As always a very informative and just generally well made video, you're one of the channels that i still watch for my leo info, ive owned my leo for over a year now and she is well cared for and is living a happy life, but its always great to watch and listen to someone who also has a fantastic understanding of leos and reptile safety in general!
There are a lot of things you can go the cheap route on when keeping animals, but heating is definitely not one of them. It's best to go with the ones that have been around for a while and have loads of reviews. Especially for animals that depend on certain temperatures for their survival. Sometimes there's a good reason why some brand names have become... brand names. :P I always find it amusing to see a person completely trash a product just to later find out they weren't even using it correctly or they were the real cause of the failure. Lol.
it is easy and cheap. i know a person who keeps and breeds hundreds of snakes without any automation. just room temp is like 26c, and regular bulb 20-40w depending on size of the cage creates nice spot, humidity is also maintained via manual spraying. he is also rack hater, so only small part of his pets are at racks(juvenile stress issues, his coastal taipan litter tends to freak out, so he has no choice), and they are heated by mat+thermostat. the general issue with mats is that you should automate it somehow to be safe. i have arduino based system and because some technical issues i use low wattage mats with foil screens below them, icreasing the output, to heat my cages. Also while for some lizards tanks are great, most snakes are doing better in cages or racks, or at least you have to darken the sides of that fancy branded tank. anyway you can build a 4 ft plywood cage with sliding doors(flip doors make it even easier) in 2 hours and like 40 bucks, so i stopped paying attention to exoterra and other brands long ago.
Genuine question: what do you do when you go on vacation? Do you just keep the heat mats on? Also in general, do you keep heat mats on all the time? I’m having a hard time finding information on this and it’s the only thing stopping me from getting a reptile.
I decided last night that I wanted a geko and I’ve already watched a ton of care and saftey videos😂 now I have to save up to buy supplies and then the geko itself😳
I use products from Zoo Med including their heated pads and I've never had a problem! They have special tanks that PREVENT fires. So, I recommend Zoo Med products. (They've been in business for 12 years!!!)
love your videos, i have two questions: what temperature do you keep yours at? (just making double sure i have it right for when i buy one like yours) and is a heat mat from "The ark" good?
I use the 30-40 gallon zoo Mrs heat pad for my Leo. I also use a thermostat. I have only had my baby for about 3 days and my heat pad only gets up to about 83 degrees max when really I want it to be 90. I placed it on the underside of my tank so it has to go through glass, paper towels, and tile. What should I do? Replace it?
i made a wooden tank for my bearded dragon. is it safe to stick the heat mat on the bottom of it? the spot i put it has plenty of air flow and i did test it out and it goes through the wood nicely. but should i keep it on for hours? will it burn the wood?
My house is super cold like below 65 degrees (Fahrenheit) cold. I'm thinking about getting a leopard gecko. I have a nice Zilla brand heat mat and thermostat for the hot side but I'm wondering what I should do for the cold side. Should I buy another heat mat and thermostat and just set it to 75 degrees or just leave it alone? Or is there something else I should do?
thank you for making this video I was having major trouble about heatmats because my tank had a little drawer type thing under it so it's impossible to put it under I'm definitely going to get eco earth, and a good properly working heat mat
Can insect running under the heat mat start a fire? That's why I'm here. There have been a few times where I tried feeding my gecko but the insects escaped under the map before the gecko caught them. I cant really reach them if they're under that mat, at least without taking everything out
How about heating for dubia roaches? Because I am planning on raising them as food, and they also require heat via heat mat. I plan on housing them in plastic bins, but I'm worried the heat mat will melt the plastic. Should I have a setup where the bin is lifted to allow air flow?
