@@rubberduky1829 I agree, every move has a basic start and then there is a multitude of angles, grips, counters, combo's, stances, etc... that go off that same basic move... this is simply just one of them that works consistently for me.. that's all..
I love videos that mix judo and bjj, i practice both and they work great together, nowadays i think it's the most truthful way to practice old school pre Olympic "Kano JuJutsu"
Kano jujutsu actually never existed. When Jigoro Kano created judo in 1882 he already created it with the name judo. Others called judo jujutsu kano. The brazilian jiu jitsu has very little of the kodokan judo that is what maintains the essence of judo idealized by Kano. Judo in its essence has changed little. What has changed is how to teach because instructors give more emphasis on sports judo than training kata and in-depth judo studies.
Just a very small "correction" for the judo guys here: When you reach over to grab the belt, it´s not sumi gaeshi but hikikomi gaeshi,.Sumi gaeshi does NOT involve reaching over your opponent's back to grab the belt. Anyway, very nice video and good explanation, thank you!
I hit this throw tonight in class and was pretty impressed with myself as was my partner!!! I'm fat, old, slow and not very agile. I literally googled Judo throws for fat slow people and this is what came up. Thankyou for a great tutorial!
This is me getting thrown around by a judo female black belt when I first started judo. Then she proceeded to scarf hold and side control. That was my very first randori and intro to actual grappling. 12 years later and I'll never ever forget that moment.
Depends on momentum there is a freestyle wrestling throw/reversal that's the same concept without the belt and you just lock your hands around the hips and rolls back. [ bad discpriton sorry] Either way I find judo helpful for gii
Rice bale throw - tawara gaeshi - is the exact counter to those takedowns, works against both kinds. It differs in that you use two handed "ring around belt" hold, similar to double overhook.
You follow into mount or side control in judo as well. The main reason is most of the time this throw is scored wazari (1/2 a score, sort of) and then you win via a pin.
Yes for sure, and I do ride them over a lot of the time in judo matches too... or even horizontal flip over into Kami-shiho (North/South) - it was kind of for the purpose of exaggerated illustration to differentiate the throw... (also Sumi has so many variations too, as you know... so we could have demo-d a lot more, but these are at least two anyway...) Thanks for pointing that out!
For bent over opponent : as soon as your opponent grabs your back and you feel it's bad you can go forward hug her and take her down (if you're good enough and can feel it). For the upright one : you can grab his back and control him It's just a matter of who's got who. It depends on how fast you react and your reflex and how good you are Every stance has a counter to it Bent over disadvantage : back grabbed Uprights stance disadvantage : hugged and taken down
Lovely video! Can you reassure me that this is legal for BJJ competition? Looks like it could be confused with head spiking? Are there any aspects - grips, direction of movement I can emphasize to stay on the right side of judges?
Thank so much for this video. I do this throw quite a bit. I do it a bit different though with the grips and instead of grabbing the belt, which I am going to try, my high grip is rather a gathering of the material at the shoulder. I by no means am at her or your level, but it seems to work right now. Thoughts on this approach?
stephan! decade in freestyle judo here (nidan) and working towards purple currently in bjj. have me out sometime so we can go over other things that she didnt really touch on at the end (particularly about who i wouldnt do this to, or the types of people) freestyle allows for leg grabs, kuchiki taioshi (single leg) and morote gari (double) and kuchiki is one that if theyve got a strong base i wouldnt do this to. if i know the person is a strong wrestler, i wouldnt do this. ive been thrown with a single leg, and morote with this before. it looks really stupid. the person throwing sumi looks like they just flopped... you CAN however, modify this to still work in that situation, but it involes a strong arm drag and wrapping up the partners arms. again, bring my by there! itd be really cool! :P
I had a lady friend at jiu jitsu show me this awhile back. She is much smaller than I am and had no problem doing the technique. I am 190 lbs and she is maybe 135ish. She said she has hit this in competition and also said she baits giving up the the single leg.
ok but demonstration should be the other way, can stephan get under hubble if she's crouched over and do a sumi gaeshi. I'm big and tall if i'm doing bjj even in my weight class the other guy is probably shorter so if he's crouched over maybe i can do a sumi gaeshi or maybe i can't. but thank you for the lesson anyway
Thank you for the video, Mr. Kesting. I know it was the purpose of demonstration but even in Judo nobody stands up with their back arches backward that much lol.
These techniques are legit, but one thing I've had issues with is that posture break snap down initiations of judo and bits of bjj. I almost never pull them off other than a sneaky arm drag, and likewise I've been able to stop them mostly. My body just does not 'give' like that and the jedi mind trick stuff is just too readable. I must be missing something, very willing to be wrong on this.
Isn't this head-outside-version of sumi geashi illegal in IBJJF comp ? Referring to the rules book: "Grab the opponents belt and throws him to the floor on his head when defending a single leg situation while his opponents head is on the outside of his body"
They look very similar and are throws that launch your opponent overhead, but the Tome Nage puts the foot on the stomach/hip. Sumi Gaeshi hooks the inner thigh.
Thank you so much for having me over Stephan! It was such an honour!!
Great detail on this move. I study under Bert Becerra Judo here in Garland, Tx. Always nice to see other views of basic moves.

