I can see z0 is the face of the part. Do you set the groove tool on Z the same way you do the other tools? touching the face with groove insert and make that zero?

If you mean in terms of mastercam , you just choose the desired toolpath for operation to take place, whereas in practical real life application, you can choose the other option too, but touching the part itself and setting depth to be 0 and hence controlling the distance to travel by yourself.
