We are watching what is called a "technical rehearsal" of the Rio Carnival grand parade, which happen not only in Rio de Janeiro, but also in 30 cities of Brazil, including Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Florianopolis, Joacaba, and even Manaus at the Amazon state.
There is no limit of age for the Brazilian parade dancing revelers. The so-called technical rehearsal take place one month prior to the official gran parade. There are Rio dancers of all ages and genders. The name of this samba school we see is Imperatriz Leopoldinense. There are parade dancing
How the Brazilian Parade Dancing and Rio Carnival Started:
Since 1917, samba in the form of music and dance has been associated with carnival in Brazil. It was born in West Africa and Angola and was brought to Brazil by slaves, who found solace in this type of music in times of suffering.
With the abolition of slavery, many slaves settled in places like Cidade Nova and Praça Onze in Rio de Janeiro, which became great samba centers and as a consequence, the birth of the “samba schools” too.
With the genius of Rio samba, composers, musicians and dancers started to meet regularly to showcase their talents, forming clubs and associations that competed against each other.
This is how the samba schools emerged, with the first official parade in 1932. With the emergence of the Rio Samba Schools Association of the City of Rio de Janeiro, which organizes the Brazilian parade dancing and samba school parades during the Rio Carnival. “Deixa Falar” was the first samba school in 1928.
Since then, as Rio samba schools have evolved, their growth and organization have resembled the most modern companies, with great infrastructure that allows them to prepare for Rio Carnival every year. All schools have a loyal following of supporters, and are well managed by a defined organizational structure.
Until 1984, one of the oldest streets in the river, Avenida Presidente Vargas was the place where samba schools paraded. With the growing popularity of Carnival, it was necessary to build concrete structures on both sides of the runway at Rua Marquês de Sapucaí so the Rio samba dancers and carnival lovers could present themselves in a better organized format.
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the building was named Sambódromo ”and became the stage for the parades. Every year, thousands of Rio samba dancers, singers and musicians from the samba schools make Rio Carnival a spectacle of floats, costumes and drumming at the Sambadrome.
The presentations are stunning, and each school has approximately 85 minutes to show off all the effort and work throughout the year. Carnival Sunday and Monday are considered the two most important days, when the twelve best samba schools compete for the title of champion