I use a cheap 14W Ebay plastic heat mat underneath their tub. No spacing at all, placed directly on a thick sheet of (pure) oak wood from an old cabinet. No burn marks, yet plenty of heat being transferred. Concerning the tub: don't get one from the dollar store, the plastic isn't of a very good quality, trust me. Instead, get yourself a dark Rubbermaid one. A bit more expensive, but you won't have to worry about the plastic getting brittle or releasing a massive amount of toxic fumes (or melt that fast). And it's dark, which your Dubia will be thankful for. Either way, I recommend you to use a thermostat, just to be on the safer side of everything. You don't want your colony - let alone your house - to go up in flames, right? I bought mine also on Ebay, and it works like a charm. It's normally used among beer brewers, but a lot of reptile breeders are starting to use it in their DIY incubators too due to it's simplicity, accuracy, small size and low price (around $10). I'll put the link down below for you to check it out in case you're interested. Ps: do not install it INSIDE your tank. :) One advice I'll be giving you: be careful with the thick ZooMed heat mats. For some reason, when they don't stick anymore, they have the tendency to melt after a while, specially when no thermostat is being used. No idea why this is, and this only happens when they don't stick anymore, but I myself among others have had this problem with those particular heat mats. www.benl.ebay.be/itm/STC-1000-Digital-Temperature-Controller-Temp-Sensor-Thermostat-Control-220-240V/273193469522?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=572464416197&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Cheers.
Would a cheap one be safe for about a week or a bit less? My cousin bought me one for my gecko because my old one broke, (zoomed) it’s cheap, but I need some advice here 😅
Storage bins pass as tanks? I keep my bearded dragon in a 50 gall0n tank, on top of a wood and glass coffee table and the heating pad sticks between the bottom of her tank and the glass on the coffee table. What I want to know, because my brother in-law got his first beardie yesterday and asked this question, is will the heating pad cook their insides? I say no, because I don't think it would get hot enough and my bearded dragon has reptile turf and glass between her and the mat. Has there been any case where it cooked a reptiles insides?
Heat mats are useless for bearded dragons and potentially dangerous, you need a heat lamp. You also need a 75 gallon minimum or larger for an adult beardie. Reptile turf isn’t a good substrate either. Paper towel is good for quarantine for the first six weeks and under six months. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment.
i know breeders who have used quality plastic tubs for years 10+ yrs and have not experienced ANY fire hazard what so ever. If using plastic ? avoid generic brands it all depends on proper installation, plus room temp , for e.g if a room is fairly hot lets say 80°F, then the heatmat will overheat over 110° F causing a big problen. I've had my diablo blanco for 3 years in a large 60 qt tub with a lamp dimmer and is doing quiet well..i do reccomend your standard leopard gecko enclosure if someone does not have knowledge of this.. great vid
My heat mat for my Giant African Land Snails was £3.36... I’m only using it for an hour a day, and it is supervised. I don’t use it every day, and will be using it much less soon as the weather will get warmer. Will this be okay? I’m terrified of it catching fire. It’s only a small heat mat on a plastic tank. I will not use it at all during summer months, nor will I leave it on unsupervised- I literally watch over it ahaha!!
Hi LG! I was wondering, I've used a 8 watt zoomed heat mat and it cracked the bottom of my Exo-terra tank. I immediately took it out fearing for my leos safety. I don't know how to install a thermostat, since then I've been using bulbs for the past two years for her. Plz help
Great video. Never put a strong heat mat or lamp on a critter keeper too. I made that mistake once and it warped the plastic in a spot and it gave me a big scare. No animals were harmed and I figured the plastic was hard and strong enough to handle it. So wrong.
Well done. When I buy supplies for a tank I try to go cheap or DIY on everything EXCEPT the heat mat. It's just not worth the risk of either killing off your beloved pet or starting a fire & losing your home. I had been curious how you set up your heat mat IN your wooden tanks, but now I know you're not using the same brands/style of mat as me. Mine has a raised area which NEEDS ventilation under it. It also makes me terribly nervous to have a mat directly touching the substrate. I do use plastic bins with no dyes for any critter habitats (usually for growing up in). My current mat is also moveable, on a specially cut (and edged) piece of glass. This way I can tape it under the tank by the edges, or put it inside if needed without the sticky side getting caught on anything/anyone or having to buy a new mat when I change a tank.
when ever I pick up my Leo I look at his feet and they look red and kinda burnt a little I don't now were though I have a heat pad on the side on my tank and also a heat lamp(not the kind your probaly thinking of I did 2 hours of research on it) and he has a reptile carpet he is also living with my other Leo who also has feet that look red,I've had them for 1 1/2 years now and it suddenly apperad about 5 months ago. please reply cause I have no clue what's going on!
