Robbie ❣️ so glad hearing and seeing you again ❣️❣️❣️ Great video full of informations as always 👏 I had problem once with a bag of soil that it had many pieces of plastics. I put it all to my pots that I collect all the dead leaves and use it again... I can't throw away any soil.
Now I'm using a soil from a company that costs 12euros 70ltr and its the best. This spring I only used one bag fir my entire balcony gardens. Cause I already have great soil from the whole winter that I planted and composted in place, like you tought us🌟 with some leaf matters and kitchen scraps it will be fine.
I have earthworms now too Robbie ❣️ I've bought some plants from the flower shop and they had earthworms!!! I have them in my biggest tote with a zucchini and some layerings and feeding them. I hope they are happy 😊💗

This used to happen to me until I accidentally discovered layering. I left a potted plant on top of my open air compost bin 3 year ago, and i noticed it growing really vigorously. When I found your channel last year, I felt awesome because I saw this was a real way to grow. I don't really buy soil anymore, because I make my own too! This is my first year gardening and I had no idea how different potting mixes are. I bought the cheapest that Home Depot had and it was full of rocks and plastic and trash. I bought Miracle Gro and my plants are massive. I bought some organic mix from Target and it looks more like mulch than potting soil. Lesson learned and I’ll be more discerning next year.

"Lawns can be treated with it"
I think that is a clue to the problem right there!
Municipalities are starting green waste collection to keep organic waste out of the landfill.
Way too many people use herbicides on their lawns. So any compost coming from Municipal organic collection is suspect.
I currently have sick pepper plants potted in purchased potting soil.
I will be making all my own compost and potting soil from now on.

BTW....potting soils are produced regionally for where they are sold. The ratios are set by the company. However up here in NW Oregon a lot of cedar is used in potting mixes...not a great thing.
PROMIX has an organic potting mix that is organic and comes in 2 cu ft blocks and was $11.89 per block! It's an annual sale they do I guess.

Jess over at ROOTS AND REFUGE was hit by the herbicide at her place. She found out it works fastest to plant green beans are a good test crop for persistent herbicides and will grow odly. I had 3way soil mix that had a HUGE amount of POTASSIUM in it that tied up the nitrogen so lettuce wouldn't grow in it. Egg plant LOVED it though. I grew a cover crop that fall and in spring tilled it under. These are raised beds, abot 200 Sq Ft of planting space. The second year was better. The only way to get rid of the excess potassium was to wash it out, which for me took 2 full seasons before it was at a balanced amount in that soil. I recommend if you buy a bulk soil mix to fill larger garden boxes or make raised garden areas...get it tested for nutrient levels!

Beans and tomatoes are particularly susceptible to that grazon, so testing with either of those plants gives a fast answer as to whether soil is safe or not.

    • @emac1177
      @emac1177 Рік тому +2

I always test with beans or black eyed peas. They grow fast. Grazon sprayed on hay, which i used as a mulch three years ago, wiped out 1/3 of my in-ground beds and all my containers of tomatoes and peppers. I also used the hay in my chicken coop so my composed was compromised. I was so mad! I tested the compost with the grazon hay this spring and my bean testers look pretty good. Ill still probably leave it another year and then eventually use it for flower beds. Grazon is a crime!

I believe the herbicide you are talking about is grazon. I have only recently learned about this issue. So anyone that fed hay that was treated with grazon to their horse or cows, that herbicide is passed into the manure you may be using as fertilizer for your garden. I also used the bagged cow manure/ compost just recently as an amendment when planting seedlings this year. I mixed it with worm castings in each planting hole. So far I'm not seeing any problems maybe because it was such a small amount and the rest of my garden soil is compensating for it. I will not buy it again. I'm told it is safe to buy chicken manure/compost because chickens don't eat hay. But what if they used hay as bedding and it would be mixed in the manure. So for many reasons I am glad I found your channel and your all natural approach to growing healthy food. I have a bag of that garden line brand of soil I will be isolating to its own tote and like you amend it with scraps and leaves and such. Thank you so much for mentioning this issue.

Saw a video that said people buy manure or use it if grass is growing in it and it kills the garden. U could grow corn in the other soil as u let your scraps break down and use it in couple years. Don't remember if it takes two or three years for herbicides harmful effects to die. Thanks for all your uplifting videos. I agree about maggots...I feed them to my Chickies.

