Hey! I am from East Kazakhstan. Our Winter, I would say, is as severe as Astana's, maybe except being dry. If you are the one reading this and planning to visit East Kazakhstan, video above should be useful too. Here are some tips from me: -Multiple layers of socks are OK here if it's too cold. I always bring a reserve pair beside ones I wore, just in case. -Make sure that boots aren't TOO tight, because if they are tight: 1) your legs are more likely to get cold. (same thing with tight clothes. I guess, that's because of the blood circulation and air that keeps us warm, but this advice is mostly my personal observation) 2) you lose the ability to wear warm socks when needed. -Streets get icy from time to time, so winter shoes with plain sole are your enemies. Boots with thick and lug soles are good choice, i think. I saw kind of spikes in shops, that can be attached to your shoes to protect you from slipping. -Using INSOLES is a nice way to protect your feet from cold. -Shoes & insoles SHOULD be sent out to dry when you come back home. I put some old newspapers so that they absorb all the wetness, or you might buy a special electric dryer. And just take out the insoles and wait until they're dry. -MITTENS are warmer than gloves. -HAIR reacts bad on temperature difference, so I try to hide my hair under the coat. Hair GALVANIZES quite often, so be ready. I've heard about special hairbrushes and other products, but can't say anything about their effectiveness. -When choosing a coat, I would recommend to buy one with multiple pockets. Like... 2 pockets are placed as usual, but there are 2 holes in each and in one you can leave your belongings, while another is for your hands. It can help to save your belongings from snow on your hands or gloves when you put them back in pockets (having many pockets is great anyway:) -Don't wear costume jewelry when you're outside. I mean ears. They might get cold quite fast. -Wearing SUNGLASSES is totally OK. We need UV protection in Winter too. Eyes might hurt bad, because snow reflects the majority of light. -Alcohol DOES NOT protect from cold at all. Drink some tea, take breaks during long walks instead. And, ofc, have fun and enjoy Winter activities! :)
From the north of Sweden here... I agree with all of these tips. I can also add something I heard a guy from California mentioned, that somebody should have told him to put on your gloves (or mittens) BEFORE going outside and getting cold hands. The point of gloves are to keep the warmth in, they won't add warmth to already cold hands. He was quite annoyed nobody had explained this to him as he spent about three months with cold hands before figuring this trick out.
Hi, Rocky! I live here and this is what I do on daily basis: 1. Dry my shoes with rolled paper (usually old newspapers) or you could buy special electric shoes dryers, those are usually not expensive. 2. Consume a lot of meat and fruits to restore a vitamine balance which you lack during winter time.the meat helps with the immune system during winter btw. 3.I do not wear synthetic clothing. Cotton and wool works better in winters. 4. Go out (winter leisure) skiing, skating, or just - walking in the cold - those all help with the immune too. To be continued
OK, I'm from Northern Kazakhstan. So, I will add that, don't ever buy winter boots with a thin sole. Your feet should be as high from the ground as possible.
As a Scandinavian (the north part) I agree with this. Also, putting extra insoles in the shoes can help a lot. And double up on socks. But don't cram too much in to the shoes since a tight fit will make your toes get less bloodflow and risk them getting very cold. A tip is to get a size larger than you usually wear.
I remember those cold days in the north of Kazakhstan. Especially dry windy cold winters. Now I’m living in the south, in Almaty. And winter here is relatively warm. But my mind can’t get to it and I’m always preparing for cold winter I used to have before. Astana flashbacks
Portable charger, especially for IPhone users. I noticed that my relatives from Astana use portable chargers since IPhone tend to turn off when it is really cold. But when it is connected to charger, IPhone would not turn off. It is extemely helpful
A little tip: if you are going to stay outside for a longer time, take a thermos with a hot beverage (tea+lemon for example, but not coffee - it's not good for your health when it's cold), and a chocolate energy bar. It's not to convenient to eat outside, of course, but it will help a hot Texan girl to stay warm :)

