The foreshadowing of their characters is very evident in this. You saw the ruthlessness in Ivar, the passion from Ubbe who saw how knowledgeable Ragnar was, the admiration from Bjorn. Sigurd didn’t live long enough, and I feel like Hvitserk didn’t care.

Ivar because he just really admires Ragnar even though Ragnar left him for dead as a baby. And Ubbe because he’s the smartest of the brothers and tries to see the good and bad in everything
Ubbe showed even back then he was the smartest of them all. His fame does not interest me, what he used his power for that would interest me. Bjorn was the strongest, Ivar had the best battle strategies, Hvitserk was a follower and Sigurd as well. But Ubbe was the smartest. He prevented a fight between the Danes and Alfred. He ruled the short time he did rule with his mind. He did not just want to raid and plunder he wanted to find land like Ragnar. And he wanted to make peace and friendly connections with the people he met. Like the Native Americans. I loved that scene when he finally met the Natives.

@@kingwacky184 I believe that after this season, we can safely affirm that he has truly done significant stuff as a son of Ragnar. 1)He is an exceptional fighter, probably even greater than Ubbe.(He has improved a lot since he went to the Mediterranean) 2)He has become King of East Anglia uniting Saxons and Vikings,something Ragnar truly wanted 3)He converted to Christianity, proving, like his father, that you can look beyond religion to improve your people's lives 4)He wasn't the key factor to this but he did accompany Ivar in all if his travels /helped to overthrow him/etc... He is also very similar to Ragnar for all the doubts he has had along the show about his fate, decisions, etc. Or his interest in other religions. That isn't to say he can't swing a sword in battle, but courage is more than simply fighting. It's moral fortitude. He's overwhelmingly passive. Unlike the broken and traumatized Hvitserk who never truly had a chance to seize a destiny, Ubbe is a follower by choice and nature. He's smart, yes, but he's not a leader. He's a follower. He didn't go to the Mediterranean, he couldn't avenge his mother, he couldn't lead the Great Heathen Army, he didn't lead in Alfred's service, He didn't lead in Iceland. He's often an influential follower, but he certainly prefers to let events run their course. Leadership and intelligence also rely on the ability to be decisive.

I love that we see a glimmer of Ivar's wisdom here. Ragnar has been raised in a culture where babies with such a heavy disability are left to die in the forest. Even Ivar laments living the way he was, and knew his own son would suffer a similar fate and unfortunately made the same choice as his father did, but followed through with it.
It took Hvitserk a while, but he somewhat got there in the end, even if he took the name Athelstan. Sigard unfortunately never got that chance, considering they just chose to kill him off in such a stupid way..

Having completed the series some of his sons are very much analogs for Ragnar. Bjorn is Ragnar as a leader and a warrior, Ivar is his intellect and Ubbe is him as a dreamer. Bjorn is awesome, but at the end Ubbe was the version i liked. At the beginning ragnar wanted to go west so they could stop living hard lives and fighting amongst each other. Remember he was a farmer so that settlement and a peaceful thriving farming community are what he really wanted. Ubbe found peace for his companions and family in a new world
You could say that. When bjørn agrees with ivar, he knew Ivar was talking sense and was perhaps closer to the truth than other brothers (except bjørn himself ofc). The way ivar is sort of triggered , taking it personally shows his character and what he's been through mentally compared to his brothers. But it's such a nice subtle detail.