The brand I will never use again is the Kellogg brand of potting soil for raised bed garden soil. I went out and bought bag after bag to start my garden. I used it to fill huge pots and nothing ever grew. The problem I found was the top of the soil was bone dry and the bottom smells like sewage and was sopping wet. I then had to go out and buy bag after bag of other products to add to that horrid mix. You can complain to the company because this has been a huge problem for many and the companies gave refunds.

This is my second year watching your videos and following your brilliant methods! But I don't know how you make soil so fast. I collected kitchen vegetable peelings (a whole bucket every 2 days) and took them out to the tubs all winter. Still, by spring I still felt I needed a generous layer of Miracle Grow potting mix on top. Maybe I'm filling it up too high. Still, your methods are much more economical than the old way I used to garden. My neighbors hate the tubs but I'm already eating lettuce and radishes I planted by seed and they just put in their starts. (Virginia, zone 6a)

There is lots of construction going on around my neighborhood and they tend to dig very deep into the ground. They will put most of that dirt on the side of their work area. Ask if you could have some or just take it because they want to get rid of it anyways. Mix that dirt with wood chips and leaf matter like Robbie was showing you in this vid and you should be good to go. I have been doing this for over the past 4 years and now all of my totes are completely broken down into fluffy soil full of worms and other microbes. I also did this with a 8'x4'x4' compost bin that I built from large slabs of wood. tons of scraps that still had seeds from squash, sweet potatoes, and other plants have grown without me doing a thing. I even never watered it. It ended up producing 20 butternut squashes and 25 sweet potatoes. And that happened in the first year of me setting it up back in 2021. I have since been letting the weeds grow in it so that I can use them to feed my other plants. I plan to plant lots of food in my compost bin this year. I hope this help you on your journey. Good luck.

It takes awhile to get enough compost, continue using Miracle Grow. Ask your neighbors if you can come by and pick up their kitchen scraps every couple days, repay with some of those tons of zucchinis you will be harvesting. Ask people for their bagged leaves in the fall and grass clippings if they don't spray their lawn with chemicals. People are all about recycling these days you might be surprised by strangers just showing up with stuff because of a neighbor mentioning what you need!

I've also found Miracle Grow to be good, but it's much higher-priced. Right now, the 1.5 cubic-foot bag of Kellogg is just under $8 at Lowe's (it's gone up at Home Depot). Thank you for making this video, liked and subscribed.
I think you are honest and are really here sharing how you succeed through the years of gardening. I watched many gardening channels and what they share is the knowledge that is out there in the books and online, not though real experiences and failures, it is like many cooks out there, they just don't want to share the real recipe. Your videos really help beginners gardeners like me that keep failing and spent too much money with little results.

The big green bag of garden soil is sold at Walmart, and I have bought several bags of it to mix with top soil and to refresh potting soil. I grow houseplants and outdoor flowers. I have never tried to grow food plants in it. My cannas and gladiolus bulbs are popping up like crazy in it. I also amended it by placing the mixture on top of pooped on hay, courtesy of my cousin’s cows.

Thank you. I got some of the same ones last year and put in some of the totes. Things came up, turned yellow and died. I didn't know if I had done something wrong or what happened. Then I got some of the Miracle-Gro and put in other totes and those did great. But, I was so discouraged by the other thinking I wasn't doing it right that I wasn't going to do much this year. But, I just had to try again. This really helped me understand what happened because some of the bags you had were the same kind I had gotten last year. Including the Miracle-Gro. So now I am going to get some more of it and try more. The tomatoes and cucumbers are doing good so far. Going to fill up some of the other totes with some good stuff. And try again. You are so very helpful and I appreciate what you share with us. Thank you.

I moved to a new house, so I will be setting up a new garden in containers and will have to use bagged soil. I plan on using Miracle Gro and Pro Mix because I’ve always had good results with them. I tried soil from the Dollar Tree last year and nothing grew in it. I plan on gathering up weeds and leaf matter and also using kitchen scraps, paper and cardboard in the bottom and then using potting mix on the top. After this first season, I should be able to make enough of my own soil and hopefully not have to buy any more. Thanks for all of the great information you share with us!

@kleineroteHex now that's a good question. I did use the stalks for various things involving composting. So far this year it hasn't affected my plants. When I had the heavily contaminated soil, I noticed within the first few days. Maybe if you composted 50 stalks it would have an effect, I had about 10 total.

Eager to see how your experiment works. I recently purchased some of the Miracle Grow Potting Mix, like 6 bags, and some Schultz Garden Soil from Menards. I will never buy the Schultz Garden Soil again, even though I only used two bags of it in with the six bags of the better stuff, it was so completely full of huge pieces of wood, barely any actual dirt in it at all! Don't buy it guys, unless you'd rather pretty much have mulch with a tiny bit of dirt.

