My Last Large Format Photographs of the Year - 2022 Fall Photo Series Ep 3

- Learning how to shoot large format photography has had its ups and downs, which is to be expected when starting out with a new film format. I have been enjoying the experience of photographing with my Intrepid 4x5 Mk5, and pairing it with sheets of Kodak Ektar 100 for the fall woodland scenes was a perfect match.
While I do already see the areas in which I'd like to work harder to improve my skills, I am aware of how this new format is changing me a bit. It sounds cliché to say that film is slowing me down, but in the case of 4x5 photography, that is absolutely true. I find myself studying my subjects much closer, working harder to find the best angle, and putting more thought behind the shot before I take it.
And that is by no means a bad thing... in fact, it's quite wonderful. I might not be producing my best work at the moment because I am still learning, but every image brings me one step closer.
As always, feel free to check out my Instagram page @jesshobbsphoto for a closer look at today's images! Thanks for watching!
This is a wonderful way to show your love of this slow process. Keep shooting in Mount St-Hilaire? or anywhere else The more we get into large format, the more addictive it becomes...
Thanks for sharing
thanks Jess. What an endevour.LF photography is like meditation and thoughtful reflection.
it looks like we need to do lots of home work to get the shot we want because of the constraints imposed by the camera and film.Nevetheless one day every thing will fall in place.I thought I would like to add something more.Use of Polarizing filter will take away the reflextion.ND filter will deal with light from above.unnoticed subjects could have saved your day like the mushroom on the bark of the tree which would not shake with breeze/ wind.
Something to bear in mind when the film is only two or max four.
Lovely!
There is something nice about all of the fall colours on the ground!
The good news is that when I get past the month of February I have decided that the month of march is the start of spring in Stockholm!
Soon the colours are back again!
Thanks so much! There is something really special about the fallen leaves, I love the season so much!
That's amazing about spring in March! I really wish I could say the same here, but we often still have snow until April! Doesn't matter though, spring will be here in no time!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Another treat and so early in the day. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
You know I really love that camera and I get why they used layered plywood for the build so there would be no warping to create light leaks and such but not all the parts of that camera need to be made of that and I imagine some kinda rubber light seals would solve any slight warping if they would have just used a very nice looking wood. Imagine that camera made with stained oak or something . Also I loved the stump photo . I took something very close to that of a stump in the middle of a lake this fall and I loved the result :). Thanks for the great videos
You should look up Chanonix cameras. They make exactly what you’re describing! (For five times the price as Intrepid)
I really love the Intrepid 4x5, I've been following the company since they started out. They wanted to make the camera out of plywood because it is much lighter than other woods, making it a perfect 4x5 hiking companion. The design has evolved over the years a bit, including different coloured bellows, and I think they nailed it with the newest edition.
There are many beautiful 4x5 cameras out there, Chamonix, Shen Hao, Tachihara, and Wista are among some of the prettiest. And they also come with higher price tags, lol!
I love finding stumps in the woods, they are so photogenic!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
I love your images. But I also appreciate your commentary. Your last comments about taking things for granted and then finding them gone hit home with me. A simple statement that is also profound.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I too often take things for granted, so that is a statement born of experience, unfortunately. I am trying to adopt a more proactive approach though, and try to get out as much as I can. I can only regret the shots that I don't take!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Beautiful video - many thanks.
Hi Jess, glad you've been able to get out with the Intrepid to do some shots. My new year didn't start well and has been much the same since, so pics have been rather few. Though what I have taken hasn't been too bad. Just have to hope for better days, hey!!
Hey Carl, I'm so sorry to hear that 2023 hasn't been off to a good start, but I will keep my fingers crossed that your luck will change! And the fact that you are still able to photograph a bit is a good distraction! Take care, and thanks for watching! ❤️
One thing that one learns with large format is patience. I believe that you did that well. Wind and large format is always a problem as we generally shoot with low shuttle speeds and small apertures. Just part of the fun!
Ha ha, yeah, patience isn't always my strong suit, but is sometimes very necessary when out photographing! The conditions that day didn't help, the light wasn't quite right so I was already using slow shutter speeds and shallow DoF, so I really needed to wait out the breeze.
It really is all part of the fun though, and I'm looking forward to more experimentation in the future!
Another nice video and great images! Now is the season for black and white film!
Thank you so much! I do agree with you, I need to bring out more b&w film! I do struggle with colour in the winter, so it will be a refreshing change to go back to b&w for a bit!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
wonderful video, thank you!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!

