This was a great video. My main problem is I get decision fatigue. I have so many unused kits from my CTMH days and now I am starting to have unused products from SU. I also have YEARS of photos that I need to document. I may try to start with paper first, that is a great idea. When I was taught scrapbooking 20ish years ago, the person I learned from was strictly photos first. Another interesting thing I learned from your video is to NOT use that matching color for a photo mat. That is interesting to me. I was always taught to find the most vibrant color in your photo and match that for your mats. You used that bright pink example and it was an "ah ha" moment for me. I never thought about it actually taking away from the photo. I spend most of my crafty time organizing and repackaging all of the SU products into a system that works in my craft room because I just can't seem to get started. I may just now find time to sit down and attempt to scrapbook again. Thank you for your tips.
I totally understand the decision fatigue, Patti! It’s actually one of my biggest struggles and why it takes me days to do a layout! I have to keep walking away and coming back to it fresh. Creating the kits like this is so helpful because a lot of the decisions are made and you don’t have to feel like you’re creating a LO start to finish with all the decisions that come with it. Of course everyone is different and some people can make quick decisions (my sister being one of those types of people!) But try this out and see if it helps! I think a lot of people have that same theory of choosing the brightest color for the mats. There’s not a hard and fast rule for selecting colors and paper but when you actually hold the papers up I think more often than not you’ll see that that way of doing it doesn’t always work to make the photos pop. Instead, try using that color maybe as a mat around the entire LO, as a frame style layout. Then add just small pops of it in clusters. Depends on the photos and paper and what the color is, etc. So many factors… 😂
Oh My Gosh! Make your own kits! Of course, how have I not thought of this in 20 years! ! That is so fabulous and also will be fun to put together. The Winter Meadow is so beautiful, I am using it to make my thank you cards for Christmas.
The Winter Meadow is soooo pretty! That’s a perfect one for Christmas thank-yous. I hope you enjoy making kits. I wish I started doing it sooner. It’s been a game-changer for sure.
Loved this video! I would like to see more of these. I do very similar to you. I always make kits and then work off of the kits whether it’s at home or pulling them for a retreat. I love seeing how others do it so I can hone my process. The only thing I do different is I choose the pictures first as I’m sure most do. I can kind of see why you do it this way now. It enables you to make use of the new papers right away rather than putting them away and forgetting about them. I may just try this. I have a retreat in February that we do every year and I want to start getting some packets together. What I would love to see if how you get the embellishments ready for a kit or do you not add those. For a retreat I try to add my embellishments to the kits as well since I won’t be in my scrap room. Great video!
Thank you for this detailed process. Very inspiring for me. I get so overwhelmed and end up not scrapbooking but taking it one day at a time to pick things seems much more manageable for me. Awesome video and Happy New Year.
Thank you so much for the tips for manipulating photos on the iPhone. Just these were so helpful. I’m going to be saving and watching this video several times.
I’ve been more of a photo first person as I’m new to scrapbooking and also trying to organise thousands of old photos so get inspired as I sort it. However I think paper first will also be more fun as I can prioritise my favourite papers too. Preparing kits really helps me as I’m a lone parent so getting time to scrapbook is limited. But I can easily do prep work like this for half an hour or so after my son is asleep, and then when I do get some childfree hours I can go straight to creating the layouts. I’ve just created a paper first kit tonight after seeing this video and it was fun to do.
This video is amazing. How you sort your photos is so so great. I do the album separation but I’m taking it to the next level with your method. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Oh Jayma! I love your idea of making multiple kits so that when I have time to scrapbook, I can just grab a kit and all the prep work has been done before! Thanks so much for such a wonderful idea! Happy New Year!
Awesome tips. I really like the phone tips too. You know so much more about this stuff than I do. It’s quite amazing. Thank you. I think picking your paper first is a brilliant idea. We always picked our pictures and then had to find paper to go along with them, which is harder I think. I’ll have to give scrapbooking a try your way and see how I like the difference. I think I will like it a lot.
It makes a difference for sure! I used to start with photos first too and I find it so much easier to start with paper now. Have fun and hope this helps your flow!
As usual, I always learn something new from you! I like the idea of making kits to work more efficiently when I scrapbook. I have tried the apps you recommended to print different size photos and it has been a game changer ( especially for my December Daily book)! Looking forward to trying new things soon and look forward to the new items coming out next week! Thanks Jayma!😊
I really need to discipline myself with photos. I just dump everything but I can see how selecting ❤ would streamline the process. Always picking up great tips from you. Thanks and Happy New Year!