Good I like to use exo terra small low (45x45) for my leopard gecko and I use exo terra heatwave. The whole setup cost around £150-£250 but I don't like to be cheap with my pets.

Love your videos, so helpful for newbies :) My big problem is keeping the ambient temperature at recommend numbers...shouldn't a heat lamp (not white, but red etc) be used to keep the temperature at a healthy level? Our house stays pretty cool in the winter.
Hi I just got my leopard gecko yesterday and wanted to clarify something....I purchased a heat may...does the heat may always need to be on or just sometimes? And year round?
I just bought Habistat heat mat for my new bio vivarium for a leopard gecko and its not working. After spending all day setting everything up I turned all things on to test it. My heat mat is set up directly though habistat thermostat to prevent overheating. When checking after an hour it was barely warm at the top where the cable is connected and thermostat was showing it was on so i thought maybe it took longer to get warm. After 3 hours it was exactly the same drawing power constantly. So i decided to plug it directly into the power socket to see if it's the thermostat and the result was the same. I must be one of the very few unlucky people who have ended up with a faulty habistat heat mat. I've done loads of research online, and watched hundreds of videos before even considering to keep a leopard gecko who should be ready to be collected in about 10 days time and now I'm having a dilemma of getting a replacement mat from Habistat or do i go for a different brand and spend more money on a heat mat.....
With a glass exo terra tank like the one in there advert do you recommend the heat Matt being on the outside of the tank on the back wall mines currently on the inside inbetween the foam fake rock face. I’ve herd so many different things ? please help lol.
actually ran into a problem with a heat mat once, had two Leos that always stayed inside their little log hide which was on the heating mat area, one day, they weren't on it, so I thought they were just being idiots. wrong. when I put them back, they were squealing and running off of the area, I touched the bottom of the tank and it freaking burned me! I lifted a tank, and SOMEHOW the mat was folded in half?! (Plus, it burned an antique dresser which made my mother sad ;-;) bought one from Petco a few weeks ago, and it worked normally. sadly, both Leos died two weeks later and now I'm getting a crested gecko. do you think a small heat mat would be enough for a 10 gallon tank? and if not, can I get a tip on how to preserve the heat a bit? (I don't have a uvb since I dont want to risk a too high electric bill)
could you use duct tape on one that won't stay on. i had to remove mine and now it just keeps falling off over time. i thought about using duct tape or something, but i wasn't sure if that would be safe
You need a thermostat to controle the tempeture. Some heat mats can get pretty hot, and depending on the climate you live in, it can be necessary to increase or decrease the temps within your terrarium.
This is probably a really stupid question but I've only ever owned rodents so idk but does the mat go in to the tank or on the table. Sorry I didn't understand the statement in the video
is it ok to use a regular heat mat, it came with a protective cover thing that keeps it from getting to hot the settings are warm, low, medium, and high im a new owner of a leopard gecko (havent got it yet) and im very confusef
My heat mat is at a 120 degrees. is that okay for my leopard gecko on the hot side? I have heard it should be 90 degrees . please help me, I really want a happy and healthy leopard gecko
Jeez that's way too hot, turn it off before he gets burned! 90 is a great temperature. If you get a thermostat, the heat mat will always be the right temperature :)
I had gotten a heat mat from fluker's and my friend, who breeds reptiles, says it would be safe to put the heat mat in the tank, and it makes me nervous so if I could, I would like a second opinion on this please!
You can just keep the heat mat covered with substrate. You can control the heat mat with a thermostat and if you want to know the temperature of the heat mat's surface, you can put a thermometer probe on it.
i bought 2 different heat mats and use proper installation and a gap of air between the mat and the floor but my heat mats keep giving too high temperatures!! like 36 to even 39 celcius!!! i even put a thin book between the mat and the tub and still gettinh 35+! wtf is wrong im going crazy here... i dont think my thermometer is faulty i tried it elsewhere... (i have the probe taped flat at the bottom of the inside of the tub)

Got a zooMed one and the sticker didn't work. Month later heat mat melts and cracks my $150 tank. I have rubber feet that go on the tank and elevate it well above my dresser so it shouldn't have caused problems.
Did you use a thermostat tho? Because I know for a fact that especially the ZooMed ones are prone to melt when no thermostat is being used (had the exact same issue with a ZooMed one).