Hey Robbie I am dealing with this now my tomato’s have deformed all this season and not producing they sprayed GRAZON on the Hay they fed the cattle and it came out the cow still in it they bagged and sold to me at Lowell big box store. It can last up to 5 years so now it will cost me 2500.00 to get rid of it all and buy all new clean organic soil, I’m very angry this is my 2nd year dealing with this mess. These farmers don’t seem to know their manure is tainted and not good for gardening. I hope it comes back to haunt them because they’ve cost me a fortune that I cannot afford. Thank you for the heads up we need to share this and spread it to everyone.

Im having issues with clay dirt in my backyard. I've added garden soil, peatmoss and perlite last year but my veggies still had a severe slow growth. Ive decided to just plant flowers instead but I do have veggies in pots

    • @FacediGu
      @FacediGu Рік тому

You are adding the wrong things! You need to cover it with a foot or more (deeper is better) of arborist wood chips during the rainiest time of year. Leave it break down, but if you want to plant into it right away just make a pocket in the chips until you reach the clay, add a double handful of gypsum, some food scraps or garden waste, and finally some compost or potting soil. Find or buy some compost worms and add them to your first few holes. It is similar to the way Robbie layers her containers only in the soil. You will need to top up the chips at least once a year, but if you are lucky you can get them for free. I have been able to create a lush food forest on difficult clay using this technique.
Clay is magical stuff - full of nutrients - but you need to improve it's structure to make it available to your plants. Wood chips and gypsum will help you do that.

Hi Robbie great tip on the soil. I started sifting native soil. So far so good dear. Thank you for your video today I learned a lot. God bless you and Gary love you 😘 both. How's the weather there??? It's going to freeze here in Pennsylvania. I do have a question I did plant a few things like sweet corn in red solo cups there outside. And transferred flowers. I did cover everything with sheets. Now in the morning do I water them as soon as it gets warm out or should I water the plants after I take the sheets off my plants?? Please help me

I use weeds (ones that haven't gone to seed yet) as a top mulch in all my veggie garden areas. I figure the weeds have stolen nutrients from my pots they may as well get cut up and put back on top to help keep the top covered and cooler on these hot days ahead. Everyone with a yard has tons of free weeds to use if they haven't been sprayed with an herbicide.

Much appreciated explanatory video, Robbie. So I've realized I'll be ending up with way more cherry tomato plants than I'll require this season. Great news for the food pantry, however they've NO garden space...so I'll be the one growing them. Anyhow, most my totes are 18gal., some are 20 or 30gal. I want to utilize the totes best I can w/o crowding anything. Do you have any suggestions of what to plant or links to previous videos that provide examples??
Our food pantry is struggling because grocery store corporations are no longer allowing their stores to donate most foods. This means something as basic as a loaf of bread is getting returned instead of marked down or donated. I found out this malevolent news after yelling at my grocery store managers because my friend at our pantry is also a manager & she couldn't understand why the store had all but ceased donating food. I've NEVER been fond of dealing with the Corporate office of any business, however....this stunt is beyond despicable! Much love & healing, ~ Covah

mushrooms could potential be used to breakdown the persistent herbicides , as they have the ability to change there adaptive enzymes in order to eat new food sources , and commercially they are often grown on straw which is likely to contain the persistent herbicide , mixing wood chips into soil then introduce mushroom spore then mulching surface with wood chip ..

I'm from France. But here, I've heard from users to avoid buying seed tapes. Low germinating rates overall. That was a complaint for every brand. Of course, some people have success, but the majority of the feedback is negative. Homemade seed tapes seem to work better, as people at least have a better knowledge of where their seeds come from and what type of tape they are using.

I started several different tomato starts and used a mix of various soils. I had collected some potting soil from someone giving it away because they were moving from a rented apartment. I was suspicious because there were no worms and it was very sandy dense. Sure enough the seedlings in that soil are stunted compared to the others. I've re-potted them in my compost and they are doing better. Crossing my fingers. I'm trying what you are with the problem soil . I'm using it layered in a Compost-In-Place tote system and then putting a 2nd layer of pots I know have many worms in them. I'm hoping that will improve the quality of the problem soil over time. But I wonder really if its safe to salvage. . .if the food grown in it will be ok. If herbicides kill off plants, and if it passes thru in the manure, then if we consume food from that soil, does it kill off our own good gut bacteria? Not sure of this invasion of chemicals not part of the natural processes.
