I’m not crazy high level. I have a few throws and sweeps I can hit. If you really want to learn Judo, go find a class because you’ll really need to get a feel for the principle of Kuzushi for many throws to work. For this type of hips back, leaned over posture, getting a sleeve grip and a high collar grip to keep them in that position will help land the Uchi Mata. If you go for it and they are able to get upright, this will stifle the Uchi Mata so a common backup plan is to turn back in and drive forward for O Uchi Gari and sometimes that will either work or they’ll push back forward into a second Uchi Mata attempt.
@@I_Might_B_Wrong ok just wondered. I’m a brown belt in Judo and a lot of the bjj guys do the defensive posture so you got to approach differently. I like getting the Georgian grip or at least back collar and working from there
Chewy is a damn wizard. I have been to our Shaun Hammond's annual and throws gems to us Everytime. Good shit chewy I hope I can learn from you again soon
I find that arm drags work well for tall guys too. I'm 6'3" and wrestling with a shorter person is hard as they're already under my hips! The arm drag exposes a hip that I then shoot on and go for singles/high crotch. Works a treat. I'll try this one in class on Saturday. Thank you Chewy.
I know you posted a year ago but how did it work out in the class? I find it bad for me due to my knees. I am 6'1". It hurts to just drop down on my knee. I don't think I would use it in self-defense. This works mostly just on a mat.
@@myhandlehasbeenmishandled I drilled this and even did it against resistance yesterday, and I had absolutely no problem with my knees. If you're tripping them with your right leg, then your left leg (the one used to drive you in) should almost fully extend to the point where the impact on your left knee is minimal. As for the right leg, the impact is mainly on the shin, as seen in the video. I think if you get the technique right, it shouldn't hurt your knee - similar to a double leg takedown.
Great tips on noticing when to use these techniques. You can learn techniques all day but if you don't know when to use them they could do harm. I'm out in Chattanooga, plan to roll in one day since you're not too far!
Thanks so much for this, I've been around wrestling and volunteer coached for the past 18 years but starting BJJ people grabbing my GI breaks my brain! I have class tonight, I'll see if I can use this.
@@no1up I forgot about it but I'll reuse it. I had a couple of matches I posted on my profile from this past weekend. Old fat guys playing pajama pulling for 5 minutes... :)
I like this takedown. I'm only a 4-month no stripe white belt and I struggle most with when the role begins. I don't know what to do sometimes I only have like two moves. And most people know what they're going to be. So it's nice to have another takedown under my belt I want to practice this one definitely

@@ballisticvole You are correct, however after the 2017 rule changes, the IJF doesnt recognize kouchi gake as its own throw anymore, and consider it a variation on kouchi makikomi. However according to Kano, Kouchi gari, kouchi gake and kouchi makikomi are all different throws, although they do all look very similar. Their English translations help explain the differences. kouchi gari - minor inside reap kouchi gake - minor inside hook kouchi makikomi - minor inside wraparound "Gari" is more like a foot sweep. "Gake" is more like a foot block. "Makikomi" is a whole leg wraparound.
It's also called an arm drag to inside trip. There's tons of carry over with judo and wrestling. Most of the techniques aren't mutually exclusive to one or the other. ua-cam.com/video/q_p65T_OKxE/v-deo.html
i think you will have better luck with that inside back heel trip if you get your hip in play .add a short step with your left foot if the drag doesnt bring him close left short step bringing your feet closer together or scissoring slightly behind .when you drive inside with the right hook low emphasize the finish by trying to drive your right knee to the mat with a hip thrust just like an outside heel trip *(hips.100%)
Another good one is to pin the arm, get an over the back grip on the gi (collar tie works alright for no gi), and start circuling and cutting the corner around your opponent while pulling their head down and then driving in for a massive osoto gari
Love that combination - I’ve used that takedown many times, but not with the arm drag setup - looking forward to trying that out - question - would you ever use that type of takedown on the street/cement/asphalt?
whats with this question every time someone does a takedown video? My homie if youre attacked by a dumbfuck on the street youll most probably just need double underhooks into an outside trip-backbreaker
What if your opponent’s hands both have a grip on your wrist/sleeve? Tried to do this in my 3rd class. I’m 5’0”, my sparring partner was 5’9”, but I couldn’t free my hands to do this takedown.
Chewie! 1. Would you say this is your favorite way to take someone down when you face someone with the 'butt out' stance? (Sorry, that really is what I call it.) 2. Could you show other things that combo with this? 3. Oh yeah! Also 3, is there a concern for the Guillotine with this system?
I love grappling but two grapplers going for takedowns always breeds stupid weird stances that no one does or should use in a fight. And it's weird to watch. "Oh I know what would be really effective here. Let me stick my head out about knee level but like aggressively. Hands? Uhhh... I'll keep them protecting my collar. You really want to look like a hungry chicken. That's how you know you got it."
So with your right foot outfront you want to take control of his left arm but you grab his right arm.....which has me wondering which is it right arm or left arm and from your partner's facial expression has him confused as well
Yeah but for the nogi what to do if the opponent is wearing a half sleeve rash guard and is covered on sweat. When you try to do the arm drag, everything just slips, any advice?
How about a good collar drag? But it kinda sucks seeing your training buddy go face first into the ground. Collar drags can be borderline brutish "d---- move" for everyday training.
Judo background here. I absolutely love when BJJ guys use that posture. A significant amount of the time it’s a free Uchi Mata.
What else would you recommend?
