right there. It’s because they need more evidence, or to strengthen the case. Just remember, their goal is to close the case, and that’s all.
In USA yes. In other countries like UK you have far more rights and police can't lie. But still get a lawyer. But not all police are bad and just want to close the case, most want to catch the person responsible, the problem is some will manipulate evidence because they think it is you.
It's the literal opposite. If youre talking to god, that's a normal experience within religion. But if he starts talking back to you, that's when you have a problem.
Yesssss! I've heard a little bit about the case. I'm very glad to see this! Who likes organ music?! Bad joke, but that's how some of us handle hearing about this shit 😆

"Any random dog off the street could be the messiah"? Don't tell David Berkowitz.
Pretty sure he later admitted he had made the whole dog thing up.
Sounds like trump. At least the far right believe he's some kind of messiah. I'd describe him as more of a coyote than dog though

"'In the unlikely event of a sudden change in cabin pressure-' ROOF FLIES OFF!"
Also George Carlin..."You can't fix stupid!" 🤣
Ron White although I would not doubt Carlin said it as well. He certainly knew it to be true.
Even the Jewish scholars & the vactican accept atleast half of everyone who has been killed, was by religion. Even the blind must accept the truth!
Thats Ron White. Carlin had a darker, sociopolitical style of comedy.
Carlin did say on the topic tho(might be somewhat paraphrased) : "think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that!"

Simon, from a people who eat beans on toast, you have no room to talk about vegetables for breakfast.
Literally eating veg for breakfast!
Are legumes a vegetable, or a separate category all their own? Debate at 5.

10:42 "A random dog off the street could be the messiah."
He's not the messiah. He's a very good boy!
If God talks to you, that's not okay."
I'm available for proofreading/editing!
Hell yeah, another Mr. Ballen fan! I thought this case sounded familiar, but Matt did a wonderful job of covering it. I always say that I don't mind hearing the same story from multiple people, as each person in their research will likely find things that others didn't, or chose to omit things that others covered.
Yeah, or have different viewpoints or observations from each other that could contribute to the whole story
Thank you for withholding the gruesome details.

I know these have been suggested before, but I haven't seen them yet, so here they are again:
- The Emmett Till tragedy
- Lorena and John Bobbitt (I want so see Simon cringe)
- Huey P. Long Assassination (this one might be better suited to Decoding the Unknown, since there is controversy/conspiracies surrounding it)

Re 10:22
The vast majority of Christian denominations believe God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three persons in one Godhead, including Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and most protestants.
The monarch you were thinking of was Spanish King Charles II.
Aka, Carlos II (really).
Simon looks like he's about to show off 5 minute crafts
I'm not sure how many months it's been since I discovered Casual Criminalist, but today was finally the day I caught up! I have now listened to all the Casual Criminalist videos. I love them all.
Thank you Matt! Thank you Simon's Hat!

What?!? You haven’t watched a George Carlin set?!? Get on that immediately. Carlin was hilarious and also an amazingly intelligent person