Loved watching your process and how your brain works with putting papers with photos. I need to get back to the "power sort" days when I go on retreats and workshops. Makes everything so much quicker.
This is how I scrap too, except that I start with my photos and usually do a months of photos at a time. Probably because I’m a chronological Scrapbooker. Thanks for the tips and tricks and reaffirming my process too.
Good for you for scrapping chronologically! It sure would make it easier to actually finish an album. 🤣 I bounce all over the place, but I enjoy working with what inspires me at the time. Great to hear that these methods have been working for you, too!
Thank you for all the tips. I’ve recently been creating kits with paper, photos and sketches. One thing I do like is, I can put the kit away and come back to it later. Sometimes deciding on papers can be the longest part 😂. I’ll be re watching this video on the iPhone tips!
This vid was sooooo helpful!!! I have struggled to make kits from SU paper packs as I think they have been designed for card making more and the scale isn’t diverse enough for scrapbooking. Thank you for showing your problem solving process eg bringing in another paper pack that is more generic ❤that. Oh and I ❤ the photo selection process too, soooo very helpful. Tricks I didn’t know you could do eg: the swipe to return to previous view etc.
So glad you found this helpful! It has been tough to get a good mix for scrapbooking with one SU pack, but there is definitely enough variety when you mix packs. It takes a little extra thinking but has been fun. Especially making the kits. I am so glad they’re bringing in more scrapbook kits to help, though!
Hello Jayma. How did you guess that my resolution was to do more scrapbooking this year? I too have been thinking of making it a set time each week or fortnight. I also picked up on your great tip to "heart" your favourite photos so you don't have to keep picking through them for printing. Excellent tip thank you!
I started making kits after watching one of Erin’s videos recently. It has made such a difference especially at the moment. I’m doing a 40 pages in 49 days challenge.
I have so many layouts I made from “teaching” a class once a month…first with CTMH and now SU…..I’m going to use them like you do….find photos to match the layouts.
Great video Jayma!! I will be scrapbooking next week and started to do this. Then I’m like, I don’t know if I have enough paper, so I started putting in a bunch of paper that might go, but now it’s getting too heavy. So I’m gonna unpack and start again😂🤦🏻♀️.
Hahahaha don’t worry, Judy, I know the feeling! 😂 It’s so hard when you’ll be away from home because you don’t want to overpack but you don’t want to be without something you need! 🤣 Good luck and glad this came at a good time for you!
So interesting to see how other people plan! It looks like it's a great system that works for you. I don't know if I could ever plan that far ahead but I sure would like to try some day lol! Thank you for sharing!
That is wonderful that you can do that! I enjoy every part of the process too. I’m still enjoying it, just batching the planning part. Like I said, everyone’s brain works differently and you get to choose to scrapbook the way you enjoy it most. 😊
@@JaymaMalmeI’m like you. I still enjoy it but I’m always so behind. I’m still working on 2011 but I skip around. At some point, I just want to finish a year so it’s complete.
I love making page kits and I do it the same way by choosing my papers first. They’re fun to make and I get so much more done when I go to a crop! Love your videos. Do you choose stamps and dies when you make your page kits or do you wait until you’re ready to scrapbook? 💕
It makes it so much easier to get things done when you pre-plan! I don’t add stamps or dies or embellishments to my kit but typically I’ll have an idea in mind of what I want to use when I’m making the kit. If I’m planning for a crop, I will pull the stamps/dies/embellishmnets when I put the kit together but I keep them separate. I will also try to plan kits that have overlapping stamps and dies so I don’t have to pack as many.
Wow!!! This video is fantastic and I know I am going to go back and refer to it many times!!! I love the kit ideas but do you always only do a 2 page layout with kits? For example, if you find you have many many photos that you want to use, too many for a 2 pg. layout, do you go ahead and make your kit a 4 or 6 pg. layout? And if you do, do you do different layouts for each 2 pg. one or make them all the same? Would you use all the same papers and mix them up between these layouts or just go completely different for each one? When you scrapbooking and do kits or just page layouts, do you make these with a particular album in mind and start putting them in the album or just stack up a lot of finished layouts and worry about the album later? Also, how to you do your albums, by year or event or person??? Sorry so many questions but I’ve been out of scrapbooking for long time and really want to get back into it as I have tons of photos.
