So is Line6 dead? I don’t hear anything about them or any products other than random variations on smaller, always scaling down versions of the Helix family.
Also have you tried a Knaggs?! I have a Steve Stevens model that crushes!

On the point about moving back to classic designs, I definitely feel that but I think it needs to be specifically classic designs with more varied or modern features. We’ve had enough 8 string guitars in black with active mount pickups in a strat style body. Let’s get a tobacco burst T style 8 string with passive mounting.

Please! I played an EVH Wolfgang standard the other day and was blown away by the features on the neck. At $600 having a roasted maple neck with graphite reinforcement I’m baffled that those aren’t standard features on all guitars at this point. Pair that with Harley Benton’s stainless steel fretwork and that sounds like a great combination to me!

Strandberg probably would be considered the "standard". Ibanez QX series with "slanted frets" is actually an amazing approach being it isn't exactly a multiscale but plays amazing.

At first, I would’ve thought Ornsby would be the standard-bearer, but then if we consider the fact that Strandberg is also the standard-bearer for headless guitars and how popular headless multi scales are, I can see your point.

I don't think multi-scale will die out since it has a legitimate & useful purpose plus it's super comfortable to play. It has definitely landed in its own niche area through the years though, and there are people like me who look at a traditional black or brown guitar & are completely uninspired, I'm a visual person 😂gimme wacky colours, designs, shapes etc and I'll pick that baby up!

I've still yet to even PLAY a fanned fret instrument. However, for my own taste I can survive without multi-scale until I get typically get to the 8 string guitar range, super low tuned basses, and even 7 strings. I tune my 8 string down to Drop D#1 so if I was DARE to try and match that tuning of even F# Standard on a bass, I'd be crazy not to go after an extended scale bass. Like Dingwall or the new Ibanez BTB806MS 6-string bass.

@Dung Eater I've played guitar/bass for 20 years without needing them 😂 I'll grab a Dingwall or Ibanez multiscale bass in the future just to cover my low tuned grounds. Aside from that, I'm content!

I like seeing signature artists able to show off all their gear, because you know they use a TON of different gear on the stage and in the studio. I know I would never be able to stick with *just* Kiesel, Gibson, or Fender (I use a Hyperdrive, Les Paul Goddess, and Strat in my 80s band, and a CT624 and Les Paul Custom in my classic/alt rock band; I'd never be able to pick a single model as a "signature" because I use different guitars for different things).

Yeah multiscales are definitely a niche thing. A lot of folks round here in the east coast of Canada don’t flock to them in mass droves. Mostly V’s, single cuts, strata, teles. Even 7 or 8 string guys stick to Jackson or ESP/LTD stuff.

For me I was stoked to see Rabea announce his Music Man deal and upcoming signature, as well as the single coil set. Carpenter is the 2nd guitarist recently to announce a co-endoresment thing with Kiesel. Devin Townsend did the same thing with Kiesel and also for headless models. And he did it with Framus blessing.
I'm curious. Would you ever demo a Kiesel if they reached out to you?

It seems that the smaller companies are better suited to the extended range. Since it is specialized range of instruments. Kiesel have also started working with Devin Townsend, while he is a Framus artist. I think it makes sense; You look way more gracious as a manufacturer if you can move aside to make space for someone bringing something different, you actually reinforce your relationship with the artist if you give them room to grow, and you dont have to start making a product outside your wheelhouse to suit their needs. Maybe this shift in mentality means that manufacturers could even start collaborating in the future, in the way pedal makers do.

Tried a multiscale 7 string in 2017, and aside from the guitar being horribly made (I hear Legator are doing a bit better these days), I didn't care much for the multiscale. I've had an 8 string with a straight 28" scale since 2018 and I'm perfectly fine with it. but I do tune down to DGDGCFAD for my music, so if I were playing in standard, I might consider 8 gauge strings instead of 9 gauge. It's not the 1st-6th strings that are the problem, light strings are easy to get to compensate for the long scale, it's getting strings heavy enough for the 8th string that's the problem. I use a 68 for the 7th string and a damn 95 for the 8th string. XD

The 3rd batch of AJ sigs. from Epiphone have apparently caught up with demand, as I see multiple online retailers showing they have them in stock. Why is Hunter saying they're all sold out again? Personally, I don't think these girlyman art editions will do as well. Maybe for collectors it's all the same? When did Epiphone say the plain back ones would be unlimited? This is wishful thinking. The price will be the same regardless.

People are flipping out, but Stef didnt “move” to Kiesel. Hes friends with Jeff and likes Kiesels guitars so he’s playing them live too. Not quite like the deals we’ve seen with like Kirk and ESP+Gibson. Also, there HAS been word that those are not signature models and specifically the white one won’t be available to the public as is as they won’t commercially offer the painted fretboard (Jeff stated all this on the livestream they did together). You can however get his Fishmans in that layout since they have the CNC programming for it and they are already partnered with Fishman. So outside of the painted fretboard, you can spec either of those guitars if you want as there’s nothing inherently “special” about them other than that.
TLDR - Stef isn’t a signature artist with Kiesel and there’s no plans right now for a signature model. He’s just friends with Jeff and likes their guitars so he’s going to add them to his live gear.

Nothing is dying out except the idea that there is only one genre needing one kind of guitar. Add to that we know have players with no intention of playing live. Others that collect guitars that decades ago what have collected postage stamps or coins. Some genres are growing enough to be noticed by makers who know that 100% of a niche market can be bigger than trying to be to be all things to all buyers. In short another thousand builders making a Strat clone have finally accepted the glut. Still other makers like Ibanez are making specific niche guitars for most genres.

I think multi scale will probably be around forever for bass, it makes a lot more sense for bass than guitar

I actually think multiscale / fanned frets don't really work in the way that is often claimed they do (which is basically how it ultimately 'should' be more comfortable to play). And why do Ibanez guitars come in fanned frets versions but also normal frets when the concept would be flawless? And what about guitars with frets that are angled the opposite (dare I say 'wrong') direction? The reality is, most people don't like it at all. And you do need to physically play differently on such a guitar. It requires relearning stuff people don't want to put time into I'd say. I own an Ibanez QX52 BKF and honestly kinda regret buying the one with angled frets. It's a great guitar in terms of sound and features. But playability just isn't completely flawless. Having tried it myself, I'd say it's mostly hype and much less so true innovation that works. I'm sure people can argue Ibanez simply 'got it wrong' with their version. But even conceptually the whole 'long string short string' stuff is actually unnecessary for guitars with the string gauges we generally tend to play. Especially on a regular 6 string or 7 string guitar. Guitars already come with custom strings for each string position. You can change them out for something else you prefer.

I didn’t need to relearn anything. It takes 5 mins getting used to and then it feels pretty normal 🤷‍♂️

Kiesel are killing it lately by getting players that are already endorsed by other big brands. Devin Townsend plays a headless T type along with his Framus Stormbenders, Steph Carpenter just got one, and they have a list of "endorsers" on their site that probably aren't exclusive artists. I don't see a problem with this. It's cool that brands are ok being in open relationships.

He didn’t “move” anywhere. He’s still a ESP signature artist. He’s friends with Jeff Kiesel and likes their guitars, so he’s just going to be playing their guitars live alongside his ESPs.