@@coinjar4962 Okay, I think I'm getting you now. I think you're switching up things here. There's a big difference between a *thermostat* and a *thermometer* . A *thermostat regulates the temperature* inside a container by switching on and off a heat mat or lowering the wattage input of a heat mat. The probe of the thermostat stays in the container at all times, close to the heat mat (but not directly on top of it). A *thermometer* on the other hand *can only read the temperature, not adjust it* . Am I correct when I now say you're not using a thermostat? ;)
MY baby leo keeps throwing up all the time every time I feed her. I got her from petsmart because I wanted a leo again and my mom would not let me get a $30 gecko. What do I do.
Elizabeth m put it underneath one side of the tank. Elevate the tank. You can use books or the corner things that come with zoo med heat mats. Connect it to a thermostat

All of the heat mats I use are from ZooMeds if you use this brand be prepared to spend a little more than you would with other brands. I will be installing or connecting thermostats to both of them soon. so that I can control the how much heat they give off. And she right if you buy off of ebay make sure that the heat mats you get are of good quality and stock.
I made a Styrofoam support in exactly the size of my tank, so that the middle part of my terrarium is still supported, instead of just raising the corners (which seems important to me in bigger terrariums). The Styrofoam goes *around* the heat mat, so the meat doesn't get overheated and air still allowed to flow.
+Leopard Gecko I've got a Leopard Gecko named Diego too. I love him so much. He's been having shedding problems lately but I think it's because we switched from Spagnum moss to damp paper towels in the moist hide.
my heat mat came with these little rubber things that you put on the corner of your tank my gecko has been using it for 2 years now and she is fine i have never had any problems with her heat mat but it was a bit on the expensive side though 30 dollars but it was worth it cause now i have my little gecko pixel i love her =3

It needs to go under glass and plastic enclosures but it must be inside wooden vivariums.
Fiona Shepley you’re not supposed to really use heat mats in wooden terrariums at all since it can catch fire. its safer to use a lamp
Thanks leopard gecko for the tip I will definitely use this for my barking/thick tailed gecko

I've done loads of research online, and watched hundreds of videos before even considering to keep a leopard gecko who should be ready to be collected in about 10 days time and now I'm having a dilemma of getting a replacement mat from Habistat or do i go for a different brand and spend more money on a heat mat.....
I actually just had to return a heat mat because I'd purchased too large of one for my terrarium. Woops! I don't want anything melting though!!
I'm about to build a wood cage for my redtail, where would I put the heat mat , on the bottom outside or what ?
In a acrylic 10 gallon tank that was for fish do I put the heat mat in or ourside
Under the tank. Make sure there's a gap between the heat mat and the stand
I know heat mats are safe but is it true that they have to be turned on 24 hours???
Are aquariums safe to use with heat mats?
With a glass exo terra tank like the one in there advert do you recommend the heat Matt being on the outside of the tank on the back wall mines currently on the inside inbetween the foam fake rock face. I’ve herd so many different things ? please help lol.
It must be UNDERNEATH the tank, it will not benefit the Leo whatsoever on the wall!
actually ran into a problem with a heat mat once, had two Leos that always stayed inside their little log hide which was on the heating mat area, one day, they weren't on it, so I thought they were just being idiots.
wrong.
when I put them back, they were squealing and running off of the area, I touched the bottom of the tank and it freaking burned me!
I lifted a tank, and SOMEHOW the mat was folded in half?!
(Plus, it burned an antique dresser which made my mother sad ;-;)
bought one from Petco a few weeks ago, and it worked normally.
sadly, both Leos died two weeks later and now I'm getting a crested gecko.
do you think a small heat mat would be enough for a 10 gallon tank?
and if not, can I get a tip on how to preserve the heat a bit?
(I don't have a uvb since I dont want to risk a too high electric bill)
Generally, no heating is needed. Cresties thrive at room temperature. If it gets too cold, it would probably be better to have a ceramic heat emitter.
I have put my heat mat under my tank but i can't feel any heat from it and it is plugged in, do i need to wait more or is it broken
Zippr you generally have to wait 12 hours or so
whould you recommend a stick on heat mat for a custom built glass snake tank or a non stick one.