Hi. Takie a look at Kosen Judo. Judo tak focuses on ground techniques only. You will find it on YT

Thanks to both of you.
Excellent details and explanation of the differences between applying this throw in BJJ and Judo scenarios.

I have never seen the detail of putting your weight under the person. This is EXCELLENT! Thanks guys.
Very effective against single leg
And double leg too ! It's also useable as a buterfly guard sweep
I usually just say 'thanks for the neck' and go to choke city, but now i have more spots to visit in the town of nage waza. Thank you both!
Uchi mata is a good for throwing crouching fighters...its also a good combo with sumi gaeshi...if they resist the uchi mata
Kathy is amazing! I now have some great things to work on where I am lacking.
SandraD, let me know how your practices are going!
Thank you so much! Sumi-gaeshi is great!
Kathy's great and this is an excellent technique. One of the only throws I reliably score!
00:00 Damn, treated him like a ragdoll 😂
Yeah, sumi gaeshi! One of my favourites =).
Great stuff. Many thanks for posting this.
Can this technique be performed as an effective counter to a single leg or double leg takedown?
colebeast55 I’m a shodan judoka (Black belt Judo). Sumi Gaeshi is my #1 counter to single legs. For double legs, UA-cam Tawara Gaeshi.
I actually find this works better as a counter throw than as an initiated throw.
Depends on momentum there is a freestyle wrestling throw/reversal that's the same concept without the belt and you just lock your hands around the hips and rolls back. [ bad discpriton sorry]

colebeast55 makes sense for a single leg counter, but doubt it would be effective against a double leg.

Excelente - how do we avoid the unsuspecting crouched opponent’s head from slamming into the mat?
You roll automatically - this looks a lot like Hiki Komi Gaeshi
What should you do in the same situation but no gi.
brilliant!

Is a head lock or other version legal in wrestling?
This is why having the takedown skills and grappling skills go hand in hand
does it work?
Good.
How do you do it without grabbing the GI ?
I do it with an upside down seatbelt grip or a bear hug
Also a great way to get blast doubled.
Everything has a foil
How tall is he

My bread and butter counter to single leg takedowns. Sometimes I’ll bait people with a single leg just to do it.
Thats awesome i will have to keep in mind to try that
Im start trying to bait single legs into this

Awsome
Something for no gi?
My reaction when I saw the first throw omw to jj class... "GODDAM"
37 years oh my god
I will never understand how people make sumi gaeshi look easy
It is easy lol
Give it about 1000 reps and you'll do just fine
what about no gi?

I do puter kepala silat throw on people who are crouching.
Doesn't work for the double leg take down but a nice move
Tawara gaeshi works
So...
Judo : "F-it I threw her I am done here."
Jiu-Jitsu: "But wait, I am still conscious.. .the fight isn't over.."
👍
Sumi gaishi!!!!
Aver la colacha
Sumi gaeshi is me bread and butter.
You belt man, very high '-'
Please forgive my language. But that was cool as shit!
In MMA it actually would be a great thing to spike their head into the ground
In MMA, you don't have the belt to grab onto, and it's illegal to grab onto the shorts.
More like Tomoe Nage
They look very similar and are throws that launch your opponent overhead, but the Tome Nage puts the foot on the stomach/hip. Sumi Gaeshi hooks the inner thigh.
For self-defense, I'd kick.
1st
Any move that requires your opponent to wear a gi to be effective is trash.
Says the guy who trains to fight naked assailants. Hmmm...
KillerSalmon He has a point though...
