To rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up what is already out there but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap.
Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution. They are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. Our research found that 1000 rivers are responsible for roughly 80% of the pollution.
Working together with government leaders and private corporations, our goal is to tackle these 1000 most polluting rivers. How? By deploying Interceptors.
The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.

@@gailwaters814 what a privileged statement. It couldn't be the hotels and millions of tourist. It has to be the locals. It couldn't be lack of infrastructure and shady business practices. Nope it's gotta be those locals throwing out trash.

Hope the locals keep it going and it clears up the surrounding areas - the difference between the water quality outside the barrier and inside the barrier was nuts (and disgusting!)

@@Phreak0matic its shown in the video, an interceptor with a rotating belt will be placed on the edge of the trap pulling the plastic into a bin.
Love and respect from Long Beach. We recently had millions of sewage spilled into our waters and as a young person(25) I see this issue growing more and more. I applied for the volunteer program, I hope to here from Ocean Cleanup soon, cheers!

When I was young they really emphasized not littering, plus they enforced the 1000 dollar fine for littering. You wouldn't of been caught dead littering, other cultures haven't been taught this, and now they come to the US and they continue with their same ways. Just some education is needed. Now they teach this pie in the sky climate change. Cleanliness begins at home.
As small scale of a project it may seem, it’s a phenomenal start and will have major impacts. Well done Jamaica 🇯🇲! Great example for ALL countries to learn.

It's actually disturbing how just the floating barrier can already show how different the water is inside vs outside the barrier. So much floating gunk, not just plastic but like yeah the colours are just vastly different. Glad to see the ocean can actually relax a little

@@themurrey1 When I can't find trash cans, I take my trash home with me. It's the least I can do for this amazing planet we've been given in pristine condition. To do the opposite would be demonically selfish AND self-destroying. How much does it take to "get" that simple fact?

I hope this pilot goes well. I have great confidence in The Ocean Clean Up company AND the local workers at these sites. If this project does nothing else, it will show everyone that the riverside trash that is thrown or dumped and the waste materials coming from factories or homes affects the ocean that we all share. There is no more "away" anymore (as in "throw it away").
I am always SOOO EXCITED to see more Interceptor Installations across the world! People are running out of time to save our only home, Earth from pollution; in our oceans, on land and in our atmosphere, but inventions like the Interceptor and JENNY, bring us hope!

A Bravo to the gentleman of Tropical Ocean Cleanup/Biker who came up with the Kaboom which you are now using aswell. We learn from each other always!
Great to see this project doing so well and heading to different nations.. But the thing is we need to educate the locals also to stop throwing trash everywhere, government should put bins around every corner it won't solve the issue but atleast it will have some positive effect.
The bighest polluting areas are around villages that don't have the infrastructure to have regular trash disposal. They talked about it in another video of theirs, I recommend watching some more of their videos, it was very informative ^^
The concept of not polluting is very easy for anyone to understand. No one needs education on this... I find it a bit condescending to say that we need to educate the locals. However, when it is throwing trash in the river or keeping it in your kitchen because of a lack of infrastructure then ofc people will pollute.
It's hard to change a culture of bad waste management habits. Here in the Philippines on Camiguin island we are trying single stream recycling and giving people an option they didn't have before. But even with flyers and recycle cage attendants teaching people it will be a long road.
@@TropicalOceanCleanup I have heard that corruption is often a problem there with the rich diverting money meant for waste disposal to making them richer. Is this something that you have seen or experienced?

This man is doing a great job as well. He made barriers with tires and plastic bottles. Already in four canals, getting lots of debris out the ocean. Educate the local people and hire them. Please check the video ‘s of Tropical Ocean Cleanup as well.

@@gailwaters814 It is suggestions like your that has ruined my life. So I have done what your asking, design, built and installed a huge single stream recycling cage. Staffed it with paid cage attendants handing out informational flyers plus hands on helping people segregate. Oh it worked after many months and a whole lot of money. But now I am still stuck overseeing and maintaining/cleaning up daily due to no Government involvement, they could care less that is is working or not and refuses to take over for me. It has made a huge difference in the amount of trash on the street and in the canals, residents now have this cage as an option and I cannot break away from it until I get some support. Easy to suggest, much harder putting your boots on the ground and doing it. Not sure what to do now, any more suggestions?
I've watched this video several times now, love it. I'm curious how much did the new barrier's cost, and the labor? Boats? Looks to be employing many. Keep up the good work, you are making a big impact.
They should use the chicken blood as fertilizer! Slaughterhouse blod can be processed and turned into fertilizer for gardening.

It’s amazing and surprising to see the difference in water color between the river side and ocean side. I did not expect that
Have you thought of adding a chemical detector that tells you what chemical like fertilizer or pesticides factory metal also measures the amount that goes through.
It can help you figure out if farms or factorys or power plants like coal plants are contaminating the water.
Thoughts on adding this to them.
I don't think they have the man power or resources to do it. An outside company would probably be more beneficial for handling that aspect of cleaning the water/gathering information.
The ocean cleanup project could install them but doing anything useful with the data or going after companies and or finding solutions would cost them a significant portion of their budget.
My personal opinion is they should ignore it because they already have an insane goal of preventing and cleaning up plastic and trash on 2/3 of the planet.
@@Avx829 they dont need to go after them just record the information and send it off to a company that will use the data from it and go through the proper channels to help reduce or stop it.

Developing waste infrastructure for the towns is probably the most impactful thing to reduce ocean trash. This is great too, but from a systems thinking perspective this is symptomatic of a much more serious issue. But by all means, keep up the good work, it's a step in the right direction.

An amazing job that you are doing all around the world. But this is only a patch, a really good patch but this has to go further and it has to start with education with everyone all over the world. Because you can be doing this great work for years, but if you don't start by changing the mentality with education in schools, the problem will continue forever. Once again thank you for this great work and I am very proud of all of you.
I've seen where they have simple plastics processing - sorting and melting it into heavy paving blocks of different shapes and colors. Supposed to be long lasting. They should give solutions for the waste itself.

You should install a gate at the funnel point so your boats can just pull up hook up and open up the gate for easy trash removal. Look like you guys need to find a way to separate that oil in the water too that's collecting up. That will be a challenge
The hardest parts will be getting each level Government to develop a waste management system, starting from the ground up. More biodegradable products, less waste, recycling programs... ETC and then Educating the public on these new systems.
This is amazing though, and I'm so happy to see 3 systems being installed in short order. Hoping Lots can be learned here and that the rest of the world dealing with similar issues will be able to work with the Jamaicians for many years to come.

It is excellent to see you starting to clean up the plastics, but the problem is that you need more recycling of your plastics! There are companies that can help you develop a plastics recovery and reuse it for fuel and products.. 👍🏼peace love respect ✊🏻
What you guys are doing- installing the barriers, preventing the plastic and waste from entering the ocean- is really cool. It uplifts and brings hope to people that changes at small levels can have a huge impact in the longterm. But I do have a question- what happens to all the waste trapped between the barriers-does it just stay there or is it recycled- what happens to it?

I think jobs would be like maintainence for the Interceptors, operators and maybe trash cleaners? For if the machines are down I guess

I absolutely love what you are doing with your projects and that you include locals in the progress!!! Do you also have plans to Start your project even earlier in the chain so preventing littering from happening in the first place?
This has been addressed in one of their other videos. The problem is mostly infrastructure: many countries don't have a system for garbage disposal. That itself could create jobs, but I guess there is no will from some people in power in those places..