Does the place where you get your heating matts ship to America?
can a heat mat work through 3-4 inches of terra sahara substrate?
could you use duct tape on one that won't stay on. i had to remove mine and now it just keeps falling off over time. i thought about using duct tape or something, but i wasn't sure if that would be safe
+kelly i use PVC tape, but ive also used duct tape and masking tape in the past.
So do you need to lift the faunarium a little bit for the heat mat?
If I get a leopard gecko, under the tank or in the tank? Also, why do you need a thermostat?
You need a thermostat to controle the tempeture. Some heat mats can get pretty hot, and depending on the climate you live in, it can be necessary to increase or decrease the temps within your terrarium.
Under tank if glass, in tank if wooden
This is probably a really stupid question but I've only ever owned rodents so idk but does the mat go in to the tank or on the table. Sorry I didn't understand the statement in the video
Underneath, just raise it up so it doesn't burn your table, hope this helped😇
LeopardGecko how many watts is ideal for them?
Thanks so much for having this I am on amazon trying to find the best heating mats
is it ok to use a regular heat mat, it came with a protective cover thing that keeps it from getting to hot the settings are warm, low, medium, and high im a new owner of a leopard gecko (havent got it yet) and im very confusef
You'll still need a thermostat. It could malfunction and overheat
Is great choice heat mats a good brand?
I had gotten a heat mat from fluker's and my friend, who breeds reptiles, says it would be safe to put the heat mat in the tank, and it makes me nervous so if I could, I would like a second opinion on this please!
I personally wouldn’t. There’s always a chance that it’s gonna be fine but it’s always better to go the safer route.
Please don't hate on my just asking everyone's opinion, heat bulb or heat mat, what's better for leopard geckos?
+Shannon May heat mat :)
+Shannon May Heat mat, leopard geckos use belly heat so bulbs dont do as good of a job and can hurt their eyes.
When you put the heat mat inside the wooden viv, is there no chance it could burn the reptile if there is direct contact?
You can just keep the heat mat covered with substrate. You can control the heat mat with a thermostat and if you want to know the temperature of the heat mat's surface, you can put a thermometer probe on it.
Fiona Shepley Ok thanks :)
So with the wooden one do you need to drill holes to put the heat mat
Molly idk beaut you put it inside
your videos are so helpful because u want to get a gecko and they give me lots if helpful tips
very good advice there, also the same rules for ant formicaruims
+Griffin24712978 Yeah, although with ant formicariums the quality isn't as important for the ants survival, it just makes cleaning/maintenance easier.
Can I put 1 leopard gecko in a 5 gallon tank? Only one leo
No that's too small you need a minimum of a 10 gallon/ 45 litres for one gecko or even better a 20 gallon. 5 however is far too small.
TheVintageBookWolf thank you I heard people say 10 gallons but I was wondering if 5 gallon would work thx for replying tho
what kind of plastic is it not okay to put heat mats under
Can you put a heat mat under a glass tank with the eco earthmix substrate down too? Or will the heat not go through
Yep. Eco earth is an insulator, though, so I'd expose the glass under the warm hide.
i bought 2 different heat mats and use proper installation and a gap of air between the mat and the floor but my heat mats keep giving too high temperatures!! like 36 to even 39 celcius!!! i even put a thin book between the mat and the tub and still gettinh 35+!
wtf is wrong im going crazy here...
i dont think my thermometer is faulty i tried it elsewhere...
(i have the probe taped flat at the bottom of the inside of the tub)
You need a glass or wooden tank, not a tub. You also need a thermostat :)
+Leopard Gecko Do you need a heat mat for your little buddy because I am setting up my tank soon

What company's heat mat do you use leopard gecko
is zoomed safe for my leopard geckos?
what heat matt is best for leopard gecko
what watt is best
What heat mat would you recommend for a plastic tub ?
Kev kev yes no problem as long as it doesn't transfer too much heat to your pet
I recommend a tank :)
What heat mat do you use and what thermometer
LeopardGecko can I use a heating pad for my leopard Gecko?
Fiona Shepley does it matter how many watts it is?
I can put the heat pad wood as long as there is air flow?
Yes. Connect it to a thermostat as well
Can you use a 10 gallon tank?
Hi I was wondering if you could do a vid on how to tell the gender of a creative?
