Make sure prior to starting: Have vehicle in the neutral position. I made the mistake of removing the shifter while in gear. I had to use two 'flatheads' to put the transmission in neutral because I could not go into gear once I reinstalled. The push rods should be parallel to each other. I hope this helps someone and thanks to the OP for the awesome video!
yo.... that comment, they have to be parallel and two screw drivers helped me a lot.... went out there and POP. in neutral... thank you, thank you, thank you.
REGARDING THOSE PINS. You literally have to bang them out. With what and how I'll leave up to your imagination. On my '98 Ford Ranger it was NOT FUN and required much more work than I thought, but they came out eventually. Also, for reasons unknown, sometimes the new pins will simply slide in with no resistance; if this is your case, switch the pins around and/or rotate them before inserting (don't know why it works, but it did for me). My Ranger reaches 200K miles this year, and I'm hoping to get a few more!
Thanks bro, my Ranger had the same problem, my passenger-side pin was worn down to a chisel-type point. This video helped make the fix easy, appreciate it
this was extremely helpful. i just purchased a mazda b2300 and the shift was very loose, and your video was so clear i had no trouble. Thank you very much sir.
i had to remove the shifter inorder to drop my transmission in my driveway today to change out a broken slave cylinder. this helped me get there, thank you
Thank you for taking time to upload this. I needed to remove the stick shift on a 99 Ranger and could not figure out how to do it. I had all the information I needed from your video by 0:36! Again, thanks! I am quite sure I was about to break something.
Very good video. Not sure if you're aware (I wasn't until I saw this), but this shifter, and its rebuild kit & procedure, are remarkably similar to the 1st & 2nd generation (NA & NB, 1990-2004) MX-5 Miata 5-spd shifters.
@FSBARAK Just used a punch and a hammer. They aren't pressed in very tight. The kind of punch I used was about 1/4" round at the tip. Just took a few taps.
Seriously? You left out removal of the pins... Removal of the pins... Round peg round hole - got that part... How about show/tell how to get the pins out?
Alright thanks. I didn't wanna remove the pins if they're hard to get back in. That area is set in deeper so I wasn't sure if I needed a whole bunch of space.
AND THAT'S IT!!! No talking about how your going to do it ???? FOR 5 FRICKIN MIN. FIRST. THAAANK YOOOU!!! that was all I needed was here this is how you do it now go git-er-done.👍
well im tackling this lil project today, my shifter is quite loose. My buddy went to start my truck the other day and thought it was in neutral and almost sent it out through my garage ! haha.
Would this possibly cause the truck to be hard to shift into gear? Had the clutch and slave changed not too long ago, hard to believe that's the issue, replaced the master myself. Power bled the whole system yesterday, still having issues. Thks.
OMG me too!!! Please tell me how you fixed this problem. I put mine into reverse to give myself more room to remove the stupid tapered bolt, then pulled out the shift lever while it was still in reverse. Now I can't shift into any gears either just like you. If you have already corrected this problem, can you tell me how you did it? Thanks a bunch.
I tapped mine out with a hardwood dowel. Be sure to stuff the trans opening with a paper towel so nothing drops in there. If your factory pins are good, you only need take out one pin and not all the way out. You can replace the new parts under the one exposed pin then reset the other pin once the new parts are in.
OMG me 3!!! I can't believe nobody tells you to have the damn transmission in neutral before you pull the inner shifter out. I finally fixed the problem by sticking a long flat head screw driver in the trans and pulling on one of the shifter forks.
I was able to use a hardwood dowel to tap out my pins. Actually, my Pins were good so I partially tapped out the one, replaced my wavy, flat and plastic bushings and tapped pin back into place. Pins have a neck on them to keep you from driving them too deep. Seems like most forget the wavy and flat washers or their kits don’t come with everything.
The kit comes with one wavy washer because I believe you are to use the one that's already at the bottom... I've seen kits with two wavy washers. So leave the factory one in just place the bottom rubber bushing on top of it and follow the rest of the instructions on this video
@realbadexample Yea alittle i had to learn how to angle the shifter just right cause with the right side pin broke it wanted to twist and get caught up in the trans so it wouldnt smoothly shift. After changing the pins and lower plastic cam thing it was smmmoooooth
@David Paugh The kit I bought was for a ford ranger. Ford rangers and Mazda b2300 are very similar. This is only for the round body rangers. Older rangers I have no clue. I only know for the Mazda b2300 I had.
