Now You See It - Chuck Henry version (5/1/89)

- Here's a full episode of the Chuck Henry version of Now You See It, which in my opinion is very underrated. It's too bad that it wasn't as popular as it could've been. Chuck is also not a bad host.
I included the original commercials in this upload, as I figured some people would get a kick out of the old ads. If you would prefer that I cut out the commercials, let me know, and I'll take this down and upload another version with the ads cut out.
I hope you enjoy!!
this was on when I went to college 1989, it was on CBS, only one season, still pretty good show. Thanks for the ads!!!
Speaking of Sale of the Century, Alan was a BIG champion on the show in 1986.
This is a great 1989 game show!!
KCPQ is where a lot of NBC and CBS game shows through the 80s and early 90s ended up because KIRO and KING(our CBS and NBC affiliates) carried either syndicated programming or news or whatever.
Not only this show, but at one time or another the CBS version of Feud, Bob Goen's Wheel, Press Your Luck, the early portion of Classic Concentration, Sale of the Century, and many others were picked up by Channel 13 from their sign on in 1980-around 1992 or so.
Wish either GSN or Buzzr would air this version, since the long-held claim that Chuck allegedly put an embargo on it being rerun was disproven.
I feel like it's gotta happen eventually at this rate!! Just gotta keep crossing our fingers.
Chuck, if Classic Concentration and MG/HSH were eventually seen on the latter anything is possible.
buzzr has more of a chance, since they 1, got rights to practically MG libraries, 2, GSN wouldn’t wanna air this.
I remember watching the New Now You See It with Chuck Henry back in 1989 every morning at 10:30am right between Family Feud with Ray Combs at 10am and the Price Is Right with Bob Barker at 11am.
I remember Nancy Vu. She gave hugs, during my Senior year in high school.
I Think This Also Aired On WTKR 3 In Hampton Roads VA as well
In fairness, I never got a chance to see this version -- it wasn't cleared in my city as I recall. And you are right -- it isn't bad and may not have gotten a fair shake. (I rather feel for Chuck Henry ,he was probably seen as trying to 'replace' Jack Narz, unfairly or not.) Two things about this version that just strike me the wrong way and they are minor: the 'crown' around the champion's name tag; Ye gods! And this version's logo; it looks like a child wrote it in crayon. But the set rocks!
Orlando nor Atlanta cleared it. Dothsn, AL opted for Geraldo
Just stumbled upon this. Thank you for sharing a CH ep!
I also loved the show, and this is a great video. Thank you!
Needless to say, I want to see more of it. Specifically, I'm looking for video of the show in which a second-round puzzle ends with the word PIPER and the category has something to do with Shakespeare.
You are so darn right! I heard in 1989 CBS and NBC Daytime Game Shows went downhill, with Sale and Super Password airing their finales and Card Sharks airing its finale, but thank goodness for youtube, you know what I mean?
I mean it was a good revival of a classic Goodson Todman game, but it might have been too little too late considering the state of daytime TV at that point.
Thanks for uploading this episode of Chuck Henry's NYSI, this was NOT on in my area when I was growing up!
Chuck Henry was the highly prolific local TV news anchormen whose intelligent headlines made him one of thjournalists.e medium's most acclaimed
I agree with you that this is underrated.
Hopefully Buzzr will eventually show this show someday. We never thought we would see Classic Concentration again and look what happened
One of two things will have to occur, either Chuck Henry finally gives Buzzr the green light or Chuck Henry passes away because like Gene Rayburn and the MGHSH, Chuck doesn't want his version aired because he felt embarrassed in his performance
@@boilermaker2006 Not true. GSN had it they just chose not to air it. It had nothing to do with Chuck requesting GSN to not air it.
Yup, and it is definately a great stand-alone tune to listen too.
@14:55, for those familiar with criminal justice stuff, that sounds oddly a lot like an NCIC hit alert on a police MDT... Anyway good to see this rare version of NYSI thanks for postin'! xD
This show wasn't cleared in Grand Rapids, Michigan either. We had Family Feud at 12noon. Keep the commercials.
