I was watching this episode with my brother and we laughed like, "Haha, what if that was Shadow?" then we got all serious and realized that 1974 was exactly fifty years ago.

Year 1974 + 50 years = 2024.
So Knuckles technically takes place in 2024. Neat. Makes me wonder what years the other two movies took place.
sonic 2 takes place 8 months after the first movie apparently
Knuckles is probably around 3-4 months after S2 so probably a year after S1

My theory is that Maria sent shadow down to earth and his pod crashed into a bowling tournament. And since GUN has been tracking him down, They captured him during the bowling tournament. And since GUN has been around for a long time it kinda makes since how he’s in some trapped laboratory.
Well thought out theory. I'll come back to this if this is revealed in Sonic 3.
That's a neat theory. Although, I do want to point out something, apparently around that time(1974) GUN wasn't even a thing until it was formed after the events of San Francisco(Sonic Movie 1) about years later.

I immediately knew that 1974 had to do something with Shadow The Hedgehog or Black Doom.

This actually makes way more sense than it being BD, and it would literally line up. Except I think the Sonic movies take place a little bit after 2024, because they said 'over 50 years ago', not exactly 50 years ago. So they might take place around 2026 or 2027. It would still line up though.

Whilst the whole 1974 reference makes it pretty obvious that they are talking about Shadow, it is a weird way of referring to him.
First of all, I guess you could say that Shadow isn’t an extra terrestrial in the way that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are, since he was created by a human being and indeed brought up in a family and colony of human beings on a space colony that orbited the Earth.
Secondly, no red is not his dominant colour, but after that, you have his red stripes/highlights, the red base of his shoes, his red eyes etc. so the colour is obviously still a pretty important part of his appearance. Incidentally I can’t help but notice how often people in my life who aren’t Sonic fans mistake Knuckles for Shadow and vice versa.
Lastly, it’s one thing the strange nature of him being at a bowling tournament after all the trauma he goes through on the ARK, but isn’t he meant to be hibernated in that capsule for 50 years as of when Maria puts him in it on the ARK, and then not experience Earth until he wakes up after it? Unless they just happened to be passing the bowling scene with Shadow in the capsule or something…
I suppose all may be explained in December if at all… 🦔

He's not the clone of Sonic. Project Shadow was designed to make the ultimate lifeform to find a way to cure Maria from an incurable disease. Just happened to be that him and Sonic are very similar

The rejected design for Shadow looks closer to Sonic and was named Terios. If I recall correctly the plot for SA2 was made first and then Shadow's design.
It's just a coincidence that Shadow looks like a lot like Sonic
it just so happens that The Ultimate Lifeform is in the shape of a humanoid hedgehog. That is the peak of evolution.
This series was good but focused to much on Wade imo overall a 5.5/10