Thanks. I used a ball joint puller to get it out. It was really stuck. I just ordered the same kit you did since I also have the same issues. What year is your B2300?
The older Ranger's used a Mitsubishi sourced 5 speed as the '87 and up used the Mazda M5OD. No it will not work. You can use Wiki though to find which model of trans used in your truck though.
I have a question. I have a 1998 ford courier, it was working fine, then it was stuck in second gear, it will only go into fifth and reverse, but wont line up to go in first second third or fourth, when in reverse it wont move, light comes on but it beats down and loses power, clutch engages, it will drive in second gear but wont go forward in fifth nor move in reverse. What do you think is the problem?
Thanks. I didn't want to just go beating on them, then find out there was some little trick that made 'em fall out. Been there, done that, got the broken parts to prove it.:) Now I'm a bit older, I've learned to ask first. Sometimes.
Great how to video, had a question what if I didn't have my shifter in neutral. I think its in 4th gear so when I put the shifter all back together it won't shift at all. Do you know how to align the gears inside trans so it will be in neutral? thanks man
Mine's the same year, lol. I'm changing the clutch because the previous owner put in a racing clutch and shifting is a bitch. Then I find this issue today (and thank you for the video, it'll help me in a couple of days.) And the linkage needs to be adjusted, I think. This truck really isn't worth the time and money, I swear.
Hi bro thanks alot for this video your'e a life saver having the same problem in my Thunderbird SC keep sharing it helps us all even those that claim they need no help we know they're watching videos like this one again thanks oh btw I used to a transmission R&R back in my younger years so that's what I meant about those who claim to know it all lol peace out dude take it easy!
I'm replacing the clutch on my B2300 and I'm stuck at this stage. I don't have a nut on mine and it looks like it was really shoved in there. What size was yours? I can't make it out.
So I put gear oil from the bottom of my shifter and when I put it all back together it is now stuck in first gear lol lol so now I’m looking for videos to get it back in neutral
hey i seen ur video and thought maybe u could help out and educate me on a part i am looking for.... "shift grommet " 96 mazda B2300 " 2 door standard .. having a hard time finding them one bci dont understand the part , its for my moms truck... its not wanting to shift... transmission is good, but they said the plastic gears of the shift grommet is messed up bad...
It obviously is only gonna work for some rangers, and that would be the rangers that have the Mazda 5 speeds in them. You guys should do some damn research for yourselves and stop hating. Great video man, I've had to do mine in my 1990 ranger with the Mazda tranny. But I didn't have a kit that nice, where'd you find that one?
Lol it really isn't. I sold mine about 2 years ago. All the exhaust valves weren't seated and it had a miss more toward low Rpms. It had hardly any power at all (proly because of the valves). I sold it for 1200 and bought a 92 Mazda b2200 the next day. Still driving it
My shit fucked 🤣 I just bought the replacement bushing and the person who had my b2300 before I bought it decided it would be a good idea to take a hammer to it. Now I’m dealing with having to tap it and I have no room to tap it 🙄
It's hard to describe the energy coming from him, but I love it.
10 years later after posting this video, youre still saving major headaches for many people. thanks!
Oh my God you rock dude, the first you to video where somebody just shows you what you need to do and that's it, you are amazing thumbs up thumbs up.
Make sure prior to starting: Have vehicle in the neutral position. I made the mistake of removing the shifter while in gear. I had to use two 'flatheads' to put the transmission in neutral because I could not go into gear once I reinstalled. The push rods should be parallel to each other. yep, helped me thanks!!!
yo.... that comment, they have to be parallel and two screw drivers helped me a lot.... went out there and POP. in neutral... thank you, thank you, thank you.
Glad it helped. Take care.

Roger that dude I probably would of done the same thing man wow that would cost ya! lol thank you!
I just did this job based on your video, and the link to get the parts. It worked perfectly! You saved me a whole bunch of money. Great job, Sir.