It aired at 10:30 AM not at noon
this is good with the old commercials
On the $400 board, I also saw “RUBRIC” on line three. Sounds like a good answer to me!
I was young, when Chuck Henry hosted that show.
Consider it said, I think Sale should come back in syndication, maybe with 21st century prizes, and a $1,000,000 cash jackpot, that's what I think the Fremantle people ought to consider.
Hey, that's that buzzer The Price is Right was using by that time. But we should've heard that foghorn when time ran out in the bonus round. The original used it originally in 1974.
TPIR still uses it, as does the newest version of Match Game.
I had Classic Concentration on WHO-TV 13 in 1989 also. That's the NBC station also in the Ames/Des Moines area.
and 1989 also marked the beginning of the end for NBC Sautrday Morning Cartoons when NBC cancelled Disney's Gummi Bears (it went to ABC, then 1st-run syndication for 2 more seasons). Then when NBC lost the Gummis, they also cancelled The Smurfs and then Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1990 and 1991 respectively. None of NBC's new cartoons in the '91-'92 season lasted more than one season and by the Fall of 1992 NBC Saturday Morning Cartoons was gone for good.
megamanj2004X NBC in the 90s became TNBC with the advent of Saved By The Bell.
I think this show was on in Seattle/Tacoma, WA.
Thing is though, it was probably on KCPQ 13(at that point an independent, but also an affiliate of the fledgling Fox network; although at that point, Fox was only programing a couple nights a week, so the station like all Fox affiliates at that time was more an independent then a network station).
Some nice shots of the audience area of what is now The Bob Barker Studio, and some of the crew (Andrew Felsher, and others).
Was Andrew Felsher related to Howard, the longtime producer of Feud and several other Marc Goodson shows?
Steve in the 760 yes he's Howard's son
We had this on WJBK 2 when it was a CBS station it has been FOX 2 for 20 years but channel 2 took Card Sharks off a year before it was cancelled and aired syndicated Family Feud but not the CBS version with Ray Combs
WJBK didn't air Card Sharks from like April or May 1988 when Morton Downey Jr. Show took over the 10am slot to about January 3, 1989 when the station's logo changed and added the nighttime Family Feud and still not the daytime Feud where WJBK aired People's Court at 10am and Regis And Kathie Lee at 9am
O Chenault Same thing for WAGA-TV and WVEU now WUPA Channel 69 picked up until they cancelled the show and the New NOW YOU SEE IT until June. Now you now why viewers are not satisfied on everything.
Yes,I recall this being on WJBK in the day.
Same goes with WAGA in Atlanta
Johnny Olson had passed before 1989. And TPIR had Rod Roddy.
Alan was also on "$ale of The Century"
To Be Perfectly Honest, I Believe that NOW YOU SEE IT Deserved a Longer Run.
Well blame Pat Sajak for that. In January 1989 he left daytime WOF on NBC for his failed late night show in CBS and the ratings plummeted crazily under its new host. The show was eventually cancelled on NBC in June but CBS picked it up almost immediately. CBS already had two established game shows (Family Feud and The Price Is Right) at that time. That made NOW YOU SEE IT expendable to be cancelled.
Now you see it! LOL
And now you don't.
I do agree that NYSI deserved better, and that CH was an underrated host.
Very much so
Me too and there should be z revival complete with Chump Change
Actually there's a video on youtube somewhere of the beginning of a Card Sharks(bob eubanks version) episode from KCPQ 13.
As for Chuck Henry's hosting abilities, he looked like a pretty good host for this show.
The problem though at least IMO is this was aired in 1989 when networks were trying to get rid of all their daytime game shows as fast as possible(except for a few), so that might have contributed to its quick demise a bit.
