Tim is like your jovial uncle at the BBQ who always offers you a beer and asks if you've heard any good stories lately, upon which he launches into his own.
His playing is far beyond anything I'll achieve, but I can watch him just for the sheer enjoyment of seeing someone do something they love. Thanks Tim. You're the best.

I just did a gig for the first time in months and we played Crossroads, it was the first solo I learned from Tim. Several people asked me how I nailed the guitar, I lied and told them it was glorious results of a misspent youth, but the TRUTH? Tim Pierce is the man. If you ever get to Ireland Tim let me know, I can give you and the wife and "insiders" tour. Im originally from San Francisco but after 17 years here Im qualified! Thanks for the amazing lessons. Im too poor for the Masterclass but it is on my Christmas list for this year.

This fingering "trick" is a traditional strategy used on the ancient Indian instruments, Vina and Sitar, where they shift up on the 2nd finger and down on the 1st finger, and the melodic playing takes place on a single string. Beautiful and inspiring application of the technique by Tim, as always. Thanks

What beautiful & tasteful phrasing. Your insight into guitar is pure gold.

  • @TomCPlus1
    @TomCPlus1 4 роки тому +1

I checked this out in the MasterClass as well . . . it's golden. Not only does this technique help me use more of the fretboard and the high and lower registers -- it sounds more like I'm playing the chord tones at the right times (no more "running up and down one pentatonic position") because I can stop the slide in a place that my ear tells me is right. That's the best thing about this method, in my view!

Such a simple concept, and it’s changed how I will forever look at the guitar. I wish I saw this 3 years ago, thank you! I have struggled with connecting all of the scales, and I can’t believe it was such a simple concept that I was missing. I always wondered how the pros connect everything so effortlessly, and this really demonstrates that. Thank you!!!

The music you have played on is everything I've always loved lol. Maybe it's because of you?! Bon Jovi to Slipknot John Waite and more. Everything tasty and melodic and your tone is delicious. Thank you for everything you do. I don't have much to say that you haven't heard a thousand times so I will just leave it at thank you. Thank you for your fun personality You're amazing guitar playing and the imprint you've left on the musical fabric of my life. I know we don't know each other but I want to say "buddy" lol. Kia ora Tim from Aotearoa (New Zealand), you are one of my two favourite people on UA-cam. I really enjoy watching your instructional video's because you cut straight to the chase and talk in a language that we all understand. Unfortunately, when I was growing up, there wasn't much call for professional musicians where I lived, so I have had to worked all my life and didn't have time to learn music theory. So when other great musicians do instructional work I tend to get lost when they are talking theory, (my fault I suppose)but you talk simple music language and you are having a great time while doing it. You are awesome, just like Pete Thorn, who is my other favourite person. Keep doing what you do for the sake of guitarist like myself, kia ora.

@Tim Pierce Guitar - You are a musical treasure! The knowledge of guitar theory and tones packed in with your years as a studio musician is second to none! I've been playing for almost 20 years and have considered myself an intermediate player for a long time, but watching your videos for the past 3-4 years has really upped my ability to apply tons of concepts in practical situations. This video is definitely high up on there on my favorites. Thank you for everything you do! - from a grateful guitarist in Connecticut.

After playing guitar for 40 years without the internet, I finally learned what it was that I figured out on my own, i.e. the minor pentatonic scale. One of the things that I figured out was how to move up and down the neck. I had no idea what I was doing, mind you, but I knew it sounded cool.
When I finally discovered the minor pentatonic scale, and finding out there were different "boxes" to learn, my first thought was how do I connect the boxes, i.e. move up and down the neck.
Tim's concept is great but it does require you to know scale patterns for wherever it is you decide to stop. At the same time however, you don't need to know them all. You could play all 5 boxes of the minor pentatonic using Tim's concept. You just need to know which box you're stopping in and then just continue from there.
Granted, knowing the modes and arpeggios make for the most melodic solos, but you can still sound melodic if all you knew were the 5 boxes of the minor pentatonic scale and you employed this concept of connecting the boxes together. That's how valuable this way of thinking is when approaching lead guitar.

TPG,Thank you for all your great tips. I grew up with a friend who played bouzouki in a Greek band. He opened me up to playing melody on one string. Thanks, Manny, wherever you are. Another thing about guitar. There two groups of players that I've noticed over the years. First group, the left hand moved alot and not much music came out. The second group,The left hand didn't move much and all kinds of music came out. I would call that "Economics Of Motion." I strive to be in the second group. I play in three different local blues bands. Playing blues,I've come up with a "Theory Of Melodic Freedom In A 12 Bar Blues Context". O.K., I didn't invent anything. I stole it from my heros and my heros heros. They all combine major and minor pentatonic, add the flat 5 note and the myxolydian mode.If you add that all up,you got 9 out of 12 notes. the only three notes not in there are major 7, flat 2 [one above the root, one below the root, easy enough to remember] and flat 6.you can use those for passing tones. I've been using the major 7 into the one. It works for me. Everybody has the same 12 notes. Anything goes or as Miles Davis said "There are no wrong notes." I think someone else said "No wrong notes, just poor resolutions. One more quote"Down Home Blues, Every Other Record Or Two" Z.Z. Hill

Fantastic and we must acknowledge that this is a very Dickey Betts style of getting around the guitar. Thanks for illuminating the concept so well!

Dang Tim! You are an awesome hummin’ bean! You are so blessed and make me feel blessed to be able to see and hear you!!
I recently put together a sentence that helps me remember the names of the modes in order!
“I, Do, Prefer, Lydia, Mix, Ales, Locally”
Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aolian, Locrian
It helps me remember the names but I can’t play the damned modes! LOL!

That B&G sounded phenomenal. It had an acoustic quality behind the blues electric tone that blended in perfectly.

I really like how you also incorporate double stops to make the leads so much fuller.