Thank you for sharing this information. I just shot two images yesterday. I screwed up the developing, so I just may toss them. One turned out, and one was too dark. I got my spot meter today, I might use the one I was using yesterday. they were just tests, I may use the meter I borrowed, but I have to make a guess change, so I will try it again, and then the spot meter with different images. I didn't use my intrepid for months, but I'm starting to use it now. I think I will take It on vacation with me, it will be a crap shoot if they turn out like they should. I mostly shot pinhole 4x5s. But my go to cameras a zero images pinhole cameras. Love what they can do. I think I bought it in November 2022, a night when I could not sleep, my PayPal button is a temptation, so I bought it knowing nothing, and that meant that I had no lens boards. I live in AZ, from cactus to pine trees, but I'm in the low desert. You make good instructive videos.
Just found your channel and Love it, i just got into MEDIUM FORMAT photography and bought a HASSY 501CM. You are sooooo right, we take the fall colors for granted and before you know it time has slipped us by. I will NEVER take the fall colors for granted AGAIN. I have subbed. Looking forward to more of your videos, my other cam is my M6 which has been on the shelf for about a month since i got my HASSY. LOLOLO.
Welcome, glad to hear you're enjoying my videos! I LOVE shooting medium format, my RB67 is still my main workhorse camera!
It's hard not to take the fall colours for granted, but it's something I try to not do every year. Working outdoors on a farm does at least let me appreciate the colours, but I do try to photograph them as much as I can.
Thanks for watching! ❤️
@@JessHobbs Would love to see you do a HOW TO video on these Intrepid Cams including lens choice and lens cost, the cameras themselves are VERY affordable compared to other large format cams, BUT many forget TOTAL cost, lololol. I may order one of these in the near future. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@MARKLINMAN1 I am planning out a video on how I got started, where I got my info, lenses, etc. because there is a lot to think about when getting into 4x5! We do often forget about the extra stuff we need to get, not just the camera!
@@JessHobbs OMG, AWESOME. Thank you soooo much, looking forward to it BIG TIME. Again thank you.
Another great video Jess. Your comments at the end about how fall ends resonated with me. Fall in Minnesota is breathtaking, and then all of a sudden, poof, it’s over.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Fall really does pass so quickly, and I need to remind myself year after year to take the time to enjoy before winter sets in!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Beautiful results! And we were blessed with an amazing bright fall this year. I often find myself walking around a subject finding the *perfect* angle. Also, love your use of shallow DoF with the 4x5; I'm very guilty of cranking my lens all the way to f/45 or f/64 to get all the things in focus.
Fall was really beautiful, I already miss it, ha ha!
It's funny, because I do walk around my subjects to find the best angle, but when I have any other camera with me I'll just shoot from all the angles and pick my favourite. With 4x5 I definitely don't want to be burning through sheets like I do roll film, so I take way more time to try and get it right. I love it though, and it's going to be a fun format to keep experimenting with!
I kind of had no choice with the shallow DoF, the conditions made it so that I didn't want super slow shutter speeds, so I had to compromise on my apertures. But I do like the results, so it was worth taking the risk!
Thanks for watching! ❤
I always enjoy your Fall series. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
And thanks for watching! ❤️
I had bought a box of 4x5 Ektachrome for fall photos and didn't get around to shooting them. There's always next year. I'm using old 4x5 equipment, the Anniversary Speed Graphic, the Graphic View, and a Calumet, along with a bunch of old shutters and lenses. One thing nice about being in New England is that we always get beautiful autumn colors. Next year...
That Ektachrome will absolutely still be perfect for the fall colours next year! New England is really beautiful in the fall, very similar to here, and I'm sure you will capture wonderful images with those great cameras.
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Awesome
Beautiful!! Thanks for this video.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
And thanks for watching! ❤️
Beautiful compositions. Really looking forward to some winter shots. Winter is a whole other challenge when it comes to composition and lighting.👍
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Winter is definitely a challenge, but it can be a lot of fun to shoot in the snow! I had to bring my video camera to the shop for a cleaning, but I'm working on some video ideas involving winter scenes, so fingers crossed it all works out! I'd love to show the woods off in the winter!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Wow. Appreciate the effort you guys put into this series.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! It's always a fun series to film, and it makes me happy knowing that others enjoy it too!
Thanks for watching! ❤
You are such a delightful person to watch & listen to. I am binge watching all your videos, and loving them! I was impressed with you and your RB67, and now here you are with a 4x5 rig. Now I'm even more impressed!! May I ask - are you utilizing any of the movements offered by the view camera yet?
so true to always enjoy just getting out and photographing fall since it's such a brief period. great images, and great choice with backpacks!
