  • Certainly! Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier is a massive ice formation that has been nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” due to its potential catastrophic impact on global sea-level rise. Here are the key points:
    Size and Importance:
Thwaites Glacier is approximately 80 miles wide, making it the widest glacier in the world.
It currently contributes about 4% of annual global sea-level rise1.
    Melting and Warm Ocean Water:
Warm ocean water caused by climate change is flowing underneath and into gaps in the glacier.
Some areas of the glacier are experiencing vigorous melting due to this warm water.
The worry is that we might be underestimating the glacier’s speed of change, which could be devastating for coastal communities worldwide.
    Potential Impact:
Thwaites loses about 50 billion tons of ice annually.
If the glacier were to collapse, sea levels could rise by more than two feet globally.
Some parts of the U.S. might experience even higher sea-level rise.
    Recent Study:
Glaciologists used radar data from Finland’s ICEYE commercial satellite program to study what’s happening below the glacier’s surface.
They found that seawater flows in and away from the glacier with tides, mixing with freshwater.
Warm ocean water also travels deep beneath the ice, contributing to melting and potential collapse.
In summary, Thwaites Glacier poses a significant threat to global sea levels, and understanding its behavior is crucial for coastal planning and climate resilience1. 🌊🏔️

Well I only got 2 minutes in and you repeated the same thing 3 times.

    It is floating ice!

The sea level is not rising. It’s just not. The dock where the original tea party happened is still there, and the water level has not changed.

Why is Miami flooding? Why are the Pacific Islands disappearing? Why are the highest educated and trained earth scientists warning us about sea level rise? The warming ocean waters are expanding from heating and contributing to sea level rise. Actually, the Laws of Physics doesn't care what we think or how uninformed we are about Climate Change. I am mystified about how uncaring we are about the destruction of the natural world that sustains us.

Melting ice has no effect on water levels. Using this logic, a glass of ice water would overflow as the ice melts. But it doesn't. Ever hear of displacement?

That is true for ice that is already in the ocean. Iced that sits on a landmass will have effects.

People will believe anything a "scientist" tells them. I don't.

Get off your ass and go visit the warehouses in Charlston, SC. They all have docks with mouring posts, but they are miles from the Harbor. They were built during the Maunder Minnimum when the sea level was 25 feet higher than it is today. Look back through the earth's history, and as the ice-caps get bigger, the sea level rises. 13,000 years ago, when the poles were relatively ice-free in the summer, the sea level was 400 feet lower!