God I love the quiet, collected side of Bjorn like we see here. I almost always found that less was much more when it came to his character. He conveys such control and authority compared to post Season 5 where he's always yelling, foaming at the mouth or striking anyone and everyone off as 'not fit to be a son of Ragnar'. Like when he stops Ubbe and Ivar killing Lagertha, does he need to scream and pout 'Are we afraid to die?! Not me!!' or 'YOU ARE NOT FIT TO BE CALLED A SON OF RAGNAR' and the usual that Season 5 Bjorn and onwards always has at the ready to roar at someone, relevant or not? Not at all. Just stands tall, places a few firm looks and speaks truth and that's enough. He gives that same energy here. While that makes more sense here given the brothers are yet to come into their own and are discussing something they're clueless about compared to Bjorn, it's still a striking improvement in Bjorn's presence in the show as a whole compared to what began to come after this season where he's always five seconds away from gnashing his teeth and brooding uncomfortably despite apparently still being the Bjorn Ironside we know and love and supposedly carrying forth his legacy both in the show and with the fans watching. And again, while there's a time and a place for deconstruction, e.g. I fully understand why he acts like that in Season 6b when his rule goes all but entirely south, from losing out as King of Norway to losing Lagertha and facing the oncoming Rus, the entirety of Season 5 he's just a moronic tit who never gives off that air of composure and capability than an un-killable hero of his calibre should (and does pre Season 5). And that's not forgetting when even in Season 4 he suddenly goes on a never-ending quest to sleep with every female character that has or will be introduced despite despising his father for doing that to his mother when he was a child.

Hvitserk has been shown to be a berserker type of fighter, while they can be tough warriors themselves Bjorns fight with a berserker proved that if you keep your cool it's that much easier to win one on one, and if I remember correctly that berserker Bjorn fought was much bigger than he himself was. That being said even though Hvitserk is a berserker he and ragnar had a more similar build so it's probably safe to say their strength is comparable so at this point the Victor would be who's able to outsmart their opponent which Ragnar has in spades compared to his son
This scene and the one where they discuss the fate of Ecbert comprehensively portray the differing personalities of the brothers. Björn values Ragnar’s strength and adventurousness, Ubba’s interested in his wisdom, Hvitserk showcases his anxiousness & need for authority in his criticism of Ragnar’s abandonment, Sigurd portrays himself as universally caring by representing the opinions of the wide (normal) population, and Ivar idolises his father for his legendary reputation and warmongering.
Bjorn was the wisest and strongest; Ivar was the cleverest and most ruthless; Ubbe was the most contemplative and farsighted; Hvitserk was the most aggressive and talented at fighting; and Sigurd was the most sensitive and soulful.

Nah Ivar betrayed his people, Ragnar had faith in him because he believed Ivar would be abe to conquer land and be a righteous king.
But Ivar was the trickster Loki in spirit and instead thought he was better then everyone else as well as betraying his father by trying to become more famous.

@@gustaf3811 Bjorn failed miserably couldn't rule with conviction. Ubbe betrayed the Vikings and fought against Vikings. Ivar is mad but he wants the Vikings to be strong in every aspect. Ivar had a stronghold for the Vikings in England and Bjorn took all the warriors out of England and lost a Viking base. Didn't attempt to go back to reclaim it or nothing.

He refused to be with him and Aslaug always had to ask if Ragnar loved Ivar, but she never asked with the others because he already knew that Ragnar loved them but not Ivar. Ragnar refused to give Ivar the opportunity to be king during the whole "Who wants to be king" thing and he went to Ivar last when he wanted to sail back to England because all his other sons refused. Ragnar only started to see Ivar as more than just his legs when he actually started to spend time with him on that voyage but before that? No, he didn't love Ivar in the same way he loved his other children.
@@hoangquang4414 It... was a bit more complicated than simply saying Ragnar didn't love Ivar. Ragnar has been raised in a culture where babies with such a heavy disability are left to die in the forest. It was usually seen as a mercy, considering the Viking culture is heavily dependent on physical strength and prowess. Even Ivar laments living the way he was, and knew his own son would suffer a similar fate and unfortunately made the same choice as his father did, but followed through with it.
People says after ragnar the series died but ivar was on another level and he took it forword like a badass😎

It took Hvitserk a while, but he somewhat got there in the end, even if he took the name Athelstan. Sigard unfortunately never got that chance, considering they just chose to kill him off in such a stupid way..
Ivar was the only person there with a reason to hate his father, hes the only one there who was disregarded by his father his whole life. Yet hes the only one here who openly respects his father for the man he was not the father they wanted

