Are you graduating soon? Are you considering getting a master's degree?
If so, my question for you is: WHY?
There are plenty of GOOD reasons to get a master's degree. But you have to think it through before. Are you getting a master's degree because you don't know what to do next? Or because you need more knowledge in a particular area?

The issue with this is that over saturation with many graduates going towards a Masters degree will cause that at some point the job market will start to pay less and require more education. This is causing that companies request unrealistic requirements to hire employees.

hahah you are easily talked into, or out of possibilities. I start my Master's in a couple of weeks. Education is starting to look like a tool. Much like a knife, drill, hammer, etc. Should you fail and not build much, it will not be for the lack of tools, but because you did not learn how to use it.

prospective employer will think you want high sallary and that's right, you will want high sallary because you have spent so much (time and/or money) for the degree!
I think it depends on where you are from , in anglo countries most companies require just a bachelor and not so many people do a masters degree (from my understanding at least , I am not from neither UK ,US or Canada ) . In cont Europe (especially Germany ,Spain , Italy and even Russia, which used to have a single consecutive degree until Bologna ) however literally EVERYBODY (expect for those who should not have gone to uni in the 1st place and barely got a bachelor ) have a MSdegree ; things are starting to change and companies are starting to see value in people who just have a bachelor but unfortunately the trend is fairly recent ; in continental europe NOT having a MDegree, unfortunately, puts you at a GREAAT competitive disadvantage compared to the other like 70% of people that get their masters after their bachelor . Bologna was a bit of a failure because employers havent updated their mindest of "you need to go to college for 4/5 years ".

I highly disagree I don’t know anyone who has done a masters for any of those reasons. I would only choose to pursue a masters degree because there maybe loopholes in the “system” that need to be researched and investigated in order to improve a particular service. The goal would be to use those particular skills and knowledge to improve the community or system.
Good video but I disagree. Someone with a bachelor degree COULD be as valuable if not more valuable than graduate with a MA degree. However, Western countries have an oversaturation of folks with a Bachelor degree. In contrast, a Masters Degree CAN help you get the job of your dreams if it has an internship because that's a foot in the door into firms and organizations that a BA/BS student couldn't get a Skype interview for because they lack the 1-3 years of professional experience. Masters Degrees can give you such experience. But I also think that most people don't know how to sell themselves well in a resume. It's difficult. But the truth is that no matter how well you frame your self, you can't make a rock into a diamond. You gotta somehow get a mentor, a Masters program with internship or volunteer to get the skills needed for your dream job. What do you think?
Totally agree Ken! You said it yourself! A Masters Degree can help you stand out from others if you know all the data you just explained - bonus point if it offers an internship you're getting relevant and real world experience while studying. The problem is, not a lot of people think this way - only a minority do the research to see if in their specific field and situation, if a masters degree will actually help them stand out. Unfortunately in many fields they dont offer internship and in other fields it doesn't help you stand out! Prior research is key to know if it's a good idea or not! Thanks for your input Ken :)

My reason was simply I was too confused and too scared to enter the "real world".

Then you can take the best decision regarding your future. I just read the book "So Good They Can't Ignore You" where Cal Newport, the author, explains how to transition from University to the real world! I highly recommend you read the book! :)

Currently finishing a general business management degree, not sure what I want to do maybe something in the economic and finance world but not completely sure yet which is why I feel like it's a waste to do a master's in an area I'm not sure I want to commit too. However, I'm cursed by how non specific my bachelor's degree is as I think it may be too difficult to find a high paying job and leaves me destined to mediocre positions
depends on the person. Some people are successful with it. Some are successful without it. You miles may vary.
Hi I'm about to start my master degree this year. I live in the UK and i haven't been able to get a job in this country because my specialist is clinical embryologist . Although I have 10 years of experience in my field but because it was in my original country not in the UK. So they keep telling me that I should do some experience in the UK and this is why I'm going to study master.

