    I consulted with several of these tribes in 1990's and this was a dream they never thought would happen. To be clear, it was mostly the cost of repairing the existing dams that forced the decision - not any sudden altruism. I cheer for the animals above all else.

      this happens fairly often. one of our dams in nh just got removed but the main motivation was the cost of repair/maintenance vs. the cost to remove. still excited about it! hoping to see much more of this in the future

      I think you're right on. It's all about the sediment being allowed to make it to the ocean. Thats going to turbo charge the process, not just removing the dam as a barrier.

      @rosiereal Chinook are still struggling to rebound significantly despite a continued ban on fishing. Steelhead are doing better only because fish trapped behind the dams became anadramous when they were removed. Coho seem to be doing better as well, however they have not met abundance goals and calling it an absolute success inappropriate.

The strength and persistence of Native peoples in the US, is finally starting to really make a huge difference in the future of our land. • @FNWild
    @FNWild Місяць тому +38

    The lack of vegetation along the river banks speaks volumes to the instability these dams create on the landscape. The restored patterns of seasonal flows will gradually bring back life as the banks begin to be reestablished. Many of these dams are a blockage of a natural.cooling system for the earth turning living riverbeds and banks into deserts. Sometimes its best to go with the flow!

      Why? If tribes don’t wanna progress with the rest of society, let them stay in the dark.
      Your light switch isn’t magic from ancient ancestors. It’s made from electricity…which comes from dams.
      If you don’t want dams you don’t get a light switch.
      Seems blatantly obvious to me.

      @@georgehaydukeiii6396 How is that a moronic statement? You had a hydroelectric power generation station. Hydroelectric is the cleanest form of power generation. Should we replace it with a coal fired, nuclear, natural gas power plant or just do without? Great idea, turn all electricity off, get rid of all the dams and power plants, the world will be a much better place. But there will also be a lot less people since most of them will be dead from starvation. Everyone tries to look at a very small portion of life and think they are doing a good thing. But when you look at the big picture, suddenly it was not such a good idea. Wonder what is going to offer flood protection to everyone down stream of the dam they removed. When a drought hits, where will they get water from? Ooops didn't think about that.

    I remember years ago watching people at the mouth of the Klamath legally netting every salmon they could using huge nylon nets and trucks on the river bars winching in these nets loaded with salmon that never had the chance to even get a mile up the river from the ocean. There is much irony watching people proclaim that these dams have opened up 400 miles of possible habitat for laying eggs but people catch so many salmon before they can even get up stream to these habitats........crazy stuff.

      Native tribes always had the wisdom not to over harvest and to leave enough breed stock to support their people every year for centuries. That is still the case. What you saw was probably an allotted harvest based on the science of fisheries management.
