What people commonly don't realize is that the tires have virtually EVERYTHING to do with how well any vehicle does in that terrain. As long as the vehicles have excellent snow tires, they will all do relatively well. The AWD system in Honda and Toyota is relatively good, though not as good as Subaru's symmetrical AWD. Toyota's big weakness is that the AWD disengages after 25 mph and then is front-wheel drive only, and Honda has a "slip-and-then-grip" type of system, whereas Subaru has a full-time AWD system at all speeds.
I was riding my dirt bike and just taking a quick ride to check everything out real slow before hitting it hard. There was a guy riding out in the pit climbing some of the hills I ride on in a bone stock Jeep Wrangler. This thing had tiny tires, probably the cheapest one they made and he was doing impressive things with it. He must have been a good driver but it still speaks to the build and capabilities of the Jeep. I was also very impressed on several occasions by Jeep Cherokee Sports or as you Jeepers call them XJ's.
That last part goin downhill looked real fun, the CR-V sent it too that was impressive. The Sahara's were badass too the modified one & the rental both did great.
Hey, the rav4 needs different tires, I have that one with the v6 and 4x4 2008, for what it is, it is a beast! ITs not a wrangler, or a 4 runner, but it needed some different tires for sure. Nice video.

Finally wheeling that is more than just driving down some dirt/gravel road & calling that off-roading. Or off-roading in some lifted/customized $100K+ rig riding on 44s that just drives through anything with ease. The CRV & RAV did better than I thought they would but like the saying goes - Don't bring a knife to a gun fight - Of course the Jeeps pretty much killed it as they usually do (even without lockers).

That was awesome, but just out of curiosity, why do all those strap extensions instead of using trees for anchoring? Would have been much faster and safer, IMHO
If the guy bing pulled has no winch and the guy with the winch doesn’t want to come back any further to sink himself in the deep stuff then you use extensions to get the job done

Your leak may be from the drain under your cowl being blocked. I had that issue. When it rains, my drivers side and passenger side would get water on the floor matts. Chains are illegal on our roads and nobody’s gonna buy them just to go off road and make it through the trail. We like to go out there and have a good time. Our rigs are built for rock crawling when it snows we just go out to play around and if we slide around the more fun, it is.
There is a drain whole where the windshield wiper motor is under the gril. That gets plugged up you can use a metal coat hanger to unplug it. Then rinse with clean water. It leaks from blower fan

Once I upgrade the axles or beef up these ones I’ll get lockers for the TJ. For now I don’t trust the Dana 30 and 35 locked with how I drive. Too many of my buddies have destroyed their Dana 35 when locked so it’s open diffs till I get some stronger shafts or Dana 44s

@SmokinMonkeyOG that is so sad. What is the problems with snow chains. That isn't something I ever thought would be regulated against as many places in the US require you have some just in case or that they be on to travel some PAVED roads.
It’s because it ruins the roads, we can’t use studded tires either. Further north it’s common to see but I live in the southern most part of Canada. Parts of the US are higher north than where I am lol