Chuck must have enjoyed it that he auditioned for Wheel before the job went to Bob Goen. The story of Chuck not wanting this being rerun is a myth. GSN had it they just chose not to rerun it. Hopefully Buzzr will rerun it soon. If they got the concentrations and MGHSH anything is possible.
Sound effects from Classic Concentration
If you would like to be a contestant here on the Chuck Henry version of "Now You See It", you should of done that in 1989.
Or as Rod Roddy once said...forget it.
@@erikbunty2016 HaHa! Yeah, I got that before.
I like the original commercials!
That was from WTOL Toledo 11. Solo round was won the previous Friday. WJBK 2 had the 1989 Henry NYSI and I taped two episodes one is the finale (7/14/89) and the 6/30/89 episode (the same day of the last daytime Wheel Of Fortune on NBC before moving to CBS a few weeks later) I watched the 6/30/89 up to the qualifying round and the tape ran out during the commercial and how did the contestant do in the solo round on the 6/30/89 broadcast? WJBK didn't air Card Sharks from like April or May 1988 when Morton Downey Jr. took over the 10am slot (People's Court late in the summer 1988) to about January 3, 1989 the same day the WJBK's logo changed and debuted nighttime Family Feud. During that time WJBK aired Morton Downey Jr. at 10am.
Before WJBK became FOX 2 they preempted several CBS game shows like our NBC station WDIV did with their networks fare I have seen both Password Plus and Super Password Jim Perry's Card Sharks the CBS Family Feud Child's Play and others that wasn't aired here on GSN
WDIV had Super Password for three months in the summer of 1987 at 9:30am and WJBK aired Jim Perry Card Sharks and it was reruns during 1982-84 at 9am. CBS Feud was picked up in Detroit in 1991 and WADL 38 Mt. Clemens/Detroit got that.
As far as I know,WJBK never aired the CBS Family Feud in the daytime.
WJBK had the nighttime Family Feud and didn't pick it up at first. It joined the schedule after the New Year 1989 just shortly after the logo change until September 1990 where it got replaced with the Joker's Wild '90.
Nick albers I do recall that the primetime syndicated Family Feud was a late addition to their schedule for sure.Considering how long that edition of Joker's Wild lasted, replacing the Feud was a poor decision on their part.
Wow, lol, I was a kiddie back in 89 :D
NYSI wasn't on in the Ames/Des Moines, IA area either, in the 9:30 am time slot where it was, Jeopardy was on.
Yes, indeed.
The theme song for this show has to be the most re-used one ever. It was originally used for Bill Cosby's short-lived comedy-variety show in the early 70's. It was later used as the theme for another game show (which I can't recall right now). And now used again for this show. I suppose CBS had the rights to it and didn't want to waste it.
+DoubleMrE It was only used as the pilot theme for Blank Check, then it was used for NYSI '74, and then NYSI '85, then this show.
Greg Palmer Oh, ok. So, its more like 2 1/2 shows then. 😄
DoubleMrE and the name of the song is “Chump Change” by Quincy Jones
Ironically a promo for the Cosby show preceded this.
After 4 weeks into the run, they started doubling the points in the second board when time was running out. I gotta wonder, was there at least one episode of the Henry Now You See It version where time ran out completely and nobody reached the 1000 points to win the qualifying round?
They need to show this on bzzzr
Interesting to hear Don Morrow's voice as announcer. I assume this was the only Goodson game he did.
John Harlan would've done a better job.
Don Morrow was also the announcer for Sale of the Century.
IIRC, Alan was a contestant on syndie $ale of the Century during the Winner's Board era.
Nice version of the show, Chuck was good, surprised he didn't think so.
Actually that is jot the case at all GSN had it they just chose not to run it. Now hopefully, Buzzr will rerun it
In fact, he probably would be great succeding Alex Trebek on J!
They appear to be a bunch of sliding shutters with the lights underneath. Kind of like really tight blinds.
This is the 1st episode of Don Morrow announcing.
I so remember the Cool Whip jingle!!!!