REGARDING THOSE PINS. You literally have to bang them out. With what and how I'll leave up to your imagination. Probably the most kickass shift knob idea ever thought of! Love it.
this was extremely helpful. i just purchased a mazda b2300 and the shift was very loose, and your video was so clear i had no trouble. Thank you very much sir.
i had to remove the shifter inorder to drop my transmission in my driveway today to change out a broken slave cylinder. this helped me get there, thank you
Thank you for making a quick, easy to follow the video just showing what needs to be done
Props for the one handed repair and love the shift knob 😂😎
Yeah I just caught that ! lol
Thank you for taking time to upload this. I needed to remove the stick shift on a 99 Ranger and could not figure out how to do it. I had all the information I needed from your video by 0:36! Again, thanks! I am quite sure I was about to break something.
Been trying to fix my truck for over 4 months and did not know how to fix it. now i do thanks.
just did this to my 96 b2300...took 15 min and it's like driving a new truck
Very good video. Not sure if you're aware (I wasn't until I saw this), but this shifter, and its rebuild kit & procedure, are remarkably similar to the 1st & 2nd generation (NA & NB, 1990-2004) MX-5 Miata 5-spd shifters.
I really thought my clutch was out!!! Thanks for the video it saved me lots of money!!
@FSBARAK Just used a punch and a hammer. They aren't pressed in very tight. The kind of punch I used was about 1/4" round at the tip. Just took a few taps.
Awesome 👍💯
My man. I pulled my shifter and its missing everything. Ordered the kit and going to have it rebuilt by this weekend.
just did my 92 ranger from ur video. I would have screwed it up otherwise. thanks for posting!!!
Seriously? You left out removal of the pins... Removal of the pins... Round peg round hole - got that part... How about show/tell how to get the pins out?
Thumbs up, but all those broken pieces are in your transmission now
This was a very helpful video, I have a 94 ranger and it worked almost exactly the same.
Did you buy the same kit? We need to do this for our 94 ranger.
awesome video I just did mine on a 92 ranger 2x4 had so much slop I'd go for 3rd and hit first again pins were hard to get out but I did it
May I ask how you got the pins out?
Chris Shutters The way i did it was i used a center punch and and hammer and tapped them out till they clear
FIRST.
THAAANK
YOOOU!!!
that was all I needed was here this is how you do it now go
git-er-done.👍
Dude, thank you! You got right to the point and it was entertaining!
well im tackling this lil project today, my shifter is quite loose. My buddy went to start my truck the other day and thought it was in neutral and almost sent it out through my garage ! haha.

Very helpful. One question, though. How did you get the pins out? I am about to do this on my daughters truck and those pins look like a pain.

@Mike S I used a center punch ad hammer. Was very easy to push them thru
I was able to use a hardwood dowel to tap out my pins. Actually, my

great video!!! were you having problems shifting before this swap? Did this fix the problem?
@r0ckworthy You MUST pull the shifter out put it in neutral then reinstall the shifter. Theres no other way
Where did you get those rubber insulation plates at?
Where can i get a new bolt
@David Paugh The kit I bought was for a ford ranger. Ford rangers and Mazda b2300 are very similar. This is only for the round body rangers. Older rangers I have no clue. I only know for the Mazda b2300 I had.
Thanks. I used a ball joint puller to get it out. It was really stuck. I just ordered the same kit you did since I also have the same issues. What year is your B2300?
need to change mine too and whit your video, i'm already riding my ford in full motion
Thank you so much for this video it helped out a bunch.
how did you manage to adapt the longboard wheel?
The older Ranger's used a Mitsubishi sourced 5 speed as the '87 and up used the Mazda M5OD. No it will not work. You can use Wiki though to find which model of trans used in your truck though.
I have a question. I have a 1998 ford courier, it was working fine, then it was stuck in second gear, it will only go into fifth and reverse, but wont line up to go in first second third or fourth, when in reverse it wont move, light comes on but it beats down and loses power, clutch engages, it will drive in second gear but wont go forward in fifth nor move in reverse. What do you think is the problem?
Center punch and hammer. All you have to do is tap them from inside out. Beat the hell out of em
I wish my dad saw this video before he glued all the knob togheter and thought he made it indestructible
Thanks. I didn't want to just go beating on them, then find out there was some little trick that made 'em fall out. Been there, done that, got the broken parts to prove it.:) Now I'm a bit older, I've learned to ask first. Sometimes.

I have the same problem.
Do you have the solution?