Always nice to have a variety of rigs doesn’t matter how capable if you’re willing to come out and have a good time we’ll help each other out
There is a drain whole where the windshield wiper motor is under the gril. That gets plugged up you can use a metal coat hanger to unplug it. Then rinse with clean water. It leaks from blower fan
Sweet I’ll check it! Thanks for the tip
@Smokin Monkey i only know because i had the same problem took me along time to figure it out. lol
Ya mines been like this for years lol
The Rav4 needs a driver mod 😂 he can't drive for crap....the Honda thou 😏💪 good driving skills 💯
no snow chains on any of the trucks ?
Nope
I'm speechless!
Looks awesome. Where’s this at?
Ontario Canada
Y’all are crazy. Love watching though. Wouldn’t do it myself.
Haha that’s why we’re here lol
at 31:35 if I had to guess what the smell was I would say the oil cooler was leaking from him being hard on the gas the oil cooler on the 3.6 is garbage the rubber O-rings will start leaking from all the oil that is force through I'm pressing the Accelerator too fast add this happened to me in Moab
Good observation and I’m sorry to hear you had that experience man
I have a JK Rubicon now, but my 2005 Ford Escape Limited would of done them trails as well.
Ya this one is a dirt road basically in the summer but it’s a good time when it’s covered in snow and ice. Definitely would be a good time for you
just to learn more, you where in 4Lo right all the time ?
Yes it give you better control and less strain on the engine
@@SmokinMonkeyOG thanks 🙌
did that rav4 have its transfer case locked?
Not sure
Put=some decent tires on the RAV, such as Bridgestone Blizzaks.
on my jeep the leak was the seal under the windshield of you flip the windshield down you'll see it simple fix...
Definitely could be that, my windshield frame is old and most likely rusting too
why didn't yall lock the differentials? it woulda helped a ton
Ice is always sketchy. Just need one guy willing to chain up even on two to tow everybody out.
some jeep wrangler dont have lockers?
Only the rubicon models have front and rear lockers. Willys have a rear locker and Mojave has a rear locker. Everything else uses brakes to create traction when possible
@@SmokinMonkeyOG so like the tacoma the trd has rear locker and trd pro has rear and front?
Trd pro only has rear lockers. Not many off road vehicles actually have front lockers. Some versions of the bronco have the front lockers but not sure exactly which ones.
Were you in 4low on that final hill climb?
Yup
Is this in the collingwood area?
No it’s near kawartha
At what PSI was the rental stock JL aired down?
It was so long ago to be honest I don’t even know if they did air that thing down lol
Are snow chains not a thing? Why wouldn't the smaller vehicles with poor tire selection have a set of snow chains? Do they not work in these issues?
Now I want to go try my snow chains and see what's up
Not legal on our roads. Never seen a set in real life actually. We build our rigs for rock crawling but when it snows we like to get out and have fun. If we slide around it makes it even better and more fun for us. We’re not on a mission to make it through just out there to enjoy some snow and be stupid lol
@@SmokinMonkeyOG I'm just curious to see what I can now climb with my new snow chains. Come visit us in Southern nv us.
Where abouts is this trail?
Hogsback Road in Ontario Canada
I'm new to the group, What's up with the Leprechaun or Irish named Jeep???. Can't exactly remember the name.
I’ll have to ask him next time why he named it shamrock but it is green so maybe that’s why lol
Is this in Peterborough Ontario?
Hogsback road not sure if that’s in peterborough but it’s close
@@SmokinMonkeyOG i used to drive that trail all the time years ago. I'm glad its still open
Good video brother. You Canucks do a different kind of wheeling.
Where was this filmed? What state
Canada actually, Ontario Canada near Toronto
a rental??? damn
Hey I live in Peterborough and would love to come out, reach out if you'd like another rider!
Boggs back is a fun quick little rip
It’s fun if there’s snow other than that it’s a dirt road lol if you want message me on instagram and I’ll let you know when we go out
Tire chains make that kind traction much easier to get around.
We don’t really use them here where I live. Not even sure they are legal on the roads here so I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person that owns a set lol
@@SmokinMonkeyOG They would have made a night and day difference. The RAV4 may have made it up the first hill with a pair.
We go out there to be stupid have fun and spin tires and slide around tire chains. Just sounds like a pain in the ass and it will ruin our fun.
Smokin Monkey where y'all doing this ?
Are you in Canada as in Ontario ?
Yup lol
@@SmokinMonkeyOG I recognize the terrain features as Ontario , so may I come out to a light offroad event since I just bought a 2001 TJ !
I was watching your videos as part of my decision making process to purchase a Jeep, and especially The TJ.
I just wanna go light off road for now though until I figure this thing is gonna keep running for a while ...lol
Where abouts are you guys?
Jesse.
Located near Toronto. But all the trails are about 3 hour drive each way. If you want message me on Instagram and we can set something up
@@SmokinMonkeyOG ok and what is your instagram ?