Sourced from WTOL, Toledo 11, as I can tell at the start of this clip.
Warts are painful.
If CBS didn't cancel "Card Sharks", "Now You See It" would've lasted a couple years. "Card Sharks" with Bob Eubanks was very entertaining. But hey, you can't argue with the network execs.
The bells sounded followed by her guess of BELL.
At 2:49, the same buzzer was used on "The Price Is Right".
AARON BAKER Still used on TPIR to this day, along with that famous bell.
It was reworked for 2 years before the more familiar one being used in fall 1991.
They should've added the 'horn' for the time's up signal to avoid confusion. The 'BUZZ BUZZ' sound was later used for "The 'New' Wheel of Fortune" replacing Now You See It in July 1989.
I wish ABC would revive it complete with Chump Change
@tpir1972 and also Blockbusters w/ both Bill Cullen and Bill Rafferty, although for Cullen Blockbusters I think may have subbed for one week of shows. Bob Hilton was the main announcer on Cullen's version, while Rich Jeffries was an occasional sub-announcer towards the end of Cullen's version and was the main announcer on Rafferty's version.
5:39 Line 2! Nixonie!
5:17 Lois was wrong. She had said America not Americas
7:19 Chuck tells Nancy she got 222 pts, LOL
True...
Me too, KHOU In Houston preferred Sally Jesse over Chuck Henry. At least I had Classic Concentration.
As did WKNG in Orlando.
I think Bill Rafferty should've hosted this. Chuck Henry was good, but his heart was obviously not in the job.
@mgsnv2 and Chuck's NYSI wasn't on in the Ames/Des Moines, IA area in 1989, Family Feud was though, but Jeopardy was in the NYSI time slot, which I didn't approve of.
Could be worse you could have a half/hour talk show!
If Chuck would have been more self confident, not only would we have seen his episodes on GSN, but also he would have been a perfect successor to Bob Barker on TPIR.
How the heck do those neon lights "replace" the orange backdrop when a contestant buzzes in? Is it just a slide projector? I can't figure out this optical illusion for the life of me.
It looks like they used switchable glass. You can see the red neon tubes in between the white neon. When the lockout is reset, the red neon lights come on just a split second before the glass switches to frosted. You can see it best in the championship round at 14:39.
Chuck Henry is more of a news anchor.
Even better in 1974!
@zachhoran I think that Top Secret Wink Martindale's GS was considered. I heard that It didn't sell in 1988 because CBS committed to Feud and I think Top Secret was a contender but CBS won the rights to Feud.
I agree that Chuck Henry wasn't too bad of a host, but from what I've heard, he doesn't think the same. The episodes from this run likely won't be on GSN anytime in the near future at his request. These days he still works as a news anchor at KNBC in Los Angeles.
It's actually been confirmed that Chuck never put an embargo on this version being rerun...GSN/Buzzr just chose not to air it, for w/e reason.
Now he is retired
Was the 1989 version of this show shot where the price is right is taped
I agree
My dad told me I stuck food in the VCR once!
Narz had been retired for years by that point.
The Name's the Same (1951-1955): Lee Vines
Blockbusters (1987): Rich Jeffries
Beat the Clock (1979-1980): Jack Narz
Rich Jeffries also announced Super Password for a while, although Gene Wood ended up taking over for him.
They did bring back Sale of the Century into syndication in 2007, and it was terrible. The game itself wasn't too bad but the pacing was so slow because they were trying to sell the prizes to the home audience during the show. That also meant that some of the prizes were totally chintzy, like the handbag rental service for a year.
@tpir1972 Gene Wood was too busy announcing "Family Feud", "Classic Concentration" at the time and was also rotating with Bob Hilton from time to time on "Win, Lose or Draw" for Kline and Friends.
And he just finished Card Sharks. I guess he needed a break.
Well, the reruns aired in syndication on their CBS affiliate.