I like a scarf for the idea that if I lose my hat, scarf takes that job. A scarf also blocks the pumping action that expels air while moving. Track pants makes an okay but bulky under trouser if you're only there for awhile. The fur lining on s hood helps create a microclimate around the face in bitter cold. In my experience, in dry cold covering the skin is important. I wear less layers in dry cold than in the temps around freezing because damp cold cuts through.
Greetings from Northern Kazakhstan!:)) A very useful video for people who have never experienced such climate. I'm not sure how it is in Astana aka Nur-Sultan, but Petropavl(ovsk) is pretty warm these days. During the day it was about -10 degrees Celsius. Today I went out for a walk and didn't need a scarf or a sweater. Maybe I would even take off my hat. P.S. There may be mistakes, sorry))

I live in Almaty which is southern Kazakhstan and I must say, that winter here is different and you must prepare for it. It never goes below -20 or even -15, but it feels much more colder because of high humidity. Thick coat won't help you, here because it will make you sweat, instead I would suggest thinner coat, but multiple layers of clothes underneath. Same goes with the shoes, your legs will die out of heat, if you try wearing thick shoes.

And I recommend that should have steel spikes on heels part. For me favorite marks are "Outventure" and "Columbia". There are have good value for many(quality/price). Have a nice New Year holidays!
If you your shoes do not have enough grip i have a tip for you... It might not be aesthetic... Just stick the adhesive tape (rough one) on heel and toes part of the shoe and it will kinda help. At least for some time.
the only problem with ultrasonic humidifiers(the most popular and easy to use type) is that you need to use distilled water. Otherwise you will have all your stuff covered with white residue (which is minerals from water)
No matter how thicker the gloves were my hands always felt cold, so I used to add snow all over my glove which used to work as an insulator trapping all the heat inside it😂👍
I have sth to suggest. Actually I don’t know is it right translation, but it’s called insole or slipsole. It’s a thing that you put inside of your shoes and your feet doesn’t freeze from the bottom. It might be made from fur or other natural materials. Mostly that thing is used when your shoes are kinda cold.
Good job, Rocky! As usual, very informative and interesting. I think this will be definitely helpful for foreigners and for me who never was in Astana in winter😄
My advice about men's winter shoes. For average winter when it's about -20 Celcius you are ok with 200g thinsulate trekking shoes (e.g. Columbia, Merrell, Solomun). But when it's colder than that value you should think about smth warmer like jack wolfskin glacier bay high texapore. This is not ad but real life experience.
I would also recommend you to wear thick tights under the pants or woolen leggings, also you can wear some overalls or warm pants with fleece for example.

And about the shoes, not only u need warm shoes, u need shoes, that don't slip as u said, cause trauma from falling in winter is pretty common in our country. :D
Nice earrings btw, beware of squirrels. ;)
Are there squirrels in Astana?
@@Sketchy-wd1iq surely there are. xP
We wait video about second date!))
Wow
When is your next stream? I missed your stream yesterday, unfortunately.
sounds... cold 🥶
Don't write in Russian pls
@@UserName_TimTim Почему ? 😀
don't worry about the word "dry" , you only used it seven times in the video, not bad for an English teacher))
Bahaha thanks for counting!
♥️
So if you don't have spare winter, you better have spare shoe inserts. If your legs sweat and they will get cold faster. Or don't forget to dry shoe inserts at home if you don't have spare ones.
Homegirl is preparing us for Antarctica lmao
Better I go in spring(көктем) or summer( жаз) to Kazakhstan....
Yes, in summer you'll see much more than if you come in Winter. And it will be warmer.
Summer is not too hot in central/northern Kazakhstan
@@rockyjourneys thank you so much for your help! I guess I will enjoy Kazakhstan very very much!
keep calm and wear gamazh
Admit it, having all the seasons is very cool than only summer all year long 🙃
