Here's a short teaser of stripping down, cleaning and super tuning my vintage Abu Ambassadeur 2500C reel.
The finished reel was fitted with:
→ AMO honeycomb spool
→ Valley Hill Idler Gear
→ Avail Ultralight line guide
→ Avail Ultralight Worm Drive Assembly (with BB)
→ Ceramic Worm Drive Pawl
→ Carbontex Drag Washers
→ New Brake Blocks
→ Simon Shimomura Custom Handle 80-mm
Enjoy!
Best bass fishing reel made IMO. Wish they still made them...especially the way they used to make all of the ambassadeurs.
I do love mine, I have to say…
You weren't lying when you said they are expensive!
you should make a video where you exactly explain how the whole tuning process was made.
I mean, where you get the bfs spool , the line retriver etc
In the complete article on the following link there are links to where I bought all the tuning parts Rolf (the full strip down and re-assembly video will be available for subscribers to our BFS Club Email newsletter - link also below):

Great job buddy 👍
Thanks dude - cool channel you've got there too. Paul
I recently found a reel that looks almost exactly like this one on AliExpress. It's called the w300.
I've seen a few posts on FB groups of people using them. They look fun.
but the spool weight of w300 is on the heavier side right?
What parts of this build are absolutely essential for casting light lures vs just nice to have parts? I’ve been seeing alot of Japanese anglers using these reels as well as the abu spinning reels like the C3, I’m guessing they customize those as well to make them better at casting light lures? Cool build
Hi Kevin - I think for very light lures; the UL spool, bearings and then new level wind gear, ceramic level-wind pawl would be very helpful (you might want new drag washers also - and they are pretty cheap). The AMO spool that I got works with the original centrifugal brake blocks (which is good from my point of view since it doesn't require a whole new magnetic brake system). Good luck - you can soon find yourself adding more and more parts (with an ever-expanding price tag). Paul
I have one of those
I kind of excessively love mine... Paul
@@FishingDiscoveries I bought mine from new along with the rod that matched it was there first trip into graphite. I still have it in its tube in near mint condition.
@@ROLLRIGHTYT123 Officially envious 🤟😁
I'm a big Abu fan and own quite a few 4600, 5000, 5500, and 5600's and want to convert a 5500 or 5600 to a BFS reel. Been doing research but can't come up with define answers. Do you have recommendation where I can find such a conversion. Thanks for posting!
Hi Ron, I'm not aware (off the top of my head) of any companies offering ultralight spools for abu reels that are larger than the "small ambassadeurs" (the 2500s and 1500s). I could, of course, be wrong - though it kind of makes sense given the increase in size and weight of reels may not make the best match for small, light BFS rods.
@@FishingDiscoveries Thanks for quick reply! Maybe I'll try and find a decent used 2500 and make it my next project! If not then I can add it to my Abu collection:) Just curious, with a 2500 BFS how does it cast 1-3g jigs compared to modern BFS reels.
@@rondetorres3842 I was kind of shocked at how well it compared to modern BFS reels once I had the ultra light spool and upgraded worm drive etc. I haven't thrown a trout magnet on it yet, but 1.7g (quite wind-resistant) suspending jerk baits (50mm Zoner SP Minnows) went really well. Yes, a Daiwa alphas air tw 20 could throw it a bit further...but I was kind of shocked how well the mechanical centrifugal brakes and shuttling line guide mechanisms performed.
I'm not mechanically mind , if I took that apart I wouldn't know how to put it back together
I wasn't convinced I'd manage it either Kevin to be honest. Putting all the pieces down in the order I took them apart helped - as did filming it so we could look back and see how it had fitted together before! Paul