Having completed the series some of his sons are very much analogs for Ragnar. Bjorn is Ragnar as a leader and a warrior, Ivar is his intellect and Ubbe is him as a dreamer. Bjorn is awesome, but at the end Ubbe was the version i liked. At the beginning ragnar wanted to go west so they could stop living hard lives and fighting amongst each other. Remember he was a farmer so that settlement and a peaceful thriving farming community are what he really wanted. Ubbe found peace for his companions and family in a new world
All have a part of Ragnar in them. Ivar especially. But Bjorn tho is never one to be underestimated. That is why Ivar is dangerous.
You could say that. When bjørn agrees with ivar, he knew Ivar was talking sense and was perhaps closer to the truth than other brothers (except bjørn himself ofc). The way ivar is sort of triggered , taking it personally shows his character and what he's been through mentally compared to his brothers. But it's such a nice subtle detail.
They all ragnar and bjorn is the warrior within, ivar was the cunning ness, ubba is the adventurer, hvitserk is the tortured soul in ragnar and sigurd is the weakness and lust and hastiness

@@gustaf3811 Except lagertha didn't had any claim to kattegat, she lost the claim the minute she leaved Ragnar (I don't blame her for that, she was a good and loving queen, wife and mother. Aslaug taking her place hurt her a lot, I get it) but it's all on the past, she was in a great position than that. she took kattegat by force and unnecessarily murdered aslaug (I don't like that woman either, but she's the rightful queen of kattegat) and this it contributed to the Civil War..
God I love the quiet, collected side of Bjorn like we see here. I almost always found that less was much more when it came to his character. He conveys such control and authority compared to post Season 5 where he's always yelling, foaming at the mouth or striking anyone and everyone off as 'not fit to be a son of Ragnar'. Like when he stops Ubbe and Ivar killing Lagertha, does he need to scream and pout 'Are we afraid to die?! Not me!!' or 'YOU ARE NOT FIT TO BE CALLED A SON OF RAGNAR' and the usual that Season 5 Bjorn and onwards always has at the ready to roar at someone, relevant or not? Not at all. Just stands tall, places a few firm looks and speaks truth and that's enough. He gives that same energy here. While that makes more sense here given the brothers are yet to come into their own and are discussing something they're clueless about compared to Bjorn, it's still a striking improvement in Bjorn's presence in the show as a whole compared to what began to come after this season where he's always five seconds away from gnashing his teeth and brooding uncomfortably despite apparently still being the Bjorn Ironside we know and love and supposedly carrying forth his legacy both in the show and with the fans watching. And again, while there's a time and a place for deconstruction, e.g. I fully understand why he acts like that in Season 6b when his rule goes all but entirely south, from losing out as King of Norway to losing Lagertha and facing the oncoming Rus, the entirety of Season 5 he's just a moronic tit who never gives off that air of composure and capability than an un-killable hero of his calibre should (and does pre Season 5).
And that's not forgetting when even in Season 4 he suddenly goes on a never-ending quest to sleep with every female character that has or will be introduced despite despising his father for doing that to his mother when he was a child.

@@sahirdamani1264 i think it'd be closely matched in that scenario. Though I think Ragnar would have the edge considering he's easily more cunning not only as a warrior but also a strategist. Hvitserk has been shown to be a berserker type of fighter, while they can be tough warriors themselves Bjorns fight with a berserker proved that if you keep your cool it's that much easier to win one on one, and if I remember correctly that berserker Bjorn fought was much bigger than he himself was. That being said even though Hvitserk is a berserker he and ragnar had a more similar build so it's probably safe to say their strength is comparable so at this point the Victor would be who's able to outsmart their opponent which Ragnar has in spades compared to his son

Björn values Ragnar’s strength and adventurousness, Ubba’s interested in his wisdom, Hvitserk showcases his anxiousness & need for authority in his criticism of Ragnar’s abandonment, Sigurd portrays himself as universally caring by representing the opinions of the wide (normal) population, and Ivar idolises his father for his legendary reputation and warmongering.
