Actually, Zelensky's main mandate was to make ammends with Russia. He started deplomatic talks with Russia as well. US later threatened Zelensky (using Azov NAZIs) and foiled the talk altogether. That's how the war started.

France actually made it further into Russia than Germany did, sort of. Napoleon's army seized control of Moscow, at great cost. Problem was, the Russians burned Moscow to the ground and it went badly downhill for the French really fast. The comparisons to the Cold War are apt. the USSR and the US were overtly opposed to each other, yet they were still able to talk things out in order to avoid full scale war. They knew what a war between the West and Eastern Block would look like and they wanted to avoid it. The leaders in the West seem to have forgotten, are indifferent to, or perhaps even eager about, any consequences they accrue with Russia.

I have always taken Macron's talk about sending troops to fight in Ukraine as grandstanding and a bluff. It serves the political purpose of making France look like the "leader" in Europe, but may also be intended as a deterrent to Moscow exploiting its tactical advantages in eastern Ukraine. As a deterrent I do not think it will have much effect. More significant are the rather secretive activities around long range weapons like storm shadow, ATACMS etc., if NATO targeting or personnel are involved in their use on the Russian homeland. So far such attacks, as far as I am aware, have been restricted to the Crimea and Ukrainian locations. To use them against targets deep in the Russian homeland would be a genuine cause for concern about escalation. From day one the Russians have made it clear that any NATO personnel deployed on Ukrainian soil were regarded as legitimate targets and would be hit. We have had a few shady reports about NATO personnel being injured or killed in Ukraine, but it is all shrouded in secrecy. The west likes to keep these things secret from their own public, who get no say in foreign [policy and whose opinions on how their leaders are endangering their security are not welcome, only the Russians and western leadership know what it really going on. The western public are kept ignorant with the aid of a most sycophantic press corps.

France, the US, Poland and other western countries are already heavily involved, on the ground, and above Ukraine. They are providing 'trainers' on the ground, to operate missile systems, which would otherwise take years to train on, particularly air defence missile systems. They are also providing engineering support for these weapons systems. US AWACS planes regularly direct missiles to target Russian ships. There is barely a Russian soldier that cannot move on the battlefield, without being tracked by US satellites. So the idea that the West is 'just providing weapons and ammo for Ukraine to defend itself' is fairly ridiculous.

My understanding was that Russia has not threatened targets in the UK or French HOMELANDs only military forces deployed abroad. If the British and French governments did not understand that attacking targets in Russia or sending troops to fight in Ukraine made them legitimate targets, then this just shows the lack of contact with reality which seems to pervade western leadership since the end of the Cold War, and in particular the dangerous influence of the Neo-cons, who have gone from fringe extremists during the Cold War to the norm now. Also I read the nuclear exercises not as a note that this will involve nukes but rather to remind everyone that nukes might be the end state. I.e. it is deterrence rather than a direct threat. Russia understands thst such escallations may lead to nuclear confrontation and is again reminding everyone else of this fact. France and the UK both have nukes. And so a war involving ghese has to be assumed to have the potential to go nuclear.