Cleansing for the soul video.
i love this chanel
As long as I have told a few other UA-cam photographers, nature moves. Do not be concerned with a little bit of movement in the leaves
Sometimes nature can also be very very still. It is in that stillness, and the quiet, that I find my peace in the woods, and that is what I try to convey when I photograph in the woods.
Of course, movement can also be quite beautiful, and there will be plenty of opportunities to capture that as well.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video, and a couple of really good shots. I feel the same about fall. It's hands-down my favorite season. Here in Utah we rarely get peak red and yellow at the same time. Peak yellow is usually less than a week long, and peak red is about a day, so you really have to be ready to jump at an opportunity to go shoot the autumn colors.
It's nice watching your 4x5 videos because I'm using virtually the same gear as you (Intrepid Mk IV and Reveni Labs spot), so when you get incredible results, it's a reminder to me that I have no excuses haha.
Thanks so much for this fabulous series. I'm really looking forward to your experiences with the Intrepid in the winter. I'm still on the fence about 4x5, but I'm really enjoying watching your experiences and your comments about the learning and how it's different from the photographic perspective (way more interesting than the technical side which I've found lots of content on). I shoot a Bronica Square, and I try to be intentional. But as you say there's still that voice that says you've got more shots dummy, so just pull the shutter! Thanks again Jess, you have no idea how helpful this is to me!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate that! I am enjoying the Intrepid very much, and I'm also excited to see where LF will take me. I mean, I'll always shoot roll film too, I have too many favourite cameras to leave them to the side completely, but I have a feeling that the LF experience will overall help make me into a better photographer.
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Beautiful images of woodland scenery during the Fall. And I can really appreciate the clarity of the 4 x 5 images. How are you finding the Intrepid?
💞💞💞
🖤
I see what you're saying about LF vs other formats. LF forces you to slow down so, we can it is zen.
Exactly! I am already so much more intentional with my shots on LF thatn I am on other formats, and I am really enjoying the process so far!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Jess, one observation/tip, for movement of leaves, a trick that some LF photographers use is LONG exposure, 1, 2 seconds or longer (you CAN get away with this on this format, as the iris goes down to f 64 or lower on some lenses!), this works as a fact of "photo physics" is that movement is 'averaged out' over the long time, aka motion blur when closing a shutter in T setting, etc. so this can obviate some of the leaf movement, you don't always have to use a fast shutter speed (on dslr's you CAN as they have 1/8000th of a sec. due to their Curtain shutter designs),but on MF/LF leaf shutters only 1/500 is available; this is an alternative to this methodology, either have the shutter 'beat' the motion, or 'freeze' it with flash, or do long exposure, and average it out.
Hey Andy! You are absolutely right, I could definitely use long exposure in the woods, and it is something I'm starting to experiment more with.
When I'm out in the woods, I always have a feeling of peace, and so that is what I am trying to recreate through my images. That's why I will wait out the wind and make sure everything is completely still, to capture the vision I have in my mind.
But I do agree that I could try out some new techniques and play around with my photography a little more! That's what I'm hoping the Intrepid will bring out in my work, and I'm really excited to see the images I will make in the future.
Thanks for watching! ❤️
@@JessHobbs no worries, your content is always appreciated, and being in Australia, we don't have snow, so a great landscape; one observation, the way you 'fold' the camera, is what the manual and others do, but I found a youtube video, where someone suggested reversing the u-frame on the front 180 degrees and laying the wood base on the bed, this braces the top of the rear standard when folded, thus stopping wear on the hinge (if you squeeze the camera at the front, while transporting it to the tripod, etc.), esp if it is a camera, like the shen-hao, chamonix F2, etc that have a strap, belt, or catch on this area, clamping them together.
Nowdays I have a third of a year of late autumn where I live :/
Well done!!
Another great presentation!! I'm curious, do you think you'll be shooting much B&W on the Intrepid 4x5 in the future?
Thanks again and have a GREAT day!!
CC
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I will definitely be shooting b&w with the Intrepid soon, I've been busy buying some film, ha ha!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Beautiful photos! One question, is your pack heavier outfitted for a day of shooting with the Intrepid or the RB67?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Oooh, good question! I would have to weigh each one out, but just going by feel I would say that the Intrepid is much lighter overall. I have since added a few more film holders though, and I do want to pick up a 210mm lens at some point, so it will be interesting to see if they will make a difference!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Which lens is that at 2:29?
which lens it is ? (edit: looks like a Nikon 180mm)
Large format colour must be expensive?
