Great to see someone explaining a radio they love, can't beat it! well done David! more content like this, would love to see David doing some HF gear like this.
David- it's a tremendous radio - I wrote the review and raved about this radio in Practical Wireless ( Nov 23) If it's any measure of how good it really is - I now have more than one. Its big secret is that it's a dual CODEC radio that can multifunction simultaneously . C4FM is available on both upper and lower displays. The Bluetooth performance is real quality . Richard G3UGF
Thanks for your review David, I have this radio for about probably 4 or 5 months now, I got from yourselves...I really like the audio quality, build quality and digital capability. I use with my HRI-200 or most often nowadays with a raspberry pi 4 hotspot to connect to "WIRES-X" or reflectors into popular USA rooms, such as KC Wide. It takes some time to get used to the menu in form of a list, scrolling up and down to find what you need, this is one little negative about it, the other negative is the fact that you cannot create memory banks like in the FT-5DE which has a very similar interface and screen layout, what that means is that you cannot for example create groups of 2m or 70cm frequencies like " local reapeters", " 2m Simplex FM frequencies", "2m Simplex DV frequencies", "2m South Reapeters", etc....and this is a quite annoying thing, because you have to twist the knob all the way up or down to however many channels you have recorded in your radio. So if you have lets say 300 x 2m channels and you need one in the middle, then you have to twist the knob till you get there, whereas if you had smaller memory banks, you could quickly change to that memory bank and find your channel with a few twists.....not sure if Yaesu would be able to fix this by a Firmware update, but since they have not done yet, I suspect there is a hardware limitation on the FTM-500. Overall it is a great radio, my 1st VHF/UHF radio as a foundation licensee...so far I am enjoying very much, and still would advise people to buy it if they are alright with some of those shortcomings. M7ILD, 73!
FTM-500 can support transmit operation on the top and bottom displayed frequencies. Example, on top a repeater frequency. On the bottom the APRS frequency. When the repeater is not transmitting, hence the top receiver is squelched, the bottom frequency will activate by itself and handshake on APRS.
I use one as my main radio in the house and it is the best dualband radio i have used. The display is fantastic as are all the functions especially on the digital side.
The only thing better than an FTM-500 is owning two of them. Perhaps one for the house and one for the car. Or, store one in an EMP resistant enclosure, use the other.
Got mine from yourselves a few weeks ago for the shack to accompany my FT-710, Loving the radio, Only thing I'm annoyed about is missing out on the cashback offer! 😂
I saw on another channel that the on-screen keyboard is not QWERTY as it is on many other radios including Yaesu models. Did Yaesu fix this in a firmware update for the FTM-500 ? Nice review. Thank you!
Cool all the vids say top "band" it's the top VFO or as some of us would say the top radio. I have one and due to house refurb.. it"s not been used yet. Thunderpole magmount and Diamind dual bander waiting to be deployed asap. 73
What’s the easiest way to programme it when moving from an FM only radio which I programmed with Chirp? Yaesu or external software. Thanks - David G0PBS
Chirp has been known to brick Yaesu so I use RT Systems for my FT-991A. I think the response from Yaesu is "too bad so sad" if that happens. Honestly I like chirp better, but it's not worth bricking an expensive Yaesu rig to save $25 on software. 73

I didn't realize Graham Norton was working for ML&S these days.
I thought that as well ❤

I miss the larger screen on the FTM-400.
I use one as my main radio in the house and it is the best dualband radio i have used. The display is fantastic as are all the functions especially on the digital side.
Excellent video! I really appreciate the details you touched on. Have a good weekend sir.

If it had SSB and satallite mode I'd have one like a shot, but it hasn't got either so not this time .which is a shame cause I do like the look of it.
Good review, my favorite feature of the 500 is not buying one and getting the 400 instead 😉
FTM300 ftw
in fact mine came from the very man himself, should have asked him to sign it now that he is a UA-cam star!
Lol thats priceless
Wish they still made the 400. Mine let out the magic smoke after my windshield leaked in my 18 wheel mobile.
Awesome Dave 👍🏻
Great review David thank you 🙂👍
Well done and informative video! Thanks and 73 from America - KZ4JK
I have a ftm 200. PMG is my favorite function.
Great video. Hope the yaesu ft817 replacement is going to look like this ft820 maybe with 20w. Here's hoping 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
As always good video Dave am I convinced to get one south Mmmm
Instead of so many bands, I'd rather want to see SSB on a radio at this price point
Actually, it can TX on the bottom frequency, it can be done from a secondary button on the microphone.

Thank you Dave. Top review. Got me salivating...OOhh err mrs! 💦

The RT Systems software is very popular, please see the link here; www.hamradio.co.uk/yps-m500-usb-for-new-yaesu-ftm-500-radio