May I ask what if one do if someone have a master degree but still unemployed for that particular working sector, but he cannot turn back to the starting point because he has already overqualified and job skills mismatch for another field's starting position. What should he do?
I’ve looked at many programs and the cost are around $20k - $30k max for state schools that’s not really bad and that’s for the total cost. Especially if you’re working in that field.
I have no idea why Americans dont seek to study abroad. Germany and Switzerland, heaven for Masters.
About to graduate bachelor's and will enroll in double masters in germany.
Germany education is basically free, and there are some insane offers in Switzerland, masters under $5000.
I picked these countries coz of the language. If Americans spent time researching...freedom.
Choose wisely...it all depends on what field you're in....
For a social worker reference just think of a waiter. As a social worker, I have to be a therapist, waiter, parent, and teacher to a person. I would of said, "how can I serve you, your highness?"

exactly. I just finished my degree on chemistry and was thinking about the master, but I don't want to do research and I don't wanna teach, I just want to work on the industry so I didn't go to grad school. I have enough with my diploma for what I want to do
My current profs in my masters do not teach me anything. They only give assignments and deadlines. I do not learn anything. Is it alright to drop out? or just go with it since it's relatively easy to pass (my profs seem unmotivated) and my expenses are sponsored by my boss. I think it is a waste of time, but my peers always tell me to just bear with it because whether I learn something or not, I gain the title when I graduate. and I have a sense of guilt if I just waste the initial expenses shouldered by my sponsor

Hello, I’m ragasowndriya from India. I recently completed my BSc in biochemistry and I applied for my Msc in immunology at University college London. Also I got my unconditional offer from the university but due to my family situation I couldn’t make it this year(2019) so I deferred my offer to next year (2020). In mean time I took clinical research training and got job in number 1 CRO company(covance). So please can you suggest what would be a good decision whether to go for masters and phd or I have to continue in this job
Hey @raga! Here are the questions you should ask yourself to take the best decision for your personal situation:
- What is the job you really want? Do you need a Masters/PhD to get it?
- Why are you pursuing a Masters/PhD? Is it because you want this knowledge (if so then go for it), if it is "just to study more" or if it's because you want more opportunities, maybe you should reconsider and research what kind of job you want first!
If you like your job at Covance, and you see yourself doing that in the long run, is a Masters degree really required for you?
If you're actually interested in another job where you need a Masters, then definitely pursue your Masters in 2020!

Why would you keep getting associates degrees? Technical school associate degrees are such a waste. Before getting my bachelor's degree and master's degree, I attended a technical school, and it was the most ridiculous thing I ever went to. Not at all on par with a regular university and I learned that the hard way. I feel for you!
so i finished my masters and unfortunately I'm Jobless with 3 years of working experience. What made me go for a masters degree was the same reasons you mentioned however right now Im thinking maybe getting another undergraduate degree would have been a much better choice we spend our entire life working and learning when we should only do the things we really enjoy and are passionate about

what about if your undergraduate marks/GPA are shit and you can get better marks in your masters. that would help with getting the really competitive graduate jobs where they're looking for top marks right?
If your GPA is really low, are you going to be able to be accepted into a Masters program? And even if you do, are you sure you can transform your low GPA into a super competitive one with only 4 additional semesters? (2 years of Masters) I won't recommend taking that approach, companies are letting go the GPA requirements more and more, I would focus on getting new skills and experience to be competitive in the job market
Not sure this is relevant to the US as I'm in the UK. I had a poor undergraduate result (I lost a family member in my third year of a mathematics degree and I ended up leaving with just a 3 year Bsc mathematics which is low since most people in the UK graduate with honours degrees)
I worked as a tutor and bartender and took part time unpaid work on the side to get experience. Then I used that to get into a low entry requirement post graduate certificate qualification and used my experience to get better unpaid work at an engineering company. Through that company I met an associate professor who I bonded with and I used the skills I had picked up working and studying to write an accademic paper under her supervision.
Now I've just successfully applied and got entry to one of the most competitive space engineering masters degrees in the world. While also having a job offer to work as a data scientist for the civil service (I haven't decided which to go for yet). Not to say the journey is over, but it's the first time in years I've been back on track.
So if you do want to find that sort of success after poor performance at undergraduate it is possible. However I had allot of luck, help from friends and people I met. At the worst time of it I was working 9-5 unpaid at an engineering startup, 6-8 as a maths tutor then 9-4am as a cocktail barman. 5 days a week at the same time I was studing graduate courses in space technology with my weekends. And this sort of limbo period took me 2 years to complete, on low pay and no free time whatsoever.
I wouldn't recommend quite that sort of work rate for long as I burned out pretty bad. But if you are determined to do something and you are willing to sacrifice everything unimportant in your life, you can probably make it happen. All it takes is to never ever settle.