I'm planning on getting a wooden cage for a blue tongue skink and they burrow so I'm afraid to put the heat mat on the inside idk what to do!
Your skink will be fine as long as you connect the heat mat to a thermostat :)
Fiona Shepley thanks:)
@@TheOpelkoenjas I used one once a week and the temps were fine, I think the sticker just wore off real quick
@@coinjar4962 Wait, I can't follow now. You used a thermostat once a week?
@@TheOpelkoenjas well I just used a thermometer to check the temp
+John Chase what are you feeding it
+Matthew Moyer Never mind she just did not know their was a heated side of the tank. I was feeding meal warms because she won't chase crickets.
ohhh ok ya that makes sense
so it is ok for me to use a under the tank self adhesive pad by zoo med?
Yep
What can you do if you have a glass tank?
Elizabeth m put it underneath one side of the tank. Elevate the tank. You can use books or the corner things that come with zoo med heat mats. Connect it to a thermostat
Fiona Shepley ok thank you
Great video.
Thank you miss ❤
can you place a heat mat inside a glass terrarium
also what brands of reptile heating mats hold out the longest
hello, im cora from hugeworth company. locate in china. we are manufacturer of the reptile heating pad,and support customized heating pad.are interest it? my email:sales12@hugeworth.com. my skype:hugeworth-cora. my whatsapp:+86-135-10642329. mostly welcome your consult.give our pet a warm home.
Im scared to pic up my lepard gecko in case she bites me and no videos are working pls answer in more detail
Your gecko probably won't bite unless they're a baby. It doesn't hurt anyway
do you have to keep the heat pad on 24/7?
You could, whatever keeps the temperatures correct
All of the heat mats I use are from ZooMeds if you use this brand be prepared to spend a little more than you would with other brands. I will be installing or connecting thermostats to both of them soon. so that I can control the how much heat they give off. And she right if you buy off of ebay make sure that the heat mats you get are of good quality and stock.
i have a heat mat under a plastic tub and it doesnt do anything
should I turn the heat mat off at night?
You can turn it down to 80 at night, but you don’t need to
I made a Styrofoam support in exactly the size of my tank, so that the middle part of my terrarium is still supported, instead of just raising the corners (which seems important to me in bigger terrariums). The Styrofoam goes *around* the heat mat, so the meat doesn't get overheated and air still allowed to flow.
ON swell reptiles there is an £18 thermostat that works really well
1: don't use it unless you have a thermostat
+k den lol, i didnt use it with a thermostat for like 8 years, but thats because my ones max temp is 32-34 oC and it went off every night.
+Leopard Gecko what if you have a aquarium tank do I have to buy a new tank
+Leopard Gecko mines on a timer and my gecko does great on it /o/ invention of the century!
+! Multiverse172 ! NO. An aquarium tank works just fine. Just make sure that you wash it out before prepping it for reptile use.
Are heat rocks safe?
Absolutely not. They can burn and even kill your reptile.
Great advice! Now this is unrelated, but why is you channel just called "Leopard Gecko" but you introduce it as "Leopard Gecko Talk?" Just wondering.
+Leila's Zoo because it was originally called Leopard gecko talk, and the link to the page is ua-cam.com/users/leopardgeckotalk :')
Okay. It is possible to change the name without changing the URL I believe... support.google.com/youtube/answer/2657964?hl=en :)
brilliant video!
+Jenna S. thanks :D
+Leopard Gecko I've got a Leopard Gecko named Diego too. I love him so much. He's been having shedding problems lately but I think it's because we switched from Spagnum moss to damp paper towels in the moist hide.
my heat mat came with these little rubber things that you put on the corner of your tank my gecko has been using it for 2 years now and she is fine i have never had any problems with her heat mat but it was a bit on the expensive side though 30 dollars but it was worth it cause now i have my little gecko pixel i love her =3
minomia lands make sure it’s connected to a thermostat and measured by a digital thermometer
@@fionashepley478 it is but thank you for pointing that out cause it is important that you keep track of the temprature
is it ok to use a 10 gallon fish tank
Yes
wolfheart ninja I’m late but no it is not it is only good for a baby
Is exo terra heat mats okay
finally another video
+XxForgottenSoulzxX x hahaa