I remember too growing up in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Channel 7 ONLY played The Price is Right while they put Oprah on at 9am before it moved to KING 5. KING 5 played their Seattle Today show instead. Meanwhile, KOMO 4 NEVER moved their game shows to KCPQ at all. It's now just a TOTAL SHAME that daytime TV is either two MORE hours of Today, news that's already beaten like a dead mule, trashy talkshows galore and CRAP!!!!!! The ONLY game show on in the morning is STILL TPIR.
markofly76 well as a Seattle native that is familiar with KIRO TV cause I used to appear on the children’s show “JP Patches” they had a bad reputation of not airing a few CBS Daytime shows from the 70’s to the 90’s most notably B&B for the first 7-8 years of the show. They were downright awful and watch KOMO instead.
KOMO 4 is ABC in Seattle. ABC daytime went to sitcom reruns instead of game shows by then.
What about Let's Make a Deal?
In 2000 NBC was going to revive Concentrstion but they chose a third hour of the today show
my favorite Saturday Morning Cartoon was Winnie the Pooh.
@TheMidknightryder13 it's an eyelash, so it could look like an eye!!
Keep the commercials!
hey is this the same alan that won 9 games on sale of the centuary and lost a shot at the car
I remember watching that. Found one of his episodes...
ua-cam.com/video/FSgMl39eu7I/v-deo.html
Other possible hosts: Marc Summers, Ross Shaffer, Art James, Geoff Edwards, and Bob Goen.
Keep this version. Please.
Ironically, Alan is not the only $ale of the Century alumni here.....So is announcer, Don Morrow.
@tpir1972 and the 1st few years of Garry Moore's version of TTTT as well.
Is he the host of now you see it with chuck Henry from kabc to knbc?
Yes. In fact, he retired from broadcasting late last year
Looks like you haven't listened to a word that we've said, you must stop spamming our videos with these fake IDs.
This is from WTOL-TV Toledo ELEVEN!
Fast forward to today: That real estate tycoon is now president of the U.S. Ugh.
Josh Lyons And a Nazi!
I actually like our president as he has been keeping his promises unlike the current politicians.
I wonder how the "Left" still believes that he is a Nazi when he has not killed off a race of people, did not set up interment camps, and is actually for the Jews. If we were living in a communist society (e.g., North Korea), then our rights would be incredibly limited to practically nothing. Even our right to say what we want about our president is protected by Freedom of Speech to a certain degree; in a Communist country, people would be punished severely for going against their leader. If we were living in Nazism, then why do we not have wealth redistribution yet? So, be very blessed and thankful that we have our Constitution to keep Communism from happening.
LIVE WITH IT.
Dave C agreed...and the left can't answer that simple question you asked.
And he is going to be president again because Americans are so dann stupid
Why wasn't Quincy Jones included in the credits?
Accordion is a squeezebox.
But Johnny DID do the Bud Collyer version of it in the 60s.
27:42 - Who is that?
I don't care what anyone says, but WHY couldn't Jack Narz come back? I'll bet the show would have lasted longer...
At 19:14, was that a young Raven-Symone???
Yes
And she would growvipmtobe a game show host herself
Gene already left WLOD by the time NYSI premired
The Cosby Show aired on CBS in Toledo?
Zach Horan The Cosby Show ran on NBC and my NBC station WDIV picked up the reruns of the Cosby Show in 1988. When I visit my family in Monroe, Michigan which is near the Ohio Border and I know WTOL is a CBS affiliate in Toledo and it picked up the Cosby Show.
I think this is the only G-T game show NOT using Johnny Olson NOR Gene Wood as announcer.
Bob Hilton and Burton Richardson are mentioned above. But if you go WAY back, Kenny Williams, later associated with Heatter-Quigley, was announcer on Herb Shriner's "Two For the Money" (Dennis James did the Old Gold commercials); when Sam Levenson replaced Shriner, Ed McMahon became the announcer.
@tpir1972 TTTT '90 says hi. :) (Burton Richardson, Charlie O' Donnell)