@@JaneParkerBowls I slept for about 4 hours from 430-830. Bearing in mind the bar job didn't fully overlap with the other 2. So I had 2 night periods off and 2 day periods off per week.
But you work for PwC, and last i checked they want a masters or be currently pursuing a masters degree for them to consider your application
I worked at PwC with no masters degree... Maybe the job posting you read was mentioning that they prefered a masters degree but it's never required
Lots of jobs have hard requirements for a Masters degree.
5:15 I have to stop you there. Some jobs can only be acquired by obtaining a Masters degree. Say for example, a degree student with 2 years of HR experience wants to enter a organization trainers job and his competitor is a Masters graduate in IO Psychology with no experiences. From experience, many companies will higher the Masters student with no experiences because he has the qualifications. Do not underlook the value of a Masters degree. By average anyone with a Masters will have a higher salary than a degree student if both were given the same amount of experience. Plus, a Masters grad with 8 years experience is more value in terms of face value (I'm speaking from HR experience) compared to a Degree grad with 10 years experience. In long term a Masters does become the better investment. But unnecessarily anyone with or without a degree or a masters can be rich if they pursue to do business or start up a company. It's just that by having a Masters you will likely receive a higher salary than a degree grad with same level of experience, in which you would have a higher advantage as a Masters grad to start your own businesses. I agree that not everyone has the passion to pursue a Masters because their dream ambition does not require one. But having one is an advantage all around if you're presented with opportunity to do so 💪
Just because someone has a Master's degree doesn't mean that they are more qualified. To me it means that they are more book smart or have a better level of understanding of a specific subject area. What also helps with a Master's degree is if you have work experience to help support it. At least where I work, having a Master's hasn't helped me yet to receive a promotion. The interesting part is I often work along side HR, but even with a Master's I still get clicked off because I don't have direct experience in HR.
So salary is your major life's focus
It's not always about the salary. Everyone knows that teachers get paid, not so great. But they are very important people, in my view. They are in charge of the next generation. With that being said, imagine if EVERYONE only did jobs based on salary. We would have no teachers or professors or janitors. As I've gotten older I've realized its not always about the money, but how your work can impact the world positively for generations to come.
He's saying this from a perspective of what kind of masters degree? I'm curious what masters he got that made him question the validity of his degree. So I can avoid it, lol.
Couldn't have agreed more. I got my master's and bachelor's in IT, branched out to different fields like web dev and network security, still can't land any job after 7 months.
Also, I think it may have a negative effect because recruiters might think you want a higher salary just because you finished your masters. Happened to me once when a recruiter replied, "You have your master's degree. We're just looking for a 'regular support officer' ". Sad
I hope it goes well to you. But some positions are just not meant for master, and you picked one. Continue searching because there will be definetly a company who wants an IT specialist with nothing else, but a Master. If you don't have experience, they will offer probation time 6 months with reduced salary. If you have, the discussion is usually straight forward.

here's my opinion: only get that master's *if your employer is paying for it.*
when a person has to get a master's just to gain entry to a job, then the system is the problem, and not the person. it's best to forget about that master's and build a business on the side instead.
as for me, i learned a skilled trade (with a _paid_ apprenticeship) instead of going to college, and work two jobs, have zero debt, and make $120k per year at 28 years old.
What if you’re getting a masters degree paid for?
I would still do extensive research to see if staying in class for 2 more years is better than going out there and learn valuable skills in the work space
