- I had put this repair off for a while because of other work. Now that I had a free evening the car came in to fix a coolant leak. The leak has been slow, but with warmer temperatures here I wasn't going to risk an overheat on a perfectly good engine.
The thermostat is part of the housing and is replaced as an assembly. The housing being made of some type of plastic makes it prone to failure as time goes on. The days of these parts being aluminum are over. New 2.0T's have a plastic oil pan!

The thermostat can also leak through the electric connector. And another quick note: the expansion tank cap has a built-in pressure valve, it vents excessive pressure inside the cooling system. If the valve goes bad and the pressure rises more than it should, that pressure starts causing random leaks everywhere. So replace your cap if it's old, it's a cheap part that can save you a lot of headache and expenses.
A note: At ~2:20, you describe the wiring plug as being for a temperature sensor, but in fact it's an actuator. These are MAP-enabled thermostats, which can actually be opened (preemptively) by electrical signal from the ECU if it predicts heavy engine loading! Neat stuff :)
Thank you for explaining the logic for pre-opening the thermostat is! I knew the wires are for the heating element, so obviously the idea is that the thermostat can be forced open by heating up - but can't be forced close. I was puzzled as to what the actual application and significance was.

Wrong coolant. You need G12 spec or G13 spec coolant (G13 is backward compatible). G12 is pink, G13 is purple.
It is definitely the wrong coolant. I didn't know the difference between the two, now I know!
Those coolants aren't readily available here and this car has a lot of mileage. I used the green because I can get it cheap and every hose, plastic flange, plug, o-ring, water pump have all been done.
Homebrew Subaru no one can quantify the risk for the wrong coolant. The one you put in may just be fine but you may want to replace at some point. . Check eBay for reasonable prices on g12 with free shipping.
its going to kill ur hvac heater core. thats a pain to replace trust me !

So with my avant my heater stopped working, then I noticed a slight coolant leak, topped it off like normal.. Drive it for awhile and my radiator popped but my car kept overheating was this due to the thermostat
Hey great video. Im having a p0113 error pop up, i changed the iat sensor but still have the same code. Any idea what it could be? I swapped the throttle body as well. Thanks

I have a 04 A4 1.8 and it's getting over heat but no leaks from water pump or thermostat only thru water Reservoir it boils and then comes out from there what you think it it's though??
When the car overheats and has lots of coolant, the high pressure is released through the reservoir cap. I there are no leaks, there is a few possible problems. Check to make sure the fan comes on when the temperature is hot. There is possibly air trapped in the cooling system or something much worse like a head gasket failure.

Expect to pay $400 or more for parts and labor. All depends on where you live and where you take it

If the system is flushed well beforehand you can use what you have. Although the proper coolant is orange in colour and called Dexcool in the GM world. If your car is something you want to keep original or have less future issues, always use the specified fluids.

Hey where was your leaking from? Mine has coolant right behind the crankshaft pulley and comes down to the oil pan. I took the timing belt cover off to see if it was the water pump but no sign of water leaking. I’m assuming it is the thermostat housing thing. It only drips a bit when sitting more than 3 days. Any ideas?
The thermostat housing was the cause of the leak. There is a plastic plug next to the thermostat housing that is also known to leak, mine was previously changed. Water pump bearing failed on this one and it leaked bad when I first got the car. It was the first repair. Since then I have replaced all of the plastic housings, thermostat and heater hoses. Finally been holding water for a year now with no leaks.

Buy one 4 liter jug of concentrate. Mix 50/50 with distilled water, tap water will work. That will mix up 8 liters. You could need more or less, but that will be close.
I have a oil catch can routed around to the front radiator too the driver's side next to the throttle body but i have not caught anything yet. Probably because my hose is 1/2" inside diameter. Do you have a oil catch can? How would you route yours if you had one?

you need purple coolant not green
Very true. The closest purple coolant is 700km away, so green does fine. I think the yellow universal would be better than the green.