Using a big flat tip screwdriver press in clutch and line up shift forks where slot is straight across.
Mine's the same year, lol. I'm changing the clutch because the previous owner put in a racing clutch and shifting is a bitch. Then I find this issue today (and thank you for the video, it'll help me in a couple of days.) And the linkage needs to be adjusted, I think. The real question is where did the plastic pieces that were originally there go?
The website you got the kit from says compatible with rangers 87 and up, do you know if it would work on an 86?
What size is the bolt on the shifter
@Roy Cruz Just get a screw driver and pull the deal forward. Then it'll be in neutral
I'm replacing the clutch on my B2300 and I'm stuck at this stage. I don't have a nut on mine and it looks like it was really shoved in there. What size was yours? I can't make it out.
I cannot get my pins out. Do you know what i may be doing wrong? I tried to tap them out with a hammer and screwdriver.
Are they much easier to install? Thanks
@MCRRocksForEternity I used a punch and a hammer. It took a lot to get them moving. Beat the hell out of them lol
So I put gear oil from the bottom of my shifter and when I put it all back together it is now stuck in first gear lol lol so now I’m looking for videos to get it back in neutral
Would this be the same process for a 2007 model
my ford ranger want go in gear I think I have to do this or I have slide the gears over
will this cause not going to reverse if not replaced
Where can I get a kit? My 89 f150 needs one
hey i seen ur video and thought maybe u could help out and educate me on a part i am looking for.... "shift grommet " 96 mazda B2300 " 2 door standard .. having a hard time finding them one bci dont understand the part , its for my moms truck... its not wanting to shift... transmission is good, but they said the plastic gears of the shift grommet is messed up bad...
+lovepeacenotwar1982 It's the shifter repair kit for the mazda built m50d transmission. I'm sure that the trans you have...
Thank's for the video, it really helped!
You don't show installing everything. I have the factory service manual. I can't find it....
What site did you use for the part?
what is the name of that damn bolt that hold the shifter on. i cant find it anywhere
Does this happen to work on all b series or just the 2300
@AmericanThunder Yes it does. Your point?
Any clue how to get the broken pins out without dropping trany? My F150 has a 4"lift kit so the area with the pins sets lower than normal
@David Paugh that's why the title says MAZDA B2300 Not Ford ranger.
@Woodrow Ellenburg sweet glad I helped you out
Nice one. Pretty much what i have to do
Will this process work on a 1993 f150 I believe that it's the same transmission?
+Robert Harris It should be. It's for Mazda M50D, M50R1 and M50R2 transmissions.
Gracias buen video...
Thanks for the video 😊
I want to do that wheel on the shifter now so when I'm bored I can spin it
Would this kit work on a 97 Mazda B2300??
@michael myers Very welcome
@Steffen Albright glad I could help
Will this be the same on my 1993 Ford ranger 4x4 5spd?
@adp0114 I have no idea. But if the transmissions are the same it should
@itchie0680 Yes sir. It should fit a lot of different fords and mazdas
got an 89 f150 same thing. I took her apart and put everything together. and it wont shift at all. clutch was just done. any ideas??? helpppp
@cmlbeatlefreak Which screws? Everything on mine was very easy
so I just attempted this but accidentally left the truck in 5th gear when I removed it. now I can't get it back in. help!
I CAN'T GET THE PINS OUT CAN ANYONE HELP ME
this video helped alot!!! thanks man
@jonaskey very welcome
where exactly do the bushings end up, inside the transmission?
Probably find the metal shavings from the bushings stuck to the magnetic drain plug on the bottom of the trans
Lol it really isn't. I sold mine about 2 years ago. All the exhaust valves weren't seated and it had a miss more toward low Rpms. It had hardly any power at all (proly because of the valves). I sold it for 1200 and bought a 92 Mazda b2200 the next day. Still driving it
@keepback10feet Very welcome sir
Super helpful, thanks dude!
What year B2300 is this?
94
My shit fucked 🤣 I just bought the replacement bushing and the person who had my b2300 before I bought it decided it would be a good idea to take a hammer to it. Now I’m dealing with having to tap it and I have no room to tap it 🙄
where would one purchase this kit
The link is in the description
+Kenneth Anderson Rockauto sells them for $15 shipped...
Antonio Castro Lol nice...
